Top Coaches in College Football (Merged All)

Urban isn't on my list solely for the NC game. He's won at BGSU, only lost 2 games at Utah including developing the #1 pick and finishing #4 in the polls, and took back the Swamp. Meyer is a winner and has done a solid job this year despite 2 losses. I wouldn't take him over Tressel but looking at it objectively, I'd give Meyer just a slight edge right now.

You know why I refuse to put Stoops in my top 10. During the Texas game a couple weeks ago they were up by 7 with 13 seconds left in the game. Instead of taking a knee, Stoops calls in the FG unit. Now as disgusted as I was, I didn't consider what might have happened if he missed until it actually happened. So texas got the ball back with time to run another play and possibly tie the game. And the announcers didn't say a word about Stoops trying to pad the score.

Bob Stoops star has fallen a bit.
Mack is a great recruiter. Just a good coach.
Meyer......Nice combo of recruiter and very good coach.
Carrol.......Very good recruiter and fine defensive coach. How would he do in another big conference....Big Ten...Sec? Best coach in the game?
How good is Houston Knutt? Very under rated. Maybe even top five good?
I can only assume that you had the sarcasm font on with Houston Nutt. If not, let me say as a person living in Arkansas, you have no idea what you are talking about. He is a decent recruiter, a very lousy offensive mind, and a poor game day coach.

Who is the best Div. 1A football coach, other than Jim Tressel?

I'm gonna have to go with Pete Carroll. I really wanted to pick someone else, but i just can't argue with the sustained success he's governed over the past several years. Granted, I don't think that the Pac 10 is as difficult a conference to win as the other BCS members (excluding ACC). The other candidates I thought of fell into two categories: ones who had the fortune of coaching special talent for one year (Mack Brown, Urban Meyer), and ones who manage to overachieve, but never break through (Frank Beamer).
Carroll is the beneficiary of having a local recruiting hotbed and having a program with a high national profile. He arguably gets the best talent in college football, and he reciprocates by having the best winning percentage in the country and producing tons of NFL caliber players. I personally believe that Tressel does a better job of developing players, but Carroll certainly does not waste the riches he has at his disposal. He also seems like a good guy who cares about his players and commands their respect. And he was an assistant under Earle Bruce.
