Game Thread tOSU at Penn State - Oct 27th, 5:30 ET, ESPN

Even with the departures, Penn State is a more talented football team at nearly all positions (excepting perhaps defensive line) than Purdue. And we're playing them at their home. Doesn't lead me to be sanguine at all.

So was Sparty

So was Nebraska

Honestly so was UCF as well.

More and more it's not about the perceived talent level but how well they use that talent on the field. Right now Bulbus O'Baloneystone is getting the absolute maximum out of a former walkon and a group of young players and never-weres.

He's going to throw the ball in the flats and on the outs all game long.

This is the one I had marked as a loss earlier in the season. Now, I don't feel much better.

  • Night game, on the road, in one of the most hostile stadiums for opposing fans and teams
  • This is their bowl game, the way Mich1gAAn is ours. They're bringing in 100 recruits for it.
  • They are playing really really well- veteran leadership and the "no one believes in us" factor starting to come together.
That being said- their offense matches up with our D better than we did against Purdue and Indiana.

Does ESPN usually have 5:30pm games? Not that it is really important, but why would this game be at such a weird time? It's a great time for a home game though. I wish Ohio State had some 5:30pm home games. Just seems weird. Gives ESPN a two hour gap between the noon game and this game.

I like this match-up for our defense much better as well. Penn State won't spread us out, it will be much more Michigan State oriented. I still have nightmares remembering Penn State going to their wild-cat formation as well, which I don't recall seeing PSU use this year.

I think our DL will be allowed to play more aggressively which is obviously a great thing.

Agree. I expect a similar game to Sparty & expect the Buckeyes to come away with the W.

I don't think PSU is going to need to employ any type of gimmick defense against OSU to be effective. Their front 7 is the best in the B1G and every time I have seen them play they have been able to get good pressure rushing just 4. LJ Sr. is a douche bag but he has way of getting maximum results from no name DL recruits. And when they bring the LB's on the blitz it's been very effective. I thought Roof would be a step backwards but you can argue that PSU D 2011 < 2012.

On offense no one has been able to figure out what they are doing because I imagine they are doing a good job of mixing things up with down and distance. As said above McMoxy seems to be making good decisions this year. But no one is pressuring him. Their OL is very underrated for a crew that returned one starter. They were driving Iowa's DL's 10 yards down field on some of those running plays on the edge. They have a kid that has no business playing in the B1G at RB (Zwinak) busting runs because the holes are huge.

Our guys are gonna need to bring it this week to stay undefeated and they may need a few bounces to go their way including a pick or two. I worry about the LB's vs TE's. If we go nickle we have more speed but the tackling is still very poor.
