I also just thought of another silver lining … at least we don’t have to light a roster spot on fire for DGG’s high school friend now.

Giving 2+ mil right off the start to a HS RB is complete insanity (and desperation in Tennessee's case)

Tennessee is setting a not so good precedent for themselves here, all upper level recruits are going to demand this sort of treatment from them now going forward, and it's just not sustainable consistently enough to get them enough of those types of guys to be able to actually be a true contender.

Ohio State is in a nice position where they don't have to play that desperation game.

Even if we don't end up with a HS RB in this class it's really not a huge deal. Handful of guys on the roster who are Sophomores or Freshmen, it's not like some dire situation here where we have 4 guys and 3 are for sure gone after the season. Stud incoming in the 2028 class and we can and will use the portal to get someone capable if we had to. It's going to be seen by the outside definitely as bitterness when this is said but DGG was purely a luxury recruit for Ohio State.

I can see OSU stepping back and trying to flip Jayden Miles, and if that doesn't work, then reassessing the class at the end or towards the end of the HS season. OSU has 6 RBs on schollie, so RB isn't a NEED, but if/when he chooses Tenn on Wednesday, just expect a meltdown by a number of OSU fans, and Tenn fans wanting to rub it in our faces. But tbh, they are desperate. OSU in 2027 can still have a rotation of: Jackson, West, Bey/Rogers and be a top 5 RB room in the country. In 2028, OSU could have a rotation of: West, Bey, Rogers, Akih and be fine. And I'm not even including Lock finding a transfer in each of the following seasons.

I hope DGG chooses OSU, but in the end, the program will be fine with or without him. I can remember guys like Bijan Robinson, Richard Young, and CJ Baxter being big misses at RB in their time, yet OSU was fine. And they'll be fine in this case too

I agree 100% that not getting this guy won't make Tennessee a legit title contender and that OSU will be "fine" without him, but he absolutely could be the difference between winning or not winning a natty down the road for OSU. E.g., I know I'd have liked the odds of OSU not needing to sweat the kicking game against Georgia in the 2022 Peach Bowl if we'd been handing the ball to Bijan Robinson instead of Dallan Hayden. Just making a point: I still wouldn't overpay and once TN underperforms I wouldn't be surprised if we acquired him via the portal later anyway.

Our overall RB situation though is currently better than it was back then I'd say.

I've never gotten the "generational" talk some seem to tag DGG with. He's not even the #1 RB in his own class, or a top 5 player overall. I think to even be considered "generational" it starts with you being the #1 overall player in your own HS class.

Our overall RB situation though is currently better than it was back then I'd say.

The transfer portal has completely changed this situation. We could land a RB almost as talented as him on paper with a year or two of big time college experience. It’s a slight setback but very slight if we don’t land him.

I do think the risk we run with breaking the bank for 1 guy is that others will expect something similar…..especially our current guys if they have a very productive year for the Buckeyes. I’d rather break the bank to land a couple missing pieces

First, do we really want to walk down the “locker-room-chemistry-disrupting” road where unproven high schoolers are making significantly more than current starters on the roster? I personally do not.

Second, the Legend Bey situation highlighted pretty clearly that Tennessee also (illegally) throws money and benefits at the family of players in these recruitments, which is something Ohio State isn’t going to do.

I mean, can we take a moment to remember how insane the Legend Bey situation was from just a few months ago?

It's not "known known for sure" but we've seen how Tennessee will pretty much go over the top and do anything to get a single recruit they have zeroed in on. Desperate programs do desperate program things and there's no need for Ohio State to play that game.

My point was that Robinson won little at Tejas and OSU still won an NC with Henderson who arrived the year after him. And getting Robinson would mean OSU wouldn't have gotten Henderson.

QB is a dire need.
CB might be.
Trenches always define osu's championships or failures (and often from the Josh Fryar and Darryl Baldwin types).

Rb is too accessible of a position: it's the easiest with regard to scouting, acclimation and finding them.

DGG is special, and he deserves to earn. TN requires double the investment to be a consideration. The kid deserves to benefit from his talent and their desperation.

The next Judkins will cost what they offered DGG. There is also likely to be another competition for DGG after Heupel moves on, and at that point they can either offer a similar package with a more stable program, or he can prove to actually be Bijan 2.0 and be a more sound investment at that price point

Exactly, what Tennessee is doing in these situations goes far beyond just simply "outbidding". Ohio State would basically have to come close to probably tripling what was already a pretty good offer in terms of market value to be able to possibly win this one. That then sets a precedent for players already on the roster and future recruits we may go after.

DGG is not Derek Henry who a lot consider to be the greatest HS RB of all time. He's a good prospect but he's not so undisputed generational freak at the position.

Agree with the above. I'll opine that tOSU doesn't win in 2024 with only Trevion at RB, and NEEDED Quinshon as well. Two NFL future players at RB. Getting the tough yards etc. Maybe DGG is the 'missing' piece of the puzzle. Hard telling until you're in the middle of it. Also agree that tOSU has a good and deep RB room. Heck, our twos and threes could/would be starters at other D1 schools. And yeah, RB is the most easily replaced position on the field, so tOSU would most certainly find the next Quinshon in the portal. Go Bucks!

Concerning UT:

The market just told them that their product, head to head with OSU, has to pay a 100% premium to overcome it's deficiencies.

Swap places and just imagine we found that out at OSU (shudder).

How many victory laps are you taking when you know your program is so middle of the pack it would have to pay double to get elite players away from competitors? How could you ever hope to actually compete at the highest level under that kind of a handicap?
