Game Thread Tostitos Fiesta Bowl: Ohio State 34, Notre Dame 20 (final)

The BCS pairings fell exactly how most analysts felt they would. USC and Texas will meet in the Rose Bowl for the national championship game. The Fiesta Bowl then slotted Notre Dame (9-2), which got an automatic berth by finishing 12th or better in the standings. (ND ended up sixth, while fifth-place Oregon was left out of the BCS.)

So we have 9 wins. That means if we finished in the top 12 in the BCS, we would have gotten an automatic bid? Well what were we all worried about then?*sarcasm font*

Certainly $$$ is one of the big, if not biggest issues. But there are others that are certainly as compelling.

First and foremost, alumni support. The $hit really hit the fan when it was broken that our AD was talking with the Big Ten. We like playing the national schedule, and want to maintain the "identity" that ND has via independence.

Also, Big Ten membership isn't just athletic, it also requires academic membership in the CIC (Committee on Institutional Cooperation), which will no doubt enhance ND's graduate status, but many fear will harm our undergraduate programs.

Understood, but it really kills your complaint that the Big Ten get an annual spot. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

Where did you get this? This is not correct. Breaking the top 12 ranking made ND eligible, but did not trigger an automatic invite.

Right but what I am saying is........you're 6th in the BCS. Oregon is 5. I mean what is the point of rankings at all, if they dont follow the rankings. Oregon is ranked higher, Oregon goes. The bowls dont even follow the rankings. BCS = Crap.

I will be up front with you. I am a huge Ohio State fan of course. One of the big requirements of an Ohio State fan is to hate Michigan. While I do hate Michigan, I hate nobody more than ND. It really must be nice to automatically be great without having to earn it.

This by no means is attacking you, or any ND fan/member of this board, I am speaking of the college itself.

Oh and let me say that I am so happy that we're playing ND in the Fiesta, and I hope we win by 200 points

Where is Purdue in 2K? I'll be the first to admit that the Big Ten's champions have been among the most deserving, but that's not always the case......and when coupled with some of the "champions" the other BCS conferences have offered, there really is little room to argue about "deserve" and the BCS.

Fiesta Bowl: Possible New Attendance Record?

With all the hype going into this game and all. And with so many plane tickets already sold out. Is there a chance that the old attendance record of 80,470 that was at the 1999 Fiesta Bowl might be broken this year. Now remember the attendance for the 2003 National Championship Game between Miami and OSU was only [SIZE=-1]77,502.

So is there a chance that a new record might be set?

My complaint was meant to be construed in terms of "deserve"....as in ND getting the invite over the ducks. Sure we could join the big 10 and have a chance at going via automatic invite. We could also join the big east and have the same opporutnity.

While winning the big ten would certainly be more challenging, it would get us the same BCS spot. In the words of one William Munny "....deserve has got nothin to do with it....."

It would get you the same BCS spot, right........but I think you'd be more deserving of it, dont you? Winnin the big 10 to get that spot is definitely no cakewalk. ND usually plays a pretty tough schedule, and I will admit to that, but there would be MUCH more challenge to come in and win the big 10 to get that bid, hence more deserving.

Stop right there. There are 8 BCS spots right? Why shouldn't both ND & Oregon go?

I'm glad we're playing OSU as well. Not because I hate you, but because IMO, OSU is the best possible opponent available.....and if Weis is going to be truly successful, he needs to first destroy the mentality of "dimished expectations" that has polluted our program via the Davieham era.

No more worrying that the game is on the road.........or at night.......or that the stars are aligned in a certain way. We need to know that we can take on and play with the best. OSU offers us that, whereas Oregon didn't.

PSU, Miami sure struggled a lot more once they joined a real conference.

clashmore, you didn't address any of my points when you asked us to show you evidence. Why was ND never questioned in terms of deserving the at-large bid? I'm not here to argue OSU vs. ND, I'm merely stating you were a lock despite an imperfect season. Oregon vs. OSU were the only teams that could be questioned.

um, if we're going on rankings, OSU & Oregon would go as atlarge teams.
