Izzo is in a tough spot because he is being held to 2017 standards, when he allowed an assistant coach who punched a woman in the face, to continue coaching back in 2009.
Had Walton's incident happened last month, he'd have been suspended immediately. Period.
Izzo not only allowed him to continue coaching through the alleged assault, but then let him continue coaching after he plead down his charge.
I don't think Izzo should be forced out over that. I understand there were other incidents including Adreian Payne and Keith Appling, but it looks like Izzo followed protocol as a coach.
I guess, IMO, if you force Izzo out at MSU, do you then turn around and force Jimbo Fisher out at FSU over Jameis Winston? Do we look into all of the misconduct at Alabama and force Saban out? Do we start holding Urban Meyer accountable for the awful arrest record, including several domestic violence incidents at UF?
It's quite the rabbit hole....
And if we want to discuss conspiracies, I'd posit a few things.....
1. The Big 10 and ESPN's relationship has never fully recovered after ESPN made a mockery of Ohio State during the Tressel firing
2. The Big 10, influeneced by OSU, had significant reasons to diverge from ESPN when creating the Big 10 Network and then signing a massive deal with Fox Sports
3. Let's call Michigan State, the 5th, maybe 6th most important sports program in the Big 10 (1. OSU 2. UM 3. PSU 4. Wisconsin 5. MSU/Nebraska?)........Had this situation happened at, say, Tennessee or Florida, do you think ESPN would be in a multi-year legal battle over FOIA requests and actively appearing to want to force coaches out?
Cause I don't think that'd be happening, personally.
I'm all for great reporting, and have a lot of respect for Outside the Lines. I just think there are significant reasons why ESPN is willing to throw a guy like Tom Izzo under the bus, when they were significantly less hostile towards Hugh Freeze (who did far worse things, IMO). But Hugh was part of the "brotherhood". How much juice could ESPN milk out of all the sexual assault at Tennessee, going back to Peyton Manning? Think they'd touch that? I don't.
