tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Thoughts on the transition:

First off let me say that Ryan Day was not my first choice but I get why this decision was made. I was definitely in the "Bring me Matt Campbell" camp. Having said that I've had some time to digest everything and I am certain of one thing: this move offers the smoothest transition from both a program and recruiting standpoint.

My first thought was "have to keep the support staff". And it sounds like that is happening. Pantoni and Marotti were the first two I thought about. To hear that not only are they staying but also that Stamper and Voltolini are staying is huge. Absolutely monster. There are several other support staff I hope stay on...Weston Zernechel, Tony Tucker, Jeff Uhlenhake, etc. My next thought was about the coaching staff. The names that were most important to me were Larry Johnson, Taver Johnson, Brian Hartline, Alex Grinch and Tony Alford. Would not shock me to see LJ Sr. retire at this point but I hope he still has something left in the tank because this team can easily be a playoff contender next year. Early word is he going to be staying because he is still out recruiting which is huge for a variety of reasons. Alford already has an Assistant Head Coach title and it would not shock me to see him interview for head coaching vacancies. I would be very surprised to see Schiano, Wilson and Hinton stay on, and I'm okay with that. Studrawa and Davis are the guys I would be happy to see move on to other jobs and I think they will. My first order of business would be to see about getting Marcus Freeman up here for an interview. He's a guy that could provide immediate returns on the field and on the road.

The feedback from the 2019 class is already very positive. Most of the kids have reaffirmed. You can chalk that up to this transition and the timing of it all rather than a weeks or months long search for candidates. Promoting from within is also easiest. The fact that Meyer could still be wandering the halls of the WHAC could be big too. And Day has recruited a lot of these kids personally. He personally landed Garrett Wilson, Harry Miller, Dwan Mathis and Jack Miller. Closing out the 2019 class is going to be a challenge but it can still be a top 10 class, which in the face of a legend retiring would be stunning. Holding on to a couple of these kids, like Jordan Battle, is going to be a extremely difficult. The other big concerns for me would be Young, Chambers and Nester but that is purely me speculating. I was worried about Hickman but it sounds like he is solid. But the damage that would have been done by a weeks or months long coaching search would have been immensely greater. There could have been a mass exodus. Instead we are talking about losing a kid or two at worst. Continuity with some of these kids will be paramount, especially the uncommitted ones like Harrison. LJ Sr. staying on gives us a chance with a kid like that, although this may give him all the ammunition he needs to head north.

Day is uniquely positioned to succeed in this role, similar to what happened at Oklahoma as numerous other people have pointed out. I am fully on board and have to say this has already gone a lot smoother than I could have ever dreamed that the end of an era would go.

This is probably the most insightful thing I could read all day. Thank you.

Are there any coaches under the tutelage of LJ Sr that will some day be able to provide the education, mentorship, leadership, recruiting, etc that he provides?

Just to add, read where Craig Young is solid as well. Just leaves Battle, who some staff members are visiting tonight, Nester and Chambers as guys I am concerned about. Haven't heard from too many of the Ohio guys but they would seemingly be much easier to hold onto. Duplain is 100% off the board at this point. Broeker, Jacobs, Eichenberg, Green and Butler remain the big flip candidates for 2019. I'm not sure we see an Urban special like we have in years past (Darnell Wright was the one that many were holding out hope for). The main targets are still Harrison, D'Von Ellies, Jared Harrison-Hunte and Dawand Jones. Some other names will simply HAVE to pop up in the coming weeks. Trevon Raphael is an in-state guy I could see getting a look. Tre'Von Morgan and Tyler Foster are a couple more.

To add to the tweet above that is probably the angle they will take with Battle...that he can "revisit" OSU officially.

GPA material and you articulated many of my thoughts on the recruiting fronts. I think keeping much of the staff and support will go a long way in keeping much of our current '19 class in tact. The guys you are concerned on are identical to my list, particularly Battle, who I think was likely flipping anyways. In terms of closing out on uncommitted guys, it is going to be a struggle imo...I think Wright will likely be off the board soon and I just really hope this doesn't push Harrison up north, but it can't help. I think overall we should be able to put together a top 15 class with some real nice commitments, but definitely don't expect the strong finish we are accustomed to with UFM. On that end, I expect the 2020 dream class to lose some immediate momentum as the UFM retirement sinks in with those recruits...I still expect a great class for 2020, but there just is no replacing UFM on the recruiting trail.

Have to be honest in saying that the resignation was quite a kick in my gut and one of the biggest reasons was recruiting. And that is no indictment on Day or the rest of the staff, because we have some awesome recruiters in Columbus moving forward and I still expect top 10 classes. But what UFM did on the recruiting trail was just unprecedented and we realistically cannot expect what he did in the recruiting department.

Concern over Harry Miller?

We need to hold on to him. Badly.

Seems like there is legit concern there. Who knows... it’s Day’s job to figure out this recruiting game in a hurry. When Urban came here in 2011, recruiting was a dumpster fire and he put together a solid first class at the last minute. If Day can’t figure it out, then we’d have been better off foregoing continuity for a shiny new coach rather than a young offensive coordinator.
