He chose to be aggressive when he was up 17. That's the time to squeeze the opponent and drain the clock. He didn't even need points. He had plenty. But he needed to shorten the game and put pressure on Texas. That pressure doesn't only exist on the field of play. It also exists in the mind of the opposing coach. Sark was already in desperation mode by then, so kicking the ball back after only one minute gave Sark life. Suddenly the Horns on the field had life again, and they took advantage. And then, after the TD, Day punted it right back to them AGAIN. He didn't even learn the lesson when it was being given to him in real time. Where is the guy on the staff who says, "Hey coach, we're up 20 points. It's the 4th quarter. We need to bleed the clock."?

It's mind boggling.

Guys, there were enough failures to go around. We need to stop pretending like we can pin this on one person. Sayin missed a walk in TD in the 2nd half.....overthrew him by a lot. But he also played pretty great. Jeremiah dropped a couple passes that he usually would have caught. But obviously he went beast mode and is still an alien. We went conservative too early. The DLine was getting pushed around. The kicker missed what would've iced the game....but he nailed 3 before that, including a 48 yarder.

It makes us feel better if all of the problems are because of one thing, because then we can just change that one thing and everything is perfect. That's not how it works. We went to the wire with a really good team at their place and came up a point short in week 2. We've lost to much worse teams than #4 Texas @ Texas and won championships in that same season.

You're right, we fucked a lot things up last night, let's not be too selective. Too many things gone wrong to win on the road against a really good team. And still only lost by a point. That's the real miracle.

My only thing is that I don't know how good Texas actually is. They have some amazing individual players, no disputing that. But I'm very concerned about our front 7 on defense and I think Patricia is going to have to really think hard on how to make up some talent gaps there against better teams like Texas, or we're going to get beat the hell up on the trenches...which is kinda important in football. And I'm just being blunt here, it's going to be a LONG season in the B1G if we don't improve on the defensive front 7 fast. There are plenty of OLs as good or better in the B1G this year, and we can't see what we saw last night and reach the conference championship game, and probably not the playoffs if we don't get that in order.

Scheme sure as hell seemed to have a big role in that. Let's never see dropping 8 and 3 DL half ass rushing a QB again unless we're up by 40+ points.

THIS! Outside of Kenyatta the DL especially the DTs were non existent

They didn't have to lose the game in order to defeat Texas in a potential rematch. All they needed to do was take the air out of the ball, run the clock, and play with a defense that had more than two minutes of clock time on the sideline.

8 year old kids playing Madden online know enough to burn the clock when they're up 20 points in the 4th Quarter. How the fuck doesn't Ryan Day know this?

Pass protection was not the worst but not great either, that needs to keep getting better. I think a lot of people were expecting a Miami game style OL breakdown.

I think the 2nd half lack of execution was largely the result of a complacency and a cruise control attitude being installed by the coaches in the locker room at the half. They didn't even attempt to make an adjustment to a criminal level.

Yeah I totally agree. Once you sort of dial it back to level 2 it’s not easy to dial it back to level 10. We blew it in quarter 3 to send the fans home. Had we gone up 34-3 after two touchdowns in the 3rd instead of a field we achieve that.

The defense will be fine. We won’t play another offense like that all year until we play Texas again. I like Indiana and Oregons offense but I think Texas skill is better than theirs.

The concern that’s underrated was the over reliance on Jeremiah. He can’t be the only player who shows up in big games. The plan seemed to force the ball to JJ and while it’s important to get him his touches I think it has to be within the natural flow of the game with a few called shots here and there when it makes sense.

Finally, Julian basically was a 50% passer. No clue what happened but had I seen his stat line I would’ve guessed we lost. I would’ve guessed he was throwing wildly because we had to. That wasn’t the case in this game so what the hell happened? I do know that Texas crowd was maybe the loudest I’d heard through a TV from an opposing fan base. Was he rattled a bit? Sure seemed like it.

This will help the good guys. When we roll into Indiana we will have played vs a like compared team. They will have Nebraska as their toughest game. Throw in likely being bet against and having revenge on our minds I like our chances.

Still sucks we lost but even though we did. We really didn’t play that well, especially on offense.
