The State of the 2017 Ohio State Recruiting Class - Who's Left?

MeyerChart.jpg

Jaylen Harris – WR – Cleveland, Ohio – 4-Star Recruit

With the sudden news that receiver Tyjon Lindsey has decided to reopen his recruitment, the Buckeyes currently only have a commitment from Trevon Grimes at wide receiver. With the lack of production at the position last year outside of Curtis Samuel and one game from Noah Brown, the Buckeyes are looking to add more playmakers to their offense. They missed out on Donovan Peoples-Jones who went to Michigan, and have now set their focus on getting in-state target Jaylen Harris. Harris is a 6’5” 210lb. wide receiver out of Cleveland, Ohio who has offers to play at over 20 schools, but seems to have his sights set on the Buckeyes, Michigan State and Tennessee. Right now most experts expect him to end up in the Scarlet and Gray, but his recruitment is starting to remind me of a year or two ago when some thought Donnie Corley would end up with the Buckeyes and he ended up at Michigan State. I don’t foresee that happening here, and expect Harris to end up a Buckeye shortly after his official visit on January 20.

Prediction – Ohio State

Thayer Munford – OT – Cincinnati, Ohio – 4-Star Recruit

At one time the Buckeyes had three offensive linemen in the class with Wyatt Davis, Josh Myers and Jake Moretti, however Moretti decommitted and then committed to Colorado back in November. The Buckeyes thought they might have had a big replacement out of Tennessee with Trey Smith, but were ultimately beat out by the home state Volunteers.

The Buckeyes have lost two transfers so far this offseason in Evan Lisle and Kyle Trout, and with possibly more coming they are still looking to add depth on the line. Thayer Munford is an interesting case, as of right now he does not have an offer to play for the Buckeyes, but he will be making an official visit to Columbus at some point this month. Munford currently has a crystal ball leader of Kentucky, which I believe is where he ends up if Ohio State decides to pass on him. If they do offer him during his official visit, then I believe he ends up playing for the Buckeyes next season.

Prediction – Ohio State

Morgan Ellison - RB - Pickerington, Ohio - 3-Star Recruit

I always thought that the Buckeyes needed an additional running back in this class, especially with the depth issues now that Curtis Samuel has moved on to the NFL. The Buckeyes only have four true running backs on their roster, and an injury to any of those puts some serious strain on some otherwise undeveloped guys. With Ohio State missing out on Cam Akers, who decided to attend Florida State, most thought the Buckeyes would end their running back recruitment with J.K. Dobbins being the only back in this class. I have been high on Morgan Ellison (6-1 217) since I saw his first highlights, and think he can be a special player given the right development and circumstances. Apparently the Buckeyes were in contact with him yesterday, and although he is verbally committed to Ohio University, if he were to receive an offer to play at Ohio State, I don't think he passes it up. I believe the coaching staff at Ohio State sees the same thing in regards to the depth at running back position, and will possibly pull the trigger on Ellison, making him the second back in the class of 2017.

I've been rooting for Ellison to get an offer since he tore up the summer camp in Columbus this summer. Good size to go with the speed and quickness of Dobbins, and he has decent wheels himself. Depth is needed in the RB room with only Weber, Williams, McCall and Dobbins

Can anybody put forth a theory on the lack of P5 offers for Ellison.

Is it solely based on his injury history?

Seems like the type of prospect that would prosper at Sharty, IU, Iowa etc.
My guess would be, yes. Major leg injuries in 2 straight years is almost like a repellent to schools. The fact that he had such big year was why he's getting big time looks now. But those injuries were serious.

And Ellison is dropping some serious subliminals on twitter... :roll2:

WITH SIX PLAYERS LEAVING EARLY OVER THE LAST TWO SEASONS, IS IT TIME TO DECLARE OHIO STATE DBU?

B.I.A.

You'll see that a lot if you follow an Ohio State defensive back, from the present or recent past, on a social media platform. A three-letter acronym used to help describe how the Buckeyes' secondary feels about itself.

Best in America.

.
.
.
Four of the six — five-star corner Jeffrey Okudah, five-star corner Shaun Wade, four-star safety Isaiah Pryor and four-star corner Marcus Williamson — are already enrolled at Ohio State and will participate in spring ball. A fifth, former five-star corner and Alabama signee Kendall Sheffield, who spent this past season in junior college, is expected to do the same. Four-star cornerback Amir Riep is slated to sign with the Buckeyes in February and join the team in June.

It's an absolutely loaded defensive back haul and certainly one that can contend for playing time right away with all of these early departures. The incoming talent is certainly arriving at the right time.

There don't seem to be an overwhelming number of candidates for this mass exodus to continue next season for Ohio State. Then again, that's what we all thought after last season and then Hooker and Lattimore seemingly came out of nowhere and enjoyed breakout seasons.

Perhaps that's because Ohio State is the new Defensive Back University. Perhaps DBU is, in fact, BIA.

No knowledge on where he's looking but Jeff Badet would be interesting addition this off-season as a Grad-transfer.

Had 31 catches last year for Kentucky and had an average of 21.6 yards a catch. He'd be an instant starter for the Buckeyes, IMO and add some needed experience on the outside. I think he'd be a no brainer addition if they can get him.

Again I have no idea if there is mutual interest, but my guess is every school in the country is putting calls into him. I think most thought he'd just finish his career out at UK.
