The COVID-19 pandemic continues to take its toll on college athletics. On Thursday evening, the NCAA announced the recruiting dead period has been extended until August 31.

“The Division I Council extended the recruiting dead period in all sports through Aug. 31,” the organization released in a statement. “The Council met virtually Thursday afternoon.

Truly 'get' that this is one strange year, given Covid and all, but.....certainly do not like that Alabama waltzs into our house and takes two commits from tOSU. Losing the IMG tackle (was he a silent commit?) hurt a heckuva lot, as most of us fanatics already had his 5* points added into our totals....but having them steal a verbaled recruit hurts just as badly. Does anyone know whether tOSU staff had an inkling of either of these desertions? Have to think they did, but with no visits either way, not much can do. Is there a 'skinny' here? Would love to know. Thanks.

Smith was the lowest-rated DB in what was an absolutely loaded DB class — which OSU was still trying expand with the pursuit of Hancock. If he’s more comfortable with Alabama and feels like he has a better chance to play and the staff likes their chances with the top-rated DB prospect on its board in Hancock, then a mutual exit makes sense for both sides.

I don’t know what to say about Latham; that one just sucks all around because Burton and Leigh seem pretty far away from being locks in the class.

You could accuse the former of being overly optimistic; there are others here that can offer much more.

They didn’t “steal” Smith. This was a mutual parting thats been in the works for months.

Latham was definitely a loss, but you’re not going to beat out momma 9 times out of 10. There’s really nothing Ohio State could have done.

We still have the top rated class by a wide margin, I think recency bias has people losing track of the big picture.

Ohio State’s 2021 DB crew may be reorganizing itself

After taking a hit, can the Buckeyes bounce back with an even higher ranked player?

What comes next for Ohio State? Two names jump to the forefront when considering this subject and who the Buckeyes may turn too. They are still very heavily in the mix for Pennsylvania safety prospect Derrick Davis Jr., and what a feat that would be to once again go into a rival’s state and poach a top player away from Penn State. Davis is the No. 4 player in the state and the No. 2 safety in the country according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. As it stands now, the Crystal Ball is trending toward the in-state Nittany Lions, but as stated already, the Buckeyes have more than a puncher’s chance with this one.

The other name to really pay close attention to is Jordan Hancock. For some time it seemed as if Hancock was a Buckeye lean, but his March commitment to Clemson certainly ruined that idea. However, he has remained in the minds of the Ohio State staff, and with essentially a “spot” open for an additional DB, Hancock is becoming more and more of a potential “flip” candidate much like Smith is for Alabama.

In fact, Ohio State’s 2021 commits certainly like the idea of flipping the nation’s No. 6 cornerback from Clemson, and didn’t hide their enthusiasm when Hancock himself tweeted the ever-so-popular “eye” emoji, which in most minds clearly was about Smith’s de-commitment.

2021 class is going to be a fight to the finish with how crazy that Covid19 has radically changed recruiting. We may even see a few more decommits when visits are allowed, but we also could see new names emerge that are better fits. It happens. This will be more of a roller coaster than we've seen in the past. And the fact that we lost our lowest rated commit means that we can make up ground with another kid.

Now it's getting stupid. In-home visits should be permitted provided the visited family gives written permission and of course the visiting coaches take proper precautions.

We lost our lowest rated recruit and IMO we have a very good shot to add Jordan Hancock if we can get a visit.

As for Latham yeah it sucks but getting 3 start OTs in 2 years is tough to do and regardless we still have two 5 star OTs.

If we can get Latham on campus it's not over anyways.

Let's see how he feels when Bama is a 2-3 loss team this year and misses the playoffs again.

I suspect the thing most likely to sway him is a Buckeye OT getting talked about as a potential first round pick
