I think Sayin is a statistically accurate deep ball thrower because they design around his limitations and he has probably the best WR corp in college football. I don't think he takes the top off the defense at the same level as previous QBs under Day. I personally think he has a limit to how deep he can throw and other QBs had the ability to throw further with more velocity and touch. Sayin has to put everything he has to throw his deep ball, it isn't effortless like Will Howard.

I think the offense is more compressed vertically with Sayin. Even just watching Jeremiah Smith highlights from his freshman year to sophomore year, you can see it. I don't think defenses fear Sayin deep ball but this team should be feared going deep because of our WRs.

While I might be wrong on this, I think at some point Will Howard said he realized he couldn't really over throw Jeremiah Smith when going deep because how fast he is. You see this in the highlights, Howard gets better and better at leading Jeremiah Smith as the season goes on. Too often Smith has to stop or come back for the ball with Sayin when going deep. That's the difference between Smith walking into the end zone vs having to make a contested catch then not getting any YAC.

I guess being stuck in an endless cycle of playoff disappointment is better than being saddled with 9-3/8-4 type affairs. At some point you have to take the risk though if Day keeps showing he can't beat other upper level teams more consistently

In a sense, Ohio State got the Curt Cignetti of the 2000s with Jim Tressel. I know that he didn't bring the whole Youngstown team with him the way Cignetti did but they brought a coach up from the lower divisions who had a history of winning championships. Trying to hire the next big thing is always risky. You could get the next "home run hire" with another Cignetti, or the next "the jury is still out" with another Kalen Deboer or Dan Lanning, or the "what were we thinking" with another Billy Napier.

This choke was written in the stars the second Sark went for that first 4th down where a lot of coaches punt and they got it. Then you had Texas somehow recovering 2 fumbles where our guys were right there and couldn't secure the ball.....and then yes a couple of very uncharacteristic drops by Smith.

Like I keep saying. Bet your ass at attitude from the coaches in the locker room was that the game was in the bag and we could just go through the motions and play out the W. Zero adjustments outside of the negative adjustment on defense where they went 3 man rush shell most of the 2nd half. Zero fire or energy from the players was likely this attitude from the coaches rubbing off on them.

LOL yeah I'm not going to get pissed at force feeding the ball to the space alien. Just like I'm not going to get mad about the failed 4th down conversion. People always complain about settling for FGs then want to get mad when it doesn't work. Fact is giving up three long 3 TD drives in the fourth alone, the offense disappearing for a half, AND burning all of that time at the end of the game was coaching malpractice. Only way I feel better about this is if we learned that Vegas sent Day a picture at halftime of trained snipers on his family. Otherwise this was awful.

It's a bit torturous being an OSU fan. ALWAYS in the mix (which is a blessing we as fans likely take for granted), but rarely taking home the big prize (given the talent and the number of chances I mean, OSU has still outperformed everyone besides bama in that regard). Nature of the beast I guess. Good news is, OSU seems to step it up when they're completely counted out. The close calls in 02, the QB mess in 14, and the Michigan L in 24...hopefully we can add last night's conundrum to the list of things we thought would ruin a season.

I believe, but I'm extremely cautious about too much blind optimism.

You make a lot of good points. Didn't mean to come off as blindly optimistic. I’d say ‘24, ‘17, and ‘14 are the seasons where clear issues got resolved. Tressel had the most transformative teams, but the least talent.

Day’s made a lot of positive changes in his 8 years, but it’s closer to plugging holes in a boat than evolving and shaping his teams as he’d wish. I think that’s the biggest thing holding him back, along with 99% of coaches, especially in the NIL era.

Still, he’s a different type of coach than Tress or Urban, and bucked the trend of having to win an NC in the first 3 years. He’s more flexible and willing to make changes, but also makes more head scratching/face palming decisions as well. I also think he’ll be the first coach since Woody to win multiple NCs. Feels dumb as hell typing that out after last night, but I’ve been thinking it since ‘24 with the way he’s handled play calling, hires, and the portal. Hopefully I’m right.

I think @inliner311 is right, but that’s not a dig against Sayin. He supplements weaker arm with great accuracy and efficiency. If TSC or Stroud were QB, we’d be seeing a lot more long balls to JJ go for TDs.

You could make the same claim with Howard and he won an NC. Just a different type of QB.

Woke up and it still felt like a bad dream. “That really happened?”

I’m better about handling losses now but that was disgusting. They were cluess the last hour and a half of real time. Down to Day’s ineptitude under 2 minutes.

The rewatch will be ugly on all sides. I’d be interested in the play chart of what happened and what went wrong but the short version is “everything.”

No margin for error the rest of the year thanks to this choke.

Technically they can lose another game. But I feel like a loss to Indiana creates a domino effect where they lose at least 1 more if not 2 more.

This very well could be Day's full conversion into James Franklin moments. A pretty close mirror to Ped States 2nd half gag job against us in 2017.

Day isn't the type to write the ship on his own. He needs a push. I doubt the team this year is gonna pull what they did after scUM on 24. I also don't think Smith or Patricia are gonna step up and give him a coming to Jesus moment. This season completely teeters on that Indiana game. A loss there and kiss they playoffs goodbye, they are absolutely losing at least 1 more at that point.
