tOSU Recruiting Discussion

My best guess on this class at this point (19 man class):

QB Danny Clark
RB Todd Sibley
WR Trevon Grimes
WR Jaylen Harris
WR Emmanuel Greene/Donovan Peoples-Jones
OL Josh Myers
OL Micah Clark
OL Jake Moretti
DT Darnell Ewell
DT Jerron Cage
LB Santino Marchiol
LB (player to be named)
CB Shaun Wade
CB Lamont Wade
CB Marcus Williamson
S Jeffrey Okudah
S/LB Isaiah Pryor
S/LB Brendon White
K Blake Haubeil

Emphasis in 2017 has got to be on defense... LB, S, and DT specifically

With fewer scholarship numbers, we've got to be SUPER picky about the quality of the guys we bring in (think Pete Carroll's USC recruiting classes). This would be a 4-5 5*, 14-15 4* class... unreal amount of talent, but surprisingly VERY realistic (DPJ is the only guy I'm remotely reaching for, and we're going to be in it until the very end for him). Would be hands-down the best DB class we have ever landed on paper. Would love to get a SDE/DT combo kind of player in this class as well, but I think I'm pushing it with 19 considering the amount of seniors on the team currently

Would love that class. Here is how I would break things down:

QB: If Collier stays I think they roll with Clark and call it a day. If for some reason Collier transfers (and I'm not suggesting I have heard that he will) you might see a second QB in this class.

RB: The staff sure seems to be recruiting like they want a second RB in this class with guys like Najee Harris, Cam Akers, Anthony McFarland, Trey Sermon and Adarius Lemons garnering a lot of early attention from the staff. Will be interesting to see if they feel the need to add another player here.

WR: I might substitute Tyjon Lindsey for DPJ as I think he is going to be a tough pull out of Michigan and OSU seems to be really putting a lot of emphasis on Tyjon. Adding Grimes and Harris to Mack and Victor sets OSU up for years. Anything else is gravy.

TE: Dotson or bust and I'm not 100% sure he is a take right now based on the numbers. Just not a huge priority with five underclassmen listed on the roster at TE. I know they really wanted Cole Kmet and maybe Trey Pugh slides in here as a TE/ATH?

OL: Isaiah Wilson would be nice but I don't think OSU gets him. Myers and Moretti are a great start and I think the staff will be extra picky here only taking one or possibly two additional OL. Micah Clark, Tony Gray, Robert Hainsey, Jordan McNair and Joel Honigford are early names to watch here. I think you take the best player you can get to go with Moretti and Myers and call it a day.

DE: Josh Kaindoh is a guys you chase forever. Chase Young and Luiji Vilain are two guys with early offers that have been to visit. At DT I really think OSU has a great shot at Fred Hansard and Aubrey Solomon, both of whom might be slightly higher on the board than Ewell. Corey Malone-Hatcher was another early offer guy that has visited multiple times and I think he probably projects inside.

LB: I think you asked a critical question...do either White or Pryor fit in here? Marichol is a guy I really like and him being at IMG is a plus but I don't see him in this class. I really like Antjuan Simmons out of Michigan as a versatile LB.

CB: The law firm of Wade and Wade. Bookend five stars. Add Williamson and you have an amazing haul at corner. Darnay Holmes would be great but I don't see it happening. Is there any way Amir Riep doesn't make it into this class for whatever reason? I doubt it...I think he is in eventually.

S: Are Pryor and White safeties? Is Shaun Wade possibly? I expect Okudah to be one pure safety in this class. Devon Hunter is another guy I really like. DeAngelo Gibbs is a pipe dream and LeCounte is gone for good. Jaylen Kelly-Powell is another guy getting a lot of early attention. As usual DB will be one of the position groups that will be the most fun to monitor moving forward.

K: They got the guy they wanted. McCullough last year and Chrisman this year means OSU is set at ST.

I think the class probably ends up at 18 to 20 signees. I know Coach Meyer likes to have around 10 Ohio guys in each class which is going to be very tough. Clark, Sibley, Myers, Cage, Williamson and White make six and I think Amir Riep finds a way into this class as well. Seven might be the most they can squeeze into this class from in-state. Any other year I would think guys like JaVonte Richardson, Danny Davis, Lynn Bowden, Tyrell Aijan and James Hudson might have offers but just not the case with his class being projected to be so small.

