2018 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Still super early, but gonna give this a shot... 25 scholarships for 2018 recruiting class

QB: Emory Jones
- You could make an argument that he's the most complete QB that Urban has ever landed. Outperformed and outclassed both Tate Martell and Danny Clark at Friday Night Lights last year and has an absolute cannon for an arm with consistently tight spirals. With Urban looking to put more of an emphasis on the passing game, Emory is a must-get in this class. Psyched to have him on board already
RB: Brian Snead - Plays like FSU backs of the past and has a similar skill set to Mike Weber. Surprising speed for how well he's built
RB: Maurice Washington III/Tavion Thomas - Can't go wrong with either guy. Maurice brings a lot of flexibility with his skill set and could be a dynamic playmaker in this offense... also a potential Pivot. Tavion is a freak athlete that is dominating while still just learning the position. Best in-state RB on film in a long time and could be scary good with S&C and coaching
RB/Pivot: Jaelen Gill - Has elite speed and would be a perfect fit as a Pivot playmaker in Urban's offense. Difference maker. Could definetly see snaps as a RB, ala Demario McCall
WR: Kamryn Babb - Kamryn's the complete package skill-wise... does everything well. Gonna be a star at the next level and Buckeyes in great shape with him at this point. Hoping the staff tells him he could be the next great Missourian in S&G and makes him a huge priority. If we miss on Kamryn, I hope we go hard at Joshua Moore
WR: L'Christian "Blue" Smith - Still a little raw, but ceiling is sky high. With his size and athletic ability, once he starts focusing on a single sport and Coach Mick gets a hold of him, he's going to be a monster and a match-up nightmare for DBs at 6'6"
WR: Iverson Clement - His electric, unpredictable jukes are remeniscent of former TSUN RB Fitzgerald Touissant's HS film, but Iverson has another gear when it comes to speed and he's surprisingly adept at breaking tackles. Many feel he'll be a RB at the next level, but I think he's got the potential to be an elite slot... if he has the hands. Would LOVE to see him at Friday Night Lights
TE: Jeremy Ruckert/Mustapha Muhammad - Jeremy outplayed #1 TE (and PSU commit) Zach Kuntz at Friday Night Lights last year and would be a fantastic fit for the Bucks with his blend of blocking and catching ability. If Jeremy goes elsewhere, Mustapha is a solid blocker, runs polished routes, and is great after the catch.
OT: Jackson Carman - An absolute must-get. Jackson is the complete package. Fundamentally sound, great feet, aggressive hands, brings the nasty, quick off the snap, and guaranteed to make a pancake when pulling from OT. Along with Emory Jones, the biggest priority on offense in this class.
OT: Nicholas Petit- Frere - Freakishly athletic for the position and could develop into a superstar if paired with Coach Mick & Coach Stud. Will need to gain some mass, but has a great frame for it. Probably a long shot, but well worth the effort
OT: Will Lawrence/Jaelyn Duncan/Rasheed Walker - Need a 3rd OT in this class, but having trouble digging up any film on any of these guys. Lawrence will be announcing his college choice by the end of the month, per his twitter in December.
OG: Fredrick Scruggs - Plays like one of those mean Tressel O-Linemen of old. Absolutely love this kid and already have him penciled into this class
WDE: Micah Parsons/Tyreke Smith - Both play similarly, but Micah is obviously much more polished and put together at this stage. With the sheer amount of visits Micah has made to Columbus after committing, Buckeyes definetly have a chance at flipping Micah from PSU, which would be ginormous.
WDE/LB: Xavier Peters - No offer yet, but plays LB at the HS level like his hair is on fire and has fantastic speed. SUPER raw, but has the size, God-given ability, and potential to be a terror at DE with some coaching at the next level
SDE: Greg Emerson - Long shot? Sure, but an absolute demon on the strong side that Coach Johnson could mold into another 1st rounder. Love his film. Hoping he makes it back up here again for Friday Night Lights this year
DT: Matthew Jones - Simply put, Matthew's presence as a dominant, space-eating 1-tech would add another dimension to this D that we have not seen since Jonathan Hankins graduated. Mentioned before in his thread that I was 50/50 with him playing O-Line... definetly misspoke. He's a 1-tech DT all the way; we're in on WAY to many great O-linemen options and he's too valuable on the D-line to put him anywhere else. The must-get player on the defensive side of the ball.
DT: Taron Vincent - The most impressive and physically dominant HS DT that I have seen on film in a long time. If Ohio State were to land both Matthew and Taron, you will physically feel the collective shudder of the entirity of the college football world
DT: Aeneas Hawkins- How Aeneas is not a top 100 player nationally, let alone a top 10-15 player in the state (!), is completely baffling to me. Aeneas has easily the most impressive in-state DT film since Michael Bennett. Looked absolutely dominant against one of the hardest schedules in all of HS football last year
LB: Adrian Jackson - With Palaie Gaotote surprising us all and picking USC **crying Jordan**, Adrian becomes the new focus (though hoping we can get Palaie on campus for a visit later this year). An amazing athlete and the front runner for Colorado's Mr. Football, Adrian has solid coverage skills, flies all over the field, and is a great hitter.
LB: Dallas Gant - Fundamentally sound, solid, and adept at reading blocks. Would love to see what Coach Mick can do with him in the weight room
LB: Payton Wilson - Extremely athletic, surprisingly fast, and is a vicious hitter. One of the most entertaining films I've seen this far for 2018. Hoping we have a chance at him by offering him as early as we have, as he's a potential game changer
CB: Asante Samuel Jr./Houston Griffith - If Asante were 4 inches taller, he would be the #1 overall recruit in this class... he's that talented. Pound for pound one of the hardest hitters in his class. Would fit into OSU's BIA defensive backfield like a glove. Asante listed OSU in his top 2 in December, but thinking FSU is going to be hard to overcome. Houston is getting some fabulous coaching at IMG, but he gets lost even in his own highlight film due to the ridiculous talent he's surrounded by. Houston will be WELL ahead of the game X's & O's wise once he gets on the campus of his choice
S: Jaiden Woodbey - Best DB on the west coast. Like Asante, a stone-cold playmaker that fits the BIA unit perfectly. Great ball skills and excellent at returning the ball the other way once he gets his hands on it. Should make big waves on special teams right off the bat and will also benefit from a depleted depth chart at S at OSU
S: BJ Foster - Doesn't have Jaiden's ball-hawking skills, but a fearsome hitter and has fantastic instincts for the position. With the Texas contingent from the 2017 class and only 3 true safeties on scholarship on the roster for the 2018 season, I think the opportunity at Ohio State makes BJ pull the trigger and head north for college.
S/ATH: Amari Burney/Isheem Young/Leon O'Neal Jr. - Would love to get one more safety that could also be versatile to play multiple positions. Judging by the films I can tell you this much: the staff is looking for their safeties to be big hitters with ball hawking insticts, great ability with their hands, and are special teams demons. Any of these three would be fantastic gets

