Game Thread tOSU at Illinois, Sat Oct 2, Noon ET, BTN

To be clear, had no problem with the way Tress managed the game today. My comment was more toward the perception of the often clueless voters who of neccesity vote without seeing the games and who rely on press and talking heads to tell them what to think.

Just got home from the game.

It was very windy. That is why some of the punts were short. On the other hand, I was very surprised JT didnt opt to try a long FG when they had the ball on the Illini 38. It would have been a 55 yard FG with the wind at their back. I think they could of made it, yet they opted to punt and got tagged for 5 men in the backfield.

When TP went down I immediately knew he was hurt. That play took place right in front of my seats. When he was running and right before he went down, you could tell something went wrong. His leg straightened out then he just sorta dove. A very scary site and I had horrible thoughts running through my head. When we saw him running back out of the locker room, OSU fans went crazy. I am sure this is obvious, but he means SO much to this team. I hope he is ok, and this is not a lingering problem. Has there been an official announcement on his condition?

What was with the line play today? Both DL and OL seemed to be struggling.

TP needs to stop staring down wide receivers. He locks on and never looks away.

The play where they used play action and threw it to Dane in the endzone was setup beautifully. I saw it mature and you knew exactly where he was going and that Dane would be open. Its a shame TP did not get the right touch on that ball, it was a great play call.

Hopefully all the issues today can be chalked up to this being the teams first road game of the year. A win is a win.

I wish coach would open it up more. I could see why he bottled it up in the third qtr waiting for the windin the 4th - especially with an injured TP. None of that conflicts with how I think the voters might rank/view you if you have more close games against teams that are not highly regarded.

In the current BCS system image can become reality with voter perception if you come in third by a thousanth of a point.

Disagree here. The DL was pressuring Scheelhaase all game and was blowing up their running game almost all day. As for the OL, I think the holes where there, the backs were just missing them. Saine's carries need to be lessened. Jordan Hall and Berry should be getting serious looks. I know all about JT's loyalty to upperclassmen, sometimes to a fault, but you need to put your playmakers on the field. That is not Boom or Saine running the ball. Boom is an effective back to grind down the clock, but he's not a threat to break one. When Saine gets the ball on the ground, all I see is Lydell Ross. He's a tremendously effective receiver, but a liability as a runner IMO.

I doubt if JT was even thinking about the NC he was probably remembering Purdue last year ...We are always get a teams best shot ...and we can't be emotionally charged every game..save the extra emotion for Iowa Wisc eic
Agreed. Like I said, the difference between Purdue last year and today was "Tresselball"...it ain't pretty, but it has it's advantages.

I'm not sure I agree with taking even more from Saine. He only got 8 carries of 42 and most of those came when we were repeatedly running up the middle. He only got like 2 carries in like 20 when we started gaining yards of tackle. Which is his best types of runs anyways. He messed up trying to stop instead of taking the 3 yards that were there though.

That's his issue. Take away the Marshall game, and he's been a non-factor. He's a straight-line runner, just not effective in this type of offense. Hall, on the other hand, has that "wiggle" you need to be a breakaway threat. Multiple times this year, I've been left shaking my head after a Saine carry. I can't ever recall feeling that way about Hall.

First impressions.
Bauserman can't be the answer at QB when TP goes out. We need an answer here.

In the second quarter our defense had them figured out and it would have taken a major breakdown for Illinois to score a TD. Their pass game sucks.

Saine has lost what he had in reading lanes. He's struggling.
I'd rather see Hall or Berry in there to run the ball.

The receivers didn't help TP today, particularly Posey. Missing Stoney hurt here also. Still looking for the third receiver to step up.

TP's interception was ugly. TWash had double covered and he still tried to force it in there after he double clutched the throw.

Why did the run game all of a sudden come to life with Boom in there?
What changed besides Boom ?

Illinois kicking game will help them get a winning record this year.

The run game came alive because we started running off tackle versus trying to take it between the guards every play. Yes that is his problem but the greater issue was most of his carries came on the run up the gut for 2 or 3 type which Boom is better at and even he wasn't getting much. I want to see us give Saine more off tackle runs which he excels at before I give up on him.

Agreed and I think we all knew that going in.

Scheelhaase was under a lot of pressure all day, he's young and I think he'll be a reasoon for an upset or two by the Illini this year.

I don't think that's ever been a strength of his.

I think their D was just getting worn down. That is Boom's strength.

Illinois kicking game will help them get a winning record this year.
Agreed, I think this is the first time I've been envious of an opposing team's punter. He's a good one.

Well, it sounds like Pryor was hurt more than I originally thought.

"The worst thing was when I came back and the guys thought I was all right and they were saying, 'Come on Terrelle, lead us,' " Pryor said. "There was no way I could do anything but hand the ball off and maybe get a couple passes."

"I was in full stride and all of a sudden I felt and heard something pop and I was like 'What's going on?' " Pryor said. "It was probably the worst pain I had in a while."

Explains a lot of the playcalling. Of course it doesn't explain the myriad of missed blocks by the oline. They got better later in the game (except for that 4th down where the lineman completely missed the guy that almost stopped the conversion), but for the first 3 quarters I saw multiple olinemen looking around as a guy went by them or simply wiffed on blocks. It was pretty bad, especially blitz pickup.
