Top Coaches in College Football (Merged All)

So the guy with the most talent must be the top coach.

Brilliant analysis.

Mandel should have stuck to sticking condoms on his head.

I don't have a problem with it. Carroll is the guy who brought all of them there, and I think he's done a great job keeping USC always a top team.

With that said, I think the Top 3 are pretty solid, and honestly, you could probably put those 3 in any order and have a good arguement.

Best coach list? Yah, or most popular based on VERY recent success. Mack Brown is not by any stretch a top 10 coach. Neither is Rodreguiez, and I won't even dignify the others who had a good year and wound up on that list. At least they didn't put up Weis or Les Miles.

1 Jim Tressel
2 Tommy Tuberville
3 Pete Carrol
4 Steve Spurrier
5 Urban Meyer
6 Jim Leavitt
7 Larry Blakeney
8 Karl Dorrell
9 Bobby Johnson
10 Chris Petersen

I might just get to add Dantonio to that list pretty soon
Dantonio doesn't get to be on the list until he can get MSU to actually win the games they're supposed to win, and pull off a win against Michigan more than once a decade.

IMO, Paul Johnson belongs somewhere on every top-10 list of coaches. Winning at the service academies is damn near impossible.

Can't consider Dantonio because he hasn't proved anything. I only said that I expect to be putting him up there in a couple years. He just shows so many of Tressel's characteristics. Although he let the Northwestern game get out of hand.

What is the argument against Tuberville? I overlooked Johnson, I should have him in there at, at least 10.

Dorrell is going to put UCLA back on track. And even as I write this I realize that he lost to Weis last week.

Bob Stoops star has fallen a bit.
Mack is a great recruiter. Just a good coach.
Meyer......Nice combo of recruiter and very good coach.
Carrol.......Very good recruiter and fine defensive coach. How would he do in another big conference....Big Ten...Sec? Best coach in the game?
How good is Houston Knutt? Very under rated. Maybe even top five good?

Spurrier won the ACC at Duke. Duke's gridiron achievements pre and post-Spurrier are well known. Ignoring his UF accomplishments, or his turning South Carolina into a conference contender, his Duke Championship alone should put him on the list.

My top 5 would go:

1. Spurrier
2. Meyer(gotta' give it to him after the NC game)
3. Tressel(will pass Meyer with an NC this year)
4. Carroll
5. Stoops(meh, he chokes too often but still does a solid job)

Tough to leave off Erickson and Leavitt. Tuberville has also done a fantastic job despite fairly low-rated recruiting classes. Stoops is hard to figure out. On one hand, he has an NC and two NC game appearances. On the other, he chokes and he chokes badly(KSU in '03, USC in '04, BSU in '06, and CU this year). Plus, he has some shady off the field issues with his team every year. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

I dont know if I would put Meyer ahead of Tressel or Carroll just yet. I dont think he is so far behind, but he has 1 NC and 1 other BCS bowl game appearance. Tressel has 1 NC, 2 NCG appearances, 4 BCS bowl appearances, and 4 I-AA championships. Carroll has taken USC to 5 straight BCS bowl appearances in 6 years, winning 4 and going to 3 straight NCG, winning 2. I have a lot of respect for Meyer, but dont think that he has proven enough to be ranked ahead of Tressel or Carroll just yet.

I am biased, but I still think that you need more than two years to evaluate Urban's place. Look at Richt. Not quite so brilliant now after a fast start. Still a great guy, mind you, but not a great coach a-la Tressel and Spurrier.

Good point, and Richt's resume was also enhanced based on how his prior club performed after his departure to Athens.
