2021 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

  • Camar Wheaton • Garland, Texas • ★★★★★
    • The top-ranked running back in the country is a big fan of the Buckeyes according to sources in Texas. But Ohio State will be tasked with upsetting all the heavyweights if it wants to sway Wheaton away from his home in the Lone Star State. Tony Alford and Ryan Day both visited during the January contact period and Wheaton has been to Columbus already. LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and everyone else is on his tail.
  • Will Shipley • Weddington, North Carolina • ★★★★★
    • The first of two North Carolina tailbacks on the list is Will Shipley, a player who has been favorably compared to Carolina Panthers star Christian McCaffrey because of the similarities in their game. Shipley came to Ohio State in November, said the visit with the Buckeyes was “incredible” and guaranteed he’d return to Columbus for another trip at some point. That has not been planned yet, but in the months since his visit Clemson and Notre Dame have seemed to separate themselves among the traditional football powers for Shipley’s eventual commitment.
  • Donovan Edwards • West Bloomfield, Michigan • ★★★★
    • A top-50 national prospect, Edwards has been to Ohio State a number of times in the last three years. That’s helped form a relationship with running backs coach Tony Alford that has the Buckeyes in excellent shape in his recruitment. Edwards may be a bit more of the power running back that has become the norm in Columbus over the last few seasons, but he doesn’t lack explosiveness or shiftiness. He’s a complete back that has offers from almost 40 schools from around the country. Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Georgia, Alabama and Arizona State are some of the early favorites, but there’s a long way to go here. The return of Kerry Coombs could help the Buckeyes thanks to the great relationships he has with Michigan’s high school community. But ultimately this comes down to Jay Harbaugh and the decision to stay at home or the relationship with Tony Alford and the tough decision to leave Michigan for its biggest rival.
  • Evan Pryor • Charlotte, North Carolina • ★★★★
    • Like Edwards, Pryor has been to Ohio State multiple times and has developed a solid relationship with Tony Alford since getting offered last spring. A top-six school list is expected from Pryor this week, and Ohio State will be on it. He could be closer than anyone else on this list to a college decision. No doubt his choice, if it happens anytime soon, will set off some dominoes.
  • Lovasea Carroll • Warrenton, Georgia • ★★★★
    • A junior at the IMG Academy in Florida, Carroll is a Georgia native who has been high on the Buckeyes for a while now. So far, he is yet to make a trip to Columbus. Still, he included Ohio State in his most recently-narrowed top schools. A former commitment to South Carolina, Carroll has insisted that he’ll eventually visit the Buckeyes. But until that happens it seems he’ll be a tough pull from SEC country — which might still be the case even if he visits.
  • Brandon Campbell • Rosenberg, Texas • ★★★★
    • A relatively new name for the Buckeyes but one that should definitely be paid attention to is Lamar Consolidated High School’s Brandon Campbell. Offered by Ohio State in January, Campbell is closing in on a March visit date, and the conversations between he and Alford have been consistent over the last few months. There’s a lot of J.K. Dobbins in the game of this 5-foot-10, 190-pound running back. Can the Buckeyes pull off another tailback coup in Texas?
  • Cody Brown • Lilburn, Georgia • ★★★★
    • Brown visited Ohio State in November and has been in near-daily contact for the last few months with Alford and linebackers coach Al Washington, who recruits his area. A 210-pound bruiser, Brown is a borderline top-100 prospect and has 15 offers to his credit, including one from the Buckeyes. Expect that number to increase rapidly over the next few months. He’s a highly-talented young player with high character and a prospect Ohio State is very interested in pursuing.
  • Corey Kiner • Cincinnati, Ohio • ★★★★
    • The country’s No. 8-ranked running back lives just about 90 minutes from Ohio State and plays his high school football at Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati. Kiner has 19 offers and four crystal ball predictions, but two of them are in the favor of the Michigan Wolverines, who have recruited him longer and harder than the Buckeyes have to this point. Could we see the state’s top running back for the state’s top running back trade between Ohio and Michigan in 2021? Maybe.

Way-too-early predictions for the top uncommitted 2021 recruits

Not even a week after National Signing Day, we’re already ripping and roaring in the 2021 recruiting cycle. The top two prospects in the 247Sports Composite, defensive linemen Korey Foreman (Clemson) and Jack Sawyer (Ohio State) have already committed, while seven of the eight top-ranked quarterbacks have pledged to a program.

But there’s obviously still tons left on the board in 2021. Let’s take a look at my way-too-early predictions for the 10 best uncommitted prospects.

