Tom Herman (Former Head Coach FAU Owls)

“Let’s not go heaping too much praise on them just yet. They’re kind of like mushrooms; we like to keep them in the dark and feed them manure.” — Houston’s Tom Herman, following the “upset” win over Louisville and with the first scatological reference of the “he said it” era.

I wonder if Coach Herman is familiar with the unofficial motto of the Son Tay raiders:

Interesting that a key play came off an adjustment to bear cover-0 defense.
Seems that's going to become more and more popular against this style of offense?

VT has had the bear/double eagle defense in their scheme forever because they've played it against Georgia Tech -- take away the run and trust your superior athletes at CB to play man against teams that can't throw the ball. Since VT sprung it on Ohio State with success last season it's now going to see a resurgence. Not surprised Herman would scrimmage his own 1s for/against it since he knows other DCs will have to use Ohio State film to break down his offense. Houston will benefit from running it themselves since they're in a conference with SMU and Navy.

What surprised me a little was that apparently UL was running it, and I guess it had some success -- Herman states in the interview that a big play came from an adjustment to Bear. Seeing UL using it, the staff came up with a play the next time UL aligned that way and checked into that from the original call.

...

There are no sure things when it comes to drafting QBs or assistants becoming head coaches. If you'd asked me which assistant was the safest pick to win big as a first-time head coach, I'd have said Tom Herman. Houston was my pick to be the top Group of Five team in the preseason, and while I think QB Greg Ward Jr. is a dynamic talent, the biggest reason for the hunch was because of Herman. His pedigree as a creative offensive mind had been proven at several stops before he arrived at Ohio State, but it's been the past few seasons where Herman not only helped turn QB catastrophe into wizardry -- and a national title -- but also got a Ph.D in program management under Urban Meyer.

That was evident in Herman's first big win as a head coach at Houston this weekend when the Cougars went to Louisville and beat Bobby Petrino's team. The Cougars went 11-of-22 on third downs and ran off 92 plays. Better still, UH again has an opportunistic defense, which forced four turnovers and kept the Cards from having a play of 30 yards or longer.

Here's what I think mattered even more: a team with a rookie head coach and new staff won on the road despite big struggles in the red zone and having an 18-play drive that yielded no points. That's some soul-crushing stuff and usually leads to frustration and defeat, especially on the road and especially as an underdog. Herman's team, though, never buckled.

"It sounds cliche or like coach-speak, but we've been training for this moment for nine months, training them how to respond to adversity," Herman told FOX Sports late Saturday night.

Cont'd ...

I have gone from "Houston has a college football team?" to being a big fan since the Herman move.

For anyone who hasn't been watching, their total yards in three games have been: 621, 462, 689.

True, other than Louisville their competition has been very suspect. But he has the machine in gear and this week received a few votes in both polls.

If Strong doesn't pick it up in Austin Herman's time in Houston might be short. If he can make Houston look better than the Horns for the next couple years I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the call up.

Of course the buyout would be "chump change" compared to what they paid Louisville to get Strong:

"Herman must pay $2.25 million if leaves for another job before Feb. 28, 2018, according to details obtained Thursday by the Houston Chronicle through a Freedom of Information Act request."

"The University of Texas' new football coach, Charlie Strong, will be paid $5 million for the 2014 season and the university will pay Strong's $4.375 million buyout to Louisville,"

Really wish we had TH for another year or two. Can't imagine what the offense would be like this year had we still had him in C-Bus