As usual, anything I have written above is completely useless and the '17 class on NLOID will probably not look anything like what I have described...that's what makes recruiting fun.

Will be interesting to see if we had any '17 silents sitting and waiting for NLOID to pass to verbal to us. Seems like we get at least one the week after NLOID but with so many early '17 commits, I am not sure about this year.

Posted this at 10:42AM. The self-proclaimed dean posted his 2017 recruiting class at 1:21PM. It's nearly identical. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
I know that he modeled the structure of his nightly update after Birm's "Hurry Up." BTW, you know that he was a basketball coach at a big HS? Used to post it next morning, then moved it to night of to be like the Hurry Up. Just to let you know, he reported the story first. Then the Hurry Up added Friday, and then BK added Friday. Did you know that he did, in fact, speak to said recruit?

Should be a small class. I think you shoot for the stars early on, which it appears they've done.

In addition to what they already have: Lamont Wade, Jeffrey Okudah, and Trevon Grimes are guys I expect they'll be able to reel in, but we've seen early leads fade before with out-of-state recruits. DT is an absolute necessity and I think they need to cast a wide net to bring in 2-3 of them.

By Urban standards. I'd be shocked if they take less than 20.
I think there would need to be many early entrees for that to happen though. Or many 5th year guys not getting a ticket back. Otherwise, it will have to be a small class. The senior class is absurdly tiny. There's only 6 seniors if I'm counting correctly. And one is the Aussie K who has a greyshirt behind him in Drue Chrisman for 2016. So really 5 seniors. And for all we know the 2 guys who can't be back on the team for 2016 for the numbers to work (currently at 87) are redshirt seniors to be, like Warren Ball. So if that is the case, there could literally be 3 seniors leaving after 2016.

This is what Urban calls "a nightmare". You not only have to get help immediately from the freshman class, you have less scholarships for the next year.
But, it's not a perfect Urban world and this is why he makes the big Bucks. We have one of the best Ohio State coaching staffs ever! They will certainly earn their big money this year.
We could get off to a very un-Ohio State start before the kids start to grow into their positions.
It won't be boring that's for sure! :)

Yes, drue is a 2017 recruit. No, that does not also erase cam as a senior.

There are many charts, like in the thread I'm about to link to avoid guesses :p like Warren ball, who is done this year and does not count nor erase any further spots from 2017. That already happened.

They aren't recruiting for merely 2-4 more spots. There will be plenty of attrition. I laid out a general breakdown here. This isn't specific but shoes you generally how they could end up there. I didn't include the glut of 6 TEs on scholarship, with find of them beginning this season with the same eligibility
Over on scout, I speculated about how OSU could find room to sign 20-22 next year in the potentially epic 2017 recruiting class.

All of these numbers are for 2017, not 2016.

91 - scholarships (2017)
+2 - Pridgeon, Harrison
--------------------------------
93
-3 medicals
----------------
90
-3 NFL (Kwon, Conley, Hubbard)
-----------------
87

To add 10-12 more, you need attrition. This is pure speculation:

2-3 - 4th yr jrs walk at sr day 2016. I see 3 guys who could fit this category.

1 - non qualifier or grayshirt

1-2 - transfers - guys that are unhappy or have other reasons to leave.

2-3 - dismissals. We are 1.5 years from Fall 2017. Kids mess up, and backups don't get second chances.

2-3 - OL move on. There are 18 on scholarship in 2017, yet they're signing a 19th (Pridgeon) to get to 5. Some aren't cutting it.

1-2 - DT move on. There are two trios of DTs, Sprinkle/Munger/Hill as Srs in 17, and Landers, Hamilton, Alabi. Do they all make it two more years? Especially when you factor in that Jones is actually a fourth DT in that Landers trio and Cornell could be.

87 spots

9-14 - speculative attrition

-------

78-73 spots (w/ ten 2017 verbals factored in)

7-12 more spots

aka

17-22 signees in 2017.
Berger has since been announced as a medical hardship guy.