A few comments... I don't think you'll see OSU take 3 safeties and only one corner. They essentially play 3 CBs in their base defense and add a 4th in the nickel. A guy at or near the top of their CB list is Anthony Cook. He's going to be tough to pull out of Texas but OSU has a realistic shot.

On defense, OSU will need at least 2 and preferably 3 DEs in this class. A couple of the guys you have listed at DE, Tyreke Smith and Greg Emerson, would likely end up as 3-tech players at OSU. KJ Henry is a guy to watch.

The one question mark out of all the positions for me was whether or not to take a 3rd safety, and I probably should have left that 3rd one off altogether. My thought process was with not having enough true safeties on the team in 2018 to make up a 2-deep, I decided a 3rd take at safety as necessary as long as they were athletic and versatile enough to potentially play another position. I can't imagine taking more than one CB in this class at this point after taking 5 in 2017 and not graduating anyone at the position (though Kendall Sheffield may be one-and-done). My thought is the staff will do what we did with DE recruiting last year: bring in the one that they feel is the best one in the country and bank CB scholarships for next year's class.

As far as DE's after this year, we're losing Tyquan and Jalyn, likely losing Hubbard to the draft, and we haven't heard anything yet on Darius Slade's achilles tear, but that's the type of injury that could potentially end playing careers. That's likely 3 (and hopefully not 4) players we'll need to replace, so my thought is to take no less than 3 in this class, especially with OSU's penchant for turning DE's into DT's and only taking one DE in 2017. Agree to disagree on Tyreke and Greg, and I don't see KJ leaving the south.
