Game Thread tOSU at Penn State, Sat. Nov. 2, 12pm ET, FOX

I keep thinking about the Packers version of Brett Favre. He was often called a “gunslinger” because he had no pause and innately felt like he could thread any needle and make any play. To Green Bay’s benefit, he often did.

The downside to Brett (back then, he e learned about a litany of downsides at the end and after his career) was that if he had a game where his timing was off a beat, he’d throw 5 picks.

Will Howard is Trent Dilfer, not Brett Favre, in that he seems (to me) to be the efficient, mistake free, game manager type. Isn’t going to wow you, but won’t lose you games. The problem, again as I see it, is that behind Dr. Dilfer (Jekyll), is Mr. Hyde (the reckless Favre, just without the swagger and arm cannon). WH makes some almost arrogant throws, but doesn’t (again, imho) have the tools or vision to do that.

Just don’t lose the f’n game. That’s what I want to say to him. JS4, EE2, TH32, QJ1 — they and more are going to make you look better than you are. Be smart, we don’t need you to be a hero. You’re outclassed on that front by our embarrassment of talent riches.

Not at all bagging on Howard, he’s all we need to win every single game. As long as he embraces his role in that process.
