The interest in Mentor defensive end Tom Strobel from major college football programs is definitely heating up.
Strobel, who just completed his junior season as an all-district performer and a third-team All-Ohioan, can't receive official scholarship offers until this summer. However, several schools have contacted Cardinals coach Steve Trivisonno and informed him when the time comes, the 6-foot-6, 240-pound senior-to-be will be a player who will be offered a chance to play at some of the top programs in the country.
So far, Trivisonno confirmed the list of schools potentially interested in offering Strobel a scholarship include Stanford, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Wisconsin.
"Michigan State told me it took them three plays watching Tom on tape to realize they wanted him," Trivisonno said. "Stanford said it took about eight plays, and they turned off the film because they saw enough to know he was a guy they wanted."
In 8 1/2 regular-season games last year, Strobel had 32 tackles, five tackles for loss, 30 QB pressures, two sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
