I think OSU is still fine for CFP as long as we have zero losses in our “L” column.
I think people are underestimating how awful of a year Disney/ESPN are having. Their ratings are in the toilet and tOSU brings the ruckus on viewership. It’s the one year outside of 2014 (inaugural CFP) where tOSU is absolutely in a pole position based on factors other than football. So everyone should take a deep breath there.
I said it before, but the worst thing the Big 10 did was continue to box itself into corners no one was asking them too. This 6 game requirement in a pandemic was awful.....why? Just throw divisions out (like the ACC did) and do it based on CFP rankings. I’ve never seen leadership just continually shit in their own bed so frequently. That stipulation was as stupid as the day they set it forth as it is now. Almost as dumb as flat out cancelling the season rather than postponing, setting the restart back by at least 2 weeks.
Ultimately I feel for the kids. Depending on who has tested positive, under the Big 10’s threshold for returning, we could see quite a few “opt-outs”. No underclassmen, but any players that are entering draft next year, who either tested positive or feel the rest of season may not be worth the hurdles, are likely wrestling with that question. If for example Wyatt Davis has it (I have no idea if he does or not) is it really worth the next month essentially, where testing will likely increasingly come back positive....so ride this out? I’d argue no, but we will see.
The last thing I’d say is the CFP has openly stated the idea is on table to delay CFP several weeks if necessary. OSU missing CFP bc of Big 10’s incompetence would be a likely reason for CFP committee to delay the playoff. Whether OSU plays in Big 10 championship, or is just able to add a win or two to the W column would be more than enough.
As long as there is a CFP for this season, I believe OSU will be in.
