2020 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

We're talking about OSU coaches ranking these players here. Not a web site.

They absolutely identified and ranked a pool of players that they felt would make a difference for the offense. One can only assume that they ranked them from most likely to be an impact player to least likely.

The OSU coaches just took an 0-fer on the players that they scouted, ranked and recruited.

The "stars don't matter" argument is valid when the coaches big board is different from the recruiting services rankings. When a coaching staff whiffs on it's own big board, "stars don't matter" is completely missing the point.

I guess my point is, we offered Zeke pretty late in the process, and it worked out "OK".

We identified Maurice Wells very early in process, and that didn't work out so well.

They missed on their top 2 targets. Fair.

There's so much talent available behind their #1 and #2 targets, it's on them to identify the talent and get it done. I'm not gonna knock Bijan, but he almost assuredly, based on his playing style, isn't a 1st or 2nd rd pick. And not that OSU should be recruiting for NFL evaluations, but there will be 3* and 4* beasts who people look at in 4 years and wonder how TF they were passed on.

They've missed out on a lot more than their top 2 guys. At some point when you get far enough down the list, you are talking about a different kind of athlete.

Nobody knows for sure how any of these kids are going to turn out but they make a list instead of picking names from a hat for a reason.

Going 0 for your list is a problem and while yes, you can always make a new list, the odds of success are diminished. Either that or you are not very good at making lists. Either way, not good enough at a place like OSU.

Going 0-7 isn't great. I love Alfords coaching but recruiting wise he hasn't been that good for some reason.

He needs to get going regardless. We are a run first offense and with our throw game we could really hurt people if we land someone special at RB.

Lost in this 0-7 talk is that if we hit on the 2 we wanted, we would have been 2-5.....those 5 being "losses" bc we essentially told them thanks but no thanks. Seeing 0-7 seems misleading. It's not like there was an opportunity to go 7-0.
Most likely just put too much into the wrong 2 prospects really.

As I said before in the recruits threads. Let's see how their commitment stands when Texas and FSU find tough sledding in the season.

I think there are two distinct topics at play here; 1) the recruiting angle in a vacuum and 2) the overall value/impact of the RB position on the offense.

First, from the pure recruiting angle this is a bad look. Zero way to spin it.

True. Look at it as 0-1 then. The 1 being their entire list of primary and fall back guys. The coaches are now onto their 2nd list so in terms of recruiting, that's a huge miss. I also don't think I am as optimistic as some that the odds are still good for a difference maker at this late stage in the game for 2020.

That said, from an overall impact to the ability to wage offensive football war perspective, I don't think it's a crippling blow. The current backups on the roster could very well be effective weapons in Day's offense. The other reason I'm not overly concerned is because I think the jury is very much out on the idea that OSU is still going to be a run first offense under Day. With the trend you see across football toward the pass first offense, the RB spot needs to be a very good player but not necessarily the kind of guy you build your offense around.

I'm thinking more Antonio Pittman in the '06 offense as the new normal for the RB position. Excellent player but the type that's easier to find in recruiting than the Beanie's and Zeke's.

As someone said elsewhere, your killer is the guy you put in the slot against their LB/S type. That will be the modern equivalent of handing the ball off to a sledgehammer 30+ times a game.

(IMO)

That's a really good point. The issue is we've missed on every RB the staff wanted. Going back to the Zeke comparison, the coaches had him ranked #1 on their board and they locked him in early. I'd also add that Zeke's development from the time he graduated HS to the time he went pro was nothing short of remarkable. He was a very good prospect, but blew expectations out of the water with his career here.

But the class is far from over and we'll see where we end up at the position before I really judge anything. The rest of our class is LOADED and I have a hard time imagining that we won't get at least 1 quality RB on board. Plus I would predict that we see a run- first offense to start the year based on what I've been told of fall camp. To the extent that RB's are being told we're pass- first, I think the on- field results are going to say otherwise.
