2020 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Well, since it was your contention in response to Jax's worry about a thin RB room that having just 3 would meet with Woody's approval, I'd say it's incumbent on you to find any instance where he had just 3 people in that room (beyond walk ons). I'll spare you the trouble, there isn't one. Since 1992, when allotted scholarships became 85, it would appear (from a quick glance through the years from them to now), that a RB room of about 5 to 7 guys is the preference.

Logan, by the way, did not become a DB. He was Ohio State's leading rusher his Junior season (1976, 218 carries for 1248) before being passed on the depth chart by Ron Springs in 1977. EDIT: Also, I looked and was surprised to see that Ray Griffin was a DB for one season. I, like you, thought he was a DB longer than that (I would have even guessed he was a DB upon becoming a Buckeye)

Of course, the whole idea of "Pair and a spare" had nothing to do with the size of the RB room in the first instance. Instead, it's the idea that you want at least 3 guys who are game ready. Maybe Teague, Crowley, and Chambers will be all OSU needs in 2020 - but that doesn't alleviate Jax's concerns; if any one of those guys goes down, OSU won't have a game ready pair and a spare without adding more scholarship players to the room.
Doesnt McCall count as a spare? He seems to be a forgotten man

I didn't bother checking his eligibility as the post I was responding to assumed he was leaving along with Dobbins. You are correct, though, he would be a rSr in 2020. Likewise, and I think he'll make the jump, there's not guarantee Dobbins is gone. So, if Dobbins comes back (and recognizing that McCall has another year of eligibility) we've been spinning our wheels about a RB room that will have 5 scholarship backs at the ready. In any case, we will have no less than 4... likewise, there are others who are on the roster, or will be, who were RBs in HS, including Jaelen Gill and incoming frosh Mookie Cooper.

My contention was that Woody's approach of having three main starting-ready RBs at the ready would suffice as far as RBs that we would have to rely on, and that if we had only three main RBs next year we'd still be OK. And per the stats you provided, the three main RBs for the seasons noted accounted for the vast majority of carries, but yes, even Woody provided some carries late in blowouts to the 4th-9th stringers. Not sure where anyone got that I implied that the staff itself would be happy with three main RBs. It's obvious that if we can still salvage a commitment for a solid RB this class we take it, and it sucks that we struck out on so many RB targets. My point is that it's not the end of the world should be bank a scholly and not take a RB this class.

I am not as concerned about the RB situation as some. I think the staff can still find viable options at the position if they like. (Tho I do agree with the assertion that, to date, OSU has wiffed on all identified targets, and that's a problem). I just didnt think your comment about a pair and a spare addressed Jax's concern about the potential RB depth in 2020

Just sayin': Whiffing on a running back in 2019 makes Ohio State all that more attractive to land a top one in 2020 due to the lack of good running backs on the depth chart. I think that is why Texas landed Bijan Robinson, Texas' lack of depth at running back is an obvious problem this year.

Found this in Chase’s thread. Posting as a reminder that things may not always work out exactly as planned or hoped... but things work out pretty OK anyhow.

Also a reminder that Cam Akers and Donovan Peoples-Jones made terrible decisions that cost them tens of millions of dollars.

Cam Akers is having a really good season this year and nobody even knows it. Shame. He’s #10 in the country in rushing yards and #5 in touchdowns.

And he’s doing all this behind an FSU OL.
Imagine he & JK in the backfield together.

He and Cam together would probably look like last year. I'm fine with JK running the show by himself
