Game Thread tOSU at USC, Sat. Oct. 31st, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

View attachment 97127

That's a stat line that says Ohio State should have won fairly comfortably. They didn't and infact lost in a frustrating an inexcusable way. Penalties is one reason - 3 false starts in the red zone, 3 other false starts in 3rd and short that made them 3rd and longer.

One thing that was a theme in 2024 (with one huge exception against TCUN) and for most of 2025 until the Indiana and Miami games was efficiency. The numbers say this should have been a comfortable win with the offense, but I don't think anyone would say it was remotely efficient.

And the defensive side was and is a problem. Again. If you buy that the Illinois defense was a schematic thing they "fixed", then what the hell was tonight? The middle of the defense was tissue paper soft all night long. And yeah, the tackling was garbage too. Like I've said a few times tonight I really want to see how many actual broken tackles there were and what the total yards after contact end up being because I'm fairly certain more than half of USC's total yards came after contact tonight.

This a million times this. Ineffective in red zone, killer penalties and soft defense = L

Allowing Beau Atkinson on the field ever again would be another major coaching malpractice. I think he's had about a handful of mind numbingly dumb penalties this year while on the other hand can't think of 1 overly positive play he's made.

His penalty was a continuation of on the field tackle. Did he need to throw him to ground probably not but most times that causes a ruckus on the sidelines and not much else

My only take away from that is Houston getting helped off the field and feeling dread.
True, but he was putting about twice as much weight on that leg as Kenyatta was after iu

Plus now he'll only fly past his man at half speed at the goal line and thus perfectly time the tfl. I think he surprised himself with his arrival speed on that one

He didn't really throw him down. It sort of looked like it, but he actually let go and didn't follow through. the penalty flag was thrown by someone without an angle.

There's a body of work conversation, but this one was not like the others.

Do officials know the personal foul history of repeat offenders? You may be more liable to get looser flags thrown if you have built up.a body of work

Yeah especially later in the game when someone on their team jumps on a down and possibly out of bounds played on a kickoff and gets nothing
