Top Coaches in College Football (Merged All)

Posted my reply ... should be somewhere in the #110s-#120s if it's approved.

Here's the C&P:

Holy heck, this has to be the most absurd list ever! Here's my stab:

#1. Pete Carroll - This is a rout. He took a storied program knee deep in mediocrity and turned it around into a winner. All-Americas are everywhere on the roster and the coaching is top notch, as USC is piling up wins and sending their kids to the NFL. Three Heisman trophies, two National Titles (get over it LSU fans), a runner-up to Texas in another appearance, and a 4-1 mark in BCS bowls over the last five years.

#2. Urban Meyer - Cemented his reputation with the National Championship. Won at Bowling Green, took Utah to a BCS game, and won a National Championship, all in the span of just the past six/seven years.

#3. Jim Tressel - Was a legend at YSU, going to six national title games and winning four, back in the 90s against top opponents before Boise, Marshall, etc all made the jump to D1A. Took a program that John Cooper had lost control of and won a national title in his second year. Has four 10 win seasons in the last five years, appeared in two championship games, won one, is 3-1 in BCS games overall, and 5-1 for his career vs Michigan. OSU is #1 in NFL draft production since his arrival in 2001, and #1 in 1st round NFL picks over the past four years.

#4. Mack Brown - Won at North Carolina and has built a machine and model of consistency at Texas. Has a National Title in the trophy case, is #1 in wins for this decade, and has turned the tide back versus an overachieving Oklahoma program that has been hamstrung by off-field problems and inept QB play.

#5. Mark Richt - #5 overall in wins this decade, four 10 win seasons in five years, and has Georgia producing NFL draft picks left and right. His move from Tallahassee to Athens also coincides with Georgia becoming a force that nobody wants to play come bowl season, while Florida State has been in the toilet with forgettable QB play. The timing of switch in fortunes for the 'Noles and the 'Dawgs isn't a coincidence.

Honorable mentions: Tommy Tuberville, Tom O'Brien, Gary Patterson, Paul Johnson

Overheard in the halls at SI:

Hey, when are you going to write another story about crazy fans?

I don't know. The serious fans don't really pay attention to us anymore. We haven't been deluged by e-mails from OSU fans since I don't even remember when.

Hmmm... Maybe I should have someone do another "ranking" story. Like maybe the top-5 stadiums - and we could leave off Ohio Stadium.

No, no, that's crazy. Then we'd lose them for good. How about we do the top-5 coaches and include Lloyd Carr?

You're calling ME crazy? Lloyd called and said he wants his medication back. No, do the top-5 coaches (walking away) ...but don't include Carr. Just leave somebody obvious off.

You mean like Jim Tressel??

(Still walking away) What? I didn't hear you! I gotta go!

What's that? Go with it? You got it!

I think the entire intent of this article is to enrage the Buckeye fans.
The intent of the entire article was to generate views and responses. Memo to offended Buckeye fans - irate viewers with angry responses still create advertising revenues for SI. If you don't like their site, don't go there, even to complain - for every time you hit their link you are putting money in their pockets.

Best coach list? Yah, or most popular based on VERY recent success. Mack Brown is not by any stretch a top 10 coach. Neither is Rodreguiez, and I won't even dignify the others who had a good year and wound up on that list. At least they didn't put up Weis or Les Miles.

1 Jim Tressel
2 Tommy Tuberville
3 Pete Carrol
4 Steve Spurrier
5 Urban Meyer
6 Jim Leavitt
7 Larry Blakeney
8 Karl Dorrell
9 Bobby Johnson
10 Chris Petersen

I might just get to add Dantonio to that list pretty soon

Karl Dorrell? Is that a joke? He shouldn't even sniff the top 20.

Peterson capitalized on what Hawkins built... as well as a mediocre schedule. Great bowl game, but not enough to be top-10.
Dantonio has a lot to prove yet, but the potential is there.
Jim Grobe has to be in the mix.
