A LOOK AT WHERE OHIO STATE STANDS IN ITS SEARCH FOR A QUARTERBACK

93741_h.jpg

As Ohio State continues its search for a quarterback, it’s become especially clear that this year’s crop of signal callers isn’t particularly deep — nor is there an elite prospect with a perfect blend of size, arm strength and athleticism that screams ‘must get’ prospect.

In fact, the Class of 2019 doesn’t have a single five-star quarterback.

There were three five-star signal callers last cycle in Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, Georgia’s Justin Fields and USC’s J.T. Daniels, each of whom was ranked among the Top 16 prospects nationally. For comparison’s sake, Oklahoma four-star commit Spencer Rattler leads this year’s batch of prospects at No. 41 overall.

“It’s the worst I’ve ever seen,” a scout told SB Nation’s Bud Elliott during the Elite 11 Finals earlier this month. “It’s like the position skipped a year.”

Head coach Urban Meyer and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Ryan Day have echoed those sentiments on numerous occasions, so it’s no surprise they’ve struggled to find a quarterback they actually like this cycle. The Buckeyes have been connected to several names as a result, but the staff was never fell in love with or pushed hard for a commitment.

Interesting to see Fields name showing up again in some chatter.

Likely not going to end up here, but he’d be eligible in ‘20...

Thing with Fields is, whatever year he is eligible, you are going to risk losing Martell or Jack Miller
Depending on eligibility Miller might not be a loss but Miller might also change his mind and go elsewhere.... Martell would be another spring transfer or he might go immediately. either way I hope to “trust the coaches” on this and if they pursue and take Fields they know what they are doing...

typically 5* QB transfers dont work out well....

The locker room is something to consider, but Fields does not change the arithmetic unless one believes Tate is a 1 and done candidate (which he's not at that size).

2019 - Tate starts, draft eligible, likely stays 1-2 more years
2019 - Fields gets a waiver, beats out Tate, not draft eligible, likely stays 1-2 more years

That said, I would not bet against Tate.

Dont disagree at all... its a “trust the coaches” type of play here...

I don't understand how he would be eligible for a waiver?
Because transfer waivers are often a stretch. They let players walk for questionable ailments for family members. In this case, the UGA program was attacking him for his skin color.

Who knows if it would pass, but it's not conjecture like many of the family hardship waivers.

Someone I read earlier, can't recall what board as I've been enjoying various scUM related schadenfreude , speculated that if Fields files for a waiver owing to the racist remarks by the baseball player, there's really nothing the NCAA can do about it ... If they say "no" they'll look really bad... Not that looking bad has ever stopped them before, lol.. just sayin...

Why do you think we don't have a shot here? In my opinion we have every bit as a shot as the other two.

1) All things equal, odds are 1:2 that he comes here. A .33 probability that he will come. A .66 probability he does not. It is _likely_ that he does not.
2) Word is that he want's an empty QB room.

And you are correct, all things equal, "we have every bit as a shot as (either of) the other two." Note that I made no mention of our chances relative to either one of the others... only our chances relative to the combination of the others.
