Here's the thing to ask....

When Herman came to Houston, was the cupboard bare? Nope. That team had just won 7 games (ugly year, yes), but they won a bowl game too (in very entertaining fashion, I might add).

He's gonna have to really weigh his options here.....I wouldn't recommend that he take that job.

I would honestly stay put if I were Herman. Use the leverage to maybe move up to $4m at Houston. That UT pressure is real, ask Strong! They will love you in year 1 and that first press conference, and then almost wait for you to fail. If Herman goes to UT, the clock is ticking, and he'll(unfair or not) will be given 3(maybe 4) years to turn UT into a team that either/or wins the Big 12 AND gets in the CFP. That's a very difficult goal in such a short time. He'll be starting over, and playing tougher competition weekly and now he won't be able to sneak up and get recruits. He'll be expected to get 4 and 5stars in Texas, as opposed to getting 3stars and coaching them up and getting occasional 4 and 5stars from the Houston vicinity. Now he'll have to deal with not only the Big 12 TX colleges recruiting against him, but also OU and (fake)OSU, and also the schools from around the nation that cherry pick TX recruits. Yes, he'll get a bunch of money thrown at him from UT, but he could see the same fate as Strong if the program isn't turned around BIG TIME in 3yrs.

Unless USC/UCLA came open, I'm not sure there will be a more attractive job opening for a mid-major coach. Despite the texas craziness, the difficulty of winning there is noticeably lower than many places. It certainly beats LSU (unless Saban retires soon).

This.

That program even at 80% of it's potential beating on the B12 is a recipe for consistent CFP contention. Even better for them, their rivalry game is in early October. Tons of time for the loser to climb back up. Makes it almost a no lose situation a la Miami/FSU back in the day.
