Who is the best Div. 1A football coach, other than Jim Tressel?
I'm gonna have to go with Pete Carroll. I really wanted to pick someone else, but i just can't argue with the sustained success he's governed over the past several years. Granted, I don't think that the Pac 10 is as difficult a conference to win as the other BCS members (excluding ACC). The other candidates I thought of fell into two categories: ones who had the fortune of coaching special talent for one year (Mack Brown, Urban Meyer), and ones who manage to overachieve, but never break through (Frank Beamer).
Carroll is the beneficiary of having a local recruiting hotbed and having a program with a high national profile. He arguably gets the best talent in college football, and he reciprocates by having the best winning percentage in the country and producing tons of NFL caliber players. I personally believe that Tressel does a better job of developing players, but Carroll certainly does not waste the riches he has at his disposal. He also seems like a good guy who cares about his players and commands their respect. And he was an assistant under Earle Bruce.
