Game Thread tOSU at USC, Sat. Oct. 31st, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

Meh. I think you need to give them both a try, if there's any doubt about which is which.
If you know Dude #1 is gooder than Dude #2, you use Dude #1. Easy.
But if it's 2001 and your starting quarterback is suspended for a DUI and you're playing for a chance at a conference championship if you win the next 2 games, and Illinois is coming to town with the team that would eventually win the conference championship, you need to be ready to put the new #2 quarterback in over the new #1 quarterback.
For those of you who are too awesome to remember, McMullen started against Illinois, with plans to bring in Krenzel to try him out, too.

My favorite McMullen moment was him skipping a pass to the TE in 2003 and sending the cult into new levels of apoplectic shock when it was called complete.

Two-Minute Drill: Ryan Day, Jaylen McClain and Carson Hinzman Preview USC, Discuss Quarterback Change

0-6-1170x780.jpeg

Ohio State is back in game-week mode as the Buckeyes come off their off week and prepare for a road matchup against USC this Saturday.

Head coach Ryan Day, safety Jaylen McClain and offensive lineman Carson Hinzman met with reporters Tuesday to discuss the team’s preparation for the Trojans and what Ohio State needs to do heading into the second half of the season. Day also discussed the health of the team and provided a number of updates coming off of the bye week.

Here’s what Day, McClain and Hinzman had to say ahead of Saturday’s matchup. You can also watch the full press conference videos below.

Ryan Day

+ On the quarterback competition, Day said both Luke Fahey and Tavien St. Clair practiced well last week. Fahey was ahead of St. Clair going into the Indiana game, but both quarterbacks are working hard. Day wants to see how the next couple of practices go before deciding who gives Ohio State the best chance to win.

+ Day said the team is working on packages for both quarterbacks, and it’s possible both could play against USC. He hasn’t decided what the circumstances would be, but said the staff will figure out a plan later in the week. Every rep will be important this week, and Ohio State will need to give one quarterback the majority of the first-team reps to get him ready to start. Day said both quarterbacks need to prepare as if they could play at any point.

+ On what he’s looking for from the quarterbacks, Day said toughness is the most important thing, both physically, mentally and emotionally. The offense needs to make routine plays routinely, stay on schedule and avoid making bad situations worse. Everyone on the team, including the defense, special teams, offensive line, receivers and running backs, needs to rally around the quarterback.

+ Day said St. Clair has seemed more locked in and energized, especially with the opportunity to play. He said both quarterbacks made progress last week and that their approach has been good. They need to build trust with their teammates and show they can move the offense.

+ Day doesn’t want the quarterback who starts looking over his shoulder or worrying that one mistake will get him pulled. The plan is to let the quarterback play and trust the coaching staff’s decision. Day said players can’t let what happens on one play affect the next.

+ On USC and Lincoln Riley, Day said Riley and his staff have done a great job recruiting and developing young talent. USC has a lot of speed and size, and Day said the Buckeyes know what they’re up against. Ohio State will need to stay focused and prepare to win on the road.

+ Day said the offense has to focus on the strengths of whichever quarterback plays. The staff tries to teach all the quarterbacks most of the offense, but it also needs to adjust to what each player does best. The veteran offensive line and receivers, along with the running backs, will need to help compensate and make the transition easier.

+ On the bye week, Day said the staff evaluated personnel, scheme and coaching to determine what gives Ohio State the best chance to win. The team has several personnel groupings and different players who can bring different things to the field, so the staff needs to make sure it’s putting the right players in the right situations.

+ Day said Austin Siereveld’s availability will affect the offensive line plans. Siereveld is expected to return to practice this week, but the staff needs to see how he responds and whether he can play a full game before making a decision.

+ On Phillip Bell, Day said he’s getting better each week and earning more playing time. His work on special teams has helped create more opportunities for him on offense, and the Buckeyes will need him this week.

+ Day said the running backs will need to step up and run downhill and physically with a young quarterback. He expects their numbers to increase as the season moves forward.

+ Day said Kenyatta Jackson and Jay Timmons were among the players who got an opportunity to rest during the bye week. The staff will see how they progress during the week, with a better idea of their availability closer to the game.

+ On the team’s approach, Day said everyone needs to do their job rather than try to do too much. The margin for error is smaller with a young quarterback, so the Buckeyes need to be focused and execute their assignments.

USC head coach Lincoln Riley is still confident in his Trojans. With his back against the wall and his job potentially on the line on Halloween night when Ohio State touches down in Los Angeles, Riley claimed that USC can beat any team.

Riley claimed that every game is a make-or-break game after the Trojans lost 24-7 to Wisconsin in Madison. His team is now 6-2 after being bludgeoned by the Badgers.

"Every game makes or breaks you. I mean, that's college football. This isn't the NFL. Every game is big and really important. All the games we've won to get to this point have makes or breaks. So every game is important," Riley said postgame.

"This game was important. We didn't take care of business. But there's a lot of parity right now, and the toughest teams can battle back from tough losses. So I have a lot of confidence in this team, and I have a lot of confidence that, when we're at our best, we can beat anybody. But we've got to play our best, and we've got a lot of work to do to get ready for the next week (against Ohio State)."

This one actually is make-or-break for Riley. In every way imaginable.

Pretty sure.

Wasn't it?
It's never a bad morning when you start it out looking at OSU beating PSU highlights......let's go to the tape!

Now, dear reader (not Jax....he already knows), you might be wondering how I found this so quickly. If you are, welcome....you're new here. Normally you'd have to comb through an entire highlight reel waiting until you find the play you're looking for. But highlights put together by Penn State fans have a section dedicated to all the ways the world is out to get them. Somebody will also point it out in the comment section. Often times, you don't even need to be watching the video of the call they're griping about.......they'll just reference every call that has ever gone against them every opportunity they get.

In conclusion.........yep. That's Scott McMullen throwing a pass to Ben Hartsock on 3rd and 3 that he did not catch, but was given a first down.

I love watching OSU/Penn State highlights from years gone by. It reminds me that they have had the EXACT same quarterback every year this century, save for Darryl Clark and Robinson.

Lincoln Riley is facing a potential three game losing streak, losing to Wisconsin and having back to back games against THEE and Indy. Would not be surprised in the least bit to see him take risks. That is - trick plays, going on 4th down, not settle for FGs, etc. He's going to pull out all the stops, imho.
Of course, that could also backfire. Which could result in a lopsided victory for the good guys.
