fairly poor? no. they've shot right at the national average for free throw percentage pretty much every year. before you say that the national average is poor for a high major team that is regularly competing for titles, then you may want to look at the free throw percentages of the titleists over the last decade. there is little correlation. furthermore, you need only one hand to count ohio state's losses attributable to free throw shooting over the last five or so years.
also, free throw shooting is worked on during the off-season and outside of practice. the burden is on the players. there isn't close to enough time for coaches to use team time for free throw shooting from october through march. for the most part, good free throw shooters are determined before stepping foot onto campus. most players progress predictably throughout their college careers, whether they come in shooting 60%, 70%, or 80%.
