Tim Beck (HC Coastal Carolina)

TOM HERMAN DEFENDS TIM BECK HIRE, SAYS HE DIDN'T CALL PLAYS AND URBAN MEYER ENDORSED HIM

Ohio State fans celebrated Monday when co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Beck left to coordinate Tom Herman's Texas offense.

While it's a logical leap the move stems as fallout from Clemson's 31-0 hiding of Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, Beck-to-Texas was reportedly known to the staff three weeks prior.

It's an interesting conundrum for Buckeye fans. Herman is seen as an offensive genius, whereas Beck is seen as the opposite of that.

Wednesday night, Herman tweeted the header graphic above, touting the statistical success of Ohio State's offense in the past two years.

Well, all I can add is....

I think it is funny, out of one side of his bum he posts Stats attributed to Beck and then out of the other side of his bum he tries to diminish Becks role in the offense lol. Odd to anyone else?

He also tweeted something about Cardale and JT giving Beck "two thumbs up" because from the way I read Cardales tweets, it doesn't seem like he is much of a Beck fan.

Let's see what the offense does the year after he leaves.

If it improves then I think we can go ahead and just put this one to bed.
Not so fast my friend.

Let's say we get to 10 coaches and everyone remains with Wilson added and he calls the plays. Then what say you? I think Urb would trust Wilson fully and hand over control which is not what happened in '15 and '16. I think Urban gives Wilson more control than any OC he has ever had. If that happens you can't say Beck leaving was sole reason for improvement.

Somebody coming in and doing such a better job than Beck that he gets to have the most free reign.......isn't evidence of Beck sucking?

No. Beck sucks regardless. We'll sort of. He's apparently a great recruiter. He doesn't seem to develop QBs well or know how to devise offensive schemes or plays either. But it seems he wasn't calling the plays anyway. Him leaving doesn't mean he was the primary reason for the offensive woes however. It seems he was the 3rd voice in offensive play calling.

Yeah, I'm not really sure why we're using stats as justification for Beck. ANYONE with a crayon and a coloring book could make that offense move, with all of the talent. It came down to the development of his position group, which was SEVERELY lacking.

eh, I'm a simple guy

2013-good offense
2014-good offense
2015- slightly shitty offense
2016-shitty offense
2017-good offense again? and Beck happened to be employed for just the two shitty years?

Once is a coincidence, twice is a trend.

Not really against the hire but my first reaction wasn't positive.

Mental images of Nebraska QBs throwing the ball, lack of any kind of in game adjustments and inconsistent offense come rushing to mind.

Mainly picturing that last Nebraska QB throwing. It was brutal.

In Urban I trust, just answering your question.

Under Bo and Tim's tenure, Nebraska QBs consistently regressed as the season went on, and showed little development in passing or decision-making from year to year. We'll see soon enough if that was simply a talent issue with Nebraska quarterbacks or whether there were other underlying problems

YOU GUYS JUST HIRED TIM BECK?!? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!

Oh hindsight.

I'm going to wager that the OC duties were split with Warinner coordinating the run game and Beck handling the passing game. That's how things were divided at Kansas, although Warinner was coaching the QBs there and Beck on WRs. Beck was in over his head with QBs. His passers at Nebraska didn't exactly scream fundamentals or do anything but regress over a season. Pretty much the same thing went down at OSU despite having guys that previously looked like heisman winners.

I should say I'm also not on the fire Warinner/Smith/Stud bandwagon. I think the missing linchpin this and last year was quarterback play, and any gameplan calling for 90% pass plays was destined to fail. I'm confident things will right themselves very quickly with a new QB coach, although Kevin Wilson would be too good for anyone to pass up.

I'm betting the Texas offense will also look a lot like Nebraska did. Great running game that scores points and achieves high passing efficiencies, but their QB's will really just be athletes that throw the ball from time to time. They'll lose head scratchers to higher caliber defenses, assuming anyone in the Big 12 ever fits that description.
