Game Thread tOSU at Wiscy, Nov 17th, 3:30 ABC

And after last night they are probably going to end up playing Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

Go Ducks. And fuck you Curt Phillips, Brett and all the other assholes in Madison for making me cheer for Chip Kelly and the Ducks.

Actually the Big Ten rep will probably play either Stanford or UCLA, as Stanford now controls its own destiny. They have the tiebreaker over Oregon after last night, but will need to beat UCLA two weeks in a row to get to Pasadena.

8) You are a pessimist so I'm not that concerned.

Bingo.

There's a huge difference between Wisconsin at home and Iowa on the road.

That being said, I was impressed with all the new looks that Hoke introduced having had 2 weeks to work Gardner into his offense. Coupled with all the ways Wisconsin managed to get our defense out of position and to go wide with backs who are a hell of a lot slower than Robinson.

When Shazier went down I thought I saw last year all over again.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy the team is 11-0 but geez, I expected some fireworks on offense with the extra week to prepare. Instead, the offense actually seemed to regress.

Has anyone else noticed on pass plays, Braxton seems more reactive instead of proactive? The timing is just not there because he is waiting for the receiver to get open instead of actually attacking the defense.

Did anyone else notice that on (some) pass plays, receivers were not even turning around to look for the ball, or to see if Braxton was scrambling? WTF?!

I agree. I honestly thought I was watching Tresselball 101 in the second half. And they aren't a good enough team to do that this year, at least consistently.

It did seem that they were running the same 4 plays....

I'm a little more disappointed by what we saw from the defense (the scheme, not the players) on the final drive in regulation for Wisconsin. Their QB got hot and our DBs were 7-10 yards off of the receivers seemingly every play.

Agreed. I'm really hoping this was a combination of not wanting to show scUM anything and thinking that sooner or later Brax would break a big one (which never happened). But that is about as scarlet and gray colored glasses an approach as you can take, I think.

I kept wondering if the thinking of our D-coordinators was that the QB with two career starts didn't have it in him to make accurate throws. But to his credit, he did.

OT loss leaves Badgers with a bad taste

Wisconsin's players and coaches will be able to take comfort knowing that in two weeks they will be playing in the Big Ten Conference title game, with a berth in the Rose Bowl on the line.

In the interim, however, the 21-14 overtime loss to No. 6 Ohio State on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium will be agonizing and take time to shake.
"Probably until we play them next year," junior defensive end David Gilbert said quietly.

UW (7-4, 4-3 Big Ten) will have to regroup quickly this week for its regular-season finale at Penn State (7-4, 5-2).

The Buckeyes (11-0, 7-0), who got a 2-yard touchdown run from tailback Carlos Hyde and fourth-down pass break-up from safety Christian Bryant to hand UW its second home overtime loss of the season, will win the Leaders Division title outright.

Penn State can finish second under first-year coach Bill O'Brien.

However, with the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions ineligible for postseason play because of NCAA sanctions, UW will represent the division in the title game, one victory away from a third consecutive Rose Bowl appearance.

UW quarterback Curt Phillips, who capped a 41-yard touchdown drive late in regulation with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Pedersen to help the Badgers force overtime, acknowledged the Ohio State players will enjoy bragging rights in the off-season.

But . . .

"We took care of our business and didn't get ourselves in (NCAA) trouble to where we can go play in the (Big Ten title) game," said Phillips, who finished 14 of 25 for 154 yards and a touchdown. "So we'll make the most of that. Talk doesn't really bother me."

This loss will bother the UW coaches and players for many reasons.

Man. You know you have shattered the previous benchmarks for "mindset of a truly 2nd rate program" when you are chest thumping over a technicality that allows you to back into a CCG after finishing 3rd in your division.

"Took care of business" this year means you finished ahead of Indiana, Illinois and Purdue numbnuts. Congratulations.

Pretty typical of their program though. The only team I can recall clearly being the best in the B1G and not needing a weird rule or tie breaker to help them was the 1999 team.

Indeed.

1993 and 1998 used the old "most recent" rule to get to a RB.

2010 team went in a tie breaker over a team they lost to on the field (MSU).

2011 team got a rematch, and a gift call, against a team they lost to on the field in the first year of the new format. Any format used prior to 2011, they don't go.

2012 gets a shot because they are lucky enough to have not one but two teams finish ahead of them and be ineligible for the post season. Once again they most likely get a shot at a rematch with a team that already beat them.

You could make the strongest case for the 2010 team being legit and I wouldn't argue it too hard, they kicked our ass but the rest of it is the team version of Kirk Ferentz winning another B10 coach of the year award. Only Wisconsin fans and the Ferentz family take it seriously.

I noticed similar things. Receivers were open early in their routes, but Braxton didn't get the ball out. When Braxton had to scramble around behind the LOS receivers were not coming back to the ball. It looked like the quick hitters were there all day - slants, short outs, etc. Brax just seemed like he was looking for the big gain downfield on every pass.