5-STAR DT J.T. TUIMOLOAU

Prediction: Ohio State

247Sports Composite Rank: 4

High School: Sammamish (Wash.) Eastside Catholic

According to my colleague Brandon Huffman, the Buckeyes are in terrific shape at this point of the process with defensive line coach Larry Johnson’s track record a big factor. Ohio State hit big at Eastside Catholic this past cycle in Gee Scott Jr and would sure like to do it again. Washington is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite, including Huffman’s current forecast. Alabama, Clemson and USC are also in the picture.

5-STAR ATH EMEKA EGBUKA

Prediction: Ohio State

247Sports Composite Rank: 9

High School: Steilacoom (Wash.)

If the five-star athlete with elite speed opts to leave the West Coast, I like Ohio State. Obviously Jimmy Lake and the Washington staff are doing all they can to keep Egbuka in-state with Clemson and LSU a couple of the other contenders, per Huffman. Don't sleep on Stanford, either.

So, is there a correlation between the staff terminating its pursuit of Landon Jackson and the newly developed surfacing of Marcus Bradley?

I can’t remember if this was particularly discussed so forgive me if this is a redundant question but was a third/fourth/ DE in the cards for the class
or is that excessive given other needs and the current roster?

Guess I’m getting greedy for wanting someone elite opposite Sawyer after we were robbed of a full season of Young/Bosa. I’ll never be whole.

Bradley is a DT while Jackson is a really lanky 6’6” DE so I doubt they are directly related in terms of one replacing the other at the top of the board.

It also seems too early for the staff to cut off communication based on overall numbers for the class, although they only have 10-12 spots left at the moment, so it’s possible.

New 2021 offer. He’s a UF verbal, so I’m not going to start a thread. Might be one to keep an eye on down the road. Four star DB out of IMG.

The Dean with a CB flip to tOSU. Supposed to be in Columbus for an unofficial sometime this spring as well as an official visit the weekend of June 12th.

  • Emeka Egbuka • Steilacoom, Washington • ★★★★★
    • If he wanted to be a defensive back, Emeka Egbuka would be one of the country’s top-ranked cornerbacks. Egbuka wants to be wide receiver, though and that’s exactly what Ohio State is interested in him being. The question here is not about relationships, because Egbuka and Hartline have built a very sincere bond. The issue will be distance. Will the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Egbuka leave the West Coast for college? The Buckeyes feel confident in their odds of landing him if that happens, but Clemson, Alabama, LSU and others are also fighting off Washington and Stanford in this recruitment.
  • Troy Stellato • Fort Lauderdale, Florida • ★★★★
    • Ignore the rankings and ignore the stars, Stellato is the top target for Ohio State and Clemson at the receiver position — and that says a whole lot more than a subjective opinion by recruiting analysts around the country. The Cardinal Gibbons standout has been to Columbus three times and Clemson once. The relationship between the Buckeyes and Stellato has been the driving force in his recruitment since he first became a hot commodity on the trail last fall. Numbers aside, there’s no way Ohio State would say no to Stellato or the aforementioned Egbuka.
  • Kaden Prather • Hyattsville, Maryland • ★★★★
    • Raw but talented, Prather has all the physical tools Ohio State is looking for in a wideout, but he isn’t as polished as Stellato or as naturally athletic as Egbuka. There’s a wide gap between those two guys and anyone else on this list, but Prather’s combination of size and speed and upside make him and intriguing prospect for the Buckeyes if the need arises to really make a push for a receiver beyond Egbuka and Stellato.
  • Dont’e Thornton • Baltimore, Maryland • ★★★★
    • Another Maryland star that the Buckeyes have remained interested in is Dont’e Thornton, a former Penn State commit who was offered by Ohio State in January last year. Thornton is a big, easy-gliding receiver who caught 16 touchdown passes as a junior at Mount St. Joseph’s High School. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound receiver hasn’t been to Ohio State, and that’s affected the relationship between he and Hartline. But the Buckeyes receivers coach did stop in to see him during the last contact period the interest is clearly still there.

HotMic’s Hunch February Edition

DB: Jaylen Reed

JAYLEN REED IS A NAME TO KNOW GOING FORWARD
Early on, it looks as though Ohio State's 2021 class will be loaded with defensive backs as new secondaries coach Kerry Coombs looks to bolster what will be a depleted room.

With the current roster situation and Coombs' familiarity with the Detroit area one, player to keep an eye on is 2021 four-star safety Jaylen Reed out of Martin Luther King High School.

Reed was the best defensive back at the camp by a wide margin and even though he is ranked as a safety he locked up opposing wide receivers in one-on-one drills.

After the camp, Reed told Eleven Warriors that he has been in communication with Coombs.

While this relationship looks to be in its infancy, Reed is a player that could receive an Ohio State offer down the line. Right now Georgia and Penn State seem to be the players that leading Reed's recruitment but if Ohio State were to offer he would no doubt listen to what the Buckeyes are telling him.
