Joaquin After Dentist? - Top 10 Disastrous Letterman Interviews - TIME

    1. Joaquin After Dentist?

When Oscar-nominated actor-turned-rapper-turned-hobo Joaquin Phoenix stopped by CBS's Late Show with David Letterman on Feb. 11, America got a firsthand glimpse of the la-la land where Phoenix evidently now resides. Where to begin ? his lumberjack beard? His unwashed mane? The creepy, unnecessary shades? Or the catatonic, mumbling responses to admittedly ridiculous questions like, "How's that beard working out for ya?"

    2. Farrah Fawcett Just Can't Stop

Farrah Fawcett thought she'd never escape the shadow of Charlie's Angels. But this 1997 Letterman interview ? on the heels of her 50th birthday ? left her a bigger problem. Fawcett told a lot of stories. Long ones. Nonsensical ones. Creepy ones. Ones that didn't end. She goes on for nearly 20 minutes in not one, [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU92ntvzYgA&"]not two[/ame], but [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auuZY2_Zs4g&"]three[/ame] clips now on YouTube. It's unclear exactly how much air was pumped into her head preinterview, but she seemed to be having a grand ole time.

    3. Is That Really the Little Girl from E.T.?

You know what's great? Seeing a guest embarrass Letterman instead of the other way around, which is exactly what Drew Barrymore did in 1995. That year on his birthday, she spontaneously jumped onto his desk and, with her back facing the audience, flashed her bazongas in his face.

    4. Twilight or Twilight Zone?

Twilight star Kristen Stewart's 15 minutes of fame might have already passed (until the next movie in the series, at least), but, oh, what a memorable 15 minutes they were. Less than a week before she would be photographed smoking drugs on her Los Angeles doorstep, Stewart dropped by Letterman's show for one last plug of her vegetarian-vampire flick. The result is equal parts hilarity and horror.

    5. Don't F___ with Madonna

It all started with Letterman's less-than-awesome introduction of the pop star before her 1994 appearance: "Our first guest tonight is one of the biggest stars in the world. In the past 10 years, she has sold over 80 million albums, starred in countless films and slept with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry." Burn! Even faithful sidekick Paul Shaffer couldn't help but object. "She's your guest!" he bellowed from off-camera. To which Letterman responded, "It's right there on her bio, for heaven's sake."

    6. Post-Slammer Paris Hilton

Fresh out of the slammer in 2007, Paris Hilton, a frequent Letterman guest, made a big mistake and returned to the show. Letterman began with some simple banter about which coast she likes better, East or West. Then he went in for the kill:

    7. Andy Kaufman Gets Slapped. Hard.

Real or elaborate put-on? It's hard to tell when Andy Kaufman ? comedian and performance artist ? is involved. In the early 1980s, Kaufman engaged in a series of absurdist exercises whereby he wrestled women and declared himself "Intergender Heavyweight Champion." Such bluster soon caught the attention of professional (male) wrestler Jerry Lawler, who challenged Kaufman to a match and proceeded to pile-drive him into the mat twice, thereby injuring his neck.

    8. Crispin Glover Goes Back to the Crazy

So normal ? square, even ? as Marty McFly's father in Back to the Future, Crispin Hellion Glover (apparently that's his real middle name) turned in a thoroughly bizarre and completely uncomfortable performance during this 1987 appearance on Letterman's show. Ostensibly there to promote his film River's Edge, Glover babbled haltingly and read random clips about himself from Los Angeles society pages, all while wearing hippie pants, an off-kilter wig and platform shoes.

    9. Kramer's Sorry Satellite Stunt

In retrospect, it's hard to believe that a character as lovably wacky as Seinfeld's Kramer could be played by angry Michael Richards. His public image imploded in 2006 after cameras caught the actor launching into a 3-min. tirade at an L.A. comedy club when an African-American man started heckling him. The rant, which included repeated use of the N word and a graphic reference to lynching, eventually managed to clear the entire club.

    10. Harvey Pekar Keeps It Real

A big hand for Harvey Pekar, the American Splendor comic writer who annoyed Letterman so much during his August 1988 appearance that he got himself banned for life. (Somehow, he's returned twice since.) At one point during the show, Letterman interrupted Pekar's rant against General Electric ? the corporate parent of NBC, which then owned Late Night ? and said to bandleader Paul Shaffer, "I'm just praying for a terrorist."

Letterman > Leno because he doesn't just fellate his guests. Tearing into Hilton was great. He had that douchebag from one of those MTV shows thats all over the tabloids with his horsefaced girlfriend and absolutely shredded him a few months back. They cut to his girlfriend in the back because he was boring Dave and she said "Spencer's the man" to which Dave replied "For what?" while the idiot was sitting right next to him. It was great.

*edit: looked it up, his name is Spencer Pratt. Look it up on youtube, it's worth it. (Can't post youtube clips from work).

    "Here's what wouldn't shock me...2 beers" :slappy:

While Dave was funny it sucks that I now know who that douchebag Pratt is. Thanks. :roll1:
