Game Thread tOSU at Purdue, Noon ET Nov 12, BTN

Miserable game to watch. Down 10-0 early, 7 possessions in the first half, only 1 of which went for more than 3 plays. It was rather windy, which made the long throws tough.

Like most of you, I'm looking forward to having a new offensive system for 2012. Too much Dave, wildcat, and QB draws. But there were some plays worth commenting on.

With about 4 or 5 minutes left, Miller was in the shotgun, faked to Boom running right, rolled left and hit a wide open Spencer on a crossing route for a gain of 12 yard to the 30 yard line. Misdirection, an easy throw, a key first down. It's the kind of play that some teams run several times a game, and it's a novelty when we see it in 2011.

The go routes were overthrown with the wind behind him, but what's wrong with a play call where the WR gets 2 or 3 yards past a DB, especially on third and 17? The WRs were getting separation, but the accuracy wasn't there and sometimes the timing was an issue. Of course, that's the aspect of whether an offense is coordinated.

In the OT, I think the second play was actually the throwback TE screen that went for a TD against Nebraska, which we've been waiting to see again, but Purdue had it sniffed out.

It was a bad tackling day for the defense. I'm wondering if the tOSU defense has trouble against misdirection and screens because they don't often see those plays executed well in practice.

It would also be nice to get a break on a bounce of the ball at Purdue. They put it on the ground three times, and got them all back, a couple of times where it likely would have set up tOSU for easy points. And it would also would have been nice if a couple of balls that were thrown right at tOSU DBs had been held onto, but that's been a bad theme this season.

Best called play of the game imo. There is absolutely no reason why we can't run more of these kinds of plays. There is no reason why we can't call a screen when we know the Defense is sending everyone but the kitchen sink. There is no reason why we can't run a QB roll out and hit the Fullback or TE in the flat. There is absolutely no reason why we can't run a slant pattern or a bubble screen or a shovel pass.

It's just absolutely mindboggling to me...

I hate to lose, but watching our spoiled ass fan base meltdown is always a [censored]ing glorious thing to watch.

I will speak for some of those who your comment targets. I don't mind losing to a team of equal or greater talent. In that case, you just tip your hat and congratulate the other guys for being better.

On Saturday we lost to an inferior team. Sometimes you lose in that situation because you turn the ball over (see 2 years ago @ Purdue), but we lost this past Saturday because the coaching staff was afraid to win.

We put our defense on the field right away for too long with 3 straight 3 and outs. In some past years, we had a defense that you could do that to. This group is good, but not that good. They need the offense to get a few first downs every now and then and maintain possessions.

They put Braxton in the situation where he has to make a play, and the kid does it! But they won't let him do it to get a lead, only to come from behind.

Still, if you can execute an xp, then all of the fundamental philosophical screw ups are moot. But we can't get that done. You punch a jumper in the gut, and they tend to not be able to jump up sufficiently to block a kick.

So, what you have here is a team who needed to beat an inferior Purdue team to be in a situation where they had a chance to play for the B1G championship, but the coaches CHOSE to play the game in such a way as to lose it.

I understand that they won several games in a row doing what they did. But you have to understand that opponents are looking at what you are doing. They are in your mind. When you are that predictable, you become easy to defend, even for an inferior team.

Thinking you can keep having success with no variation - from what you have been doing - is an arrogant and foolish stance to take. And what you get is a loss to a Purdue team that deserved to win, but only because our coaching staff can't go outside of a predictable philosophical box they choose to put themselves in. And that is frustrating. Reasonably so.
