Tim Beck (HC Coastal Carolina)

Warriner was calling the plays at the start of the season.

Valid, but I wonder what the offense would have looked like if we kept Warinner in the booth calling plays but gave him Barrett.

It seems like we did the opposite of what you usually do when something is broke. We didn't try out the most sensible combination at first.

We changed Warinner out for Beck before giving him JT to see what he could do with his set of skills. Warriner knows JT and has been around him the last few years, he knew his capabilities. Hindsight is 20/20 but the better plan instead would have been to sub jt for jones for a full game early on.

If Beck were to be let go or demoted, I think we should take a look at Mike Sanford, the young QB coach at Notre Dame. He did a heck of a job with Kizer this year, and it would be good to take more coaches from the Domers. I know this is entirely unlikely, especially because Sanford has ND ties, but it would be damn hilarious. All your coaches are belong to Ohio State!

I like it. I think the improvements in QB play (or regression in our case) is key for hirings. I'm sure Warriner went to bat for Beck when he was hired, but it just doesn't seem to be a good fit even outside of the play calling duties.

Give me a guy like Joe Daniels or Tom Herman any day of the week please. Those types of guys are studs at getting their respective players better. Ito also the reason why I think Beck should be let go. Forget the play calls, look at dramatically different our QBs (not one, but both) looked this season under Beck.

If I recall correctly, Sanford was Urban's first choice to replace Tom Herman, but went with Beck when Sanford chose the Domers.
Could be wrong on that, it happens.

Just sayin': When all is said and done, Sanford may not be available....

That's a fair question vis-à-vis Barrett, but there is still this pretense being set by some Buckeye fans that " things would've been different if Warriner had been calling the plays from the very beginning". It feels good to say that, because it makes one think that there was only one problem and as one poster put it, "the real offense showed up last week" with Warriner in the booth. The truth is that the playcalling started with Warriner and the results were uninspiring, thus precipitating the first of many changes in offensive plans and coaching. Maybe Warriner+Barrett is the magic formula but perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I actually said something about putting the playcaller in the box earlier on. Sounds like Meyer did that but it was to give Beck play calling opportunities which actually backfired to hell and gone.

Moving Warinner in the box would have been perfect early on and Beck on the phone to the QB's would have been a heck of a lot better

Anyone see/know of a HC that is getting chopped ( a la Lame Kitten)? Maybe the Peter Principle was at work, and they wouldn't mind being OC at tOSU? Someone that doesn't have one foot out the door, looking to 'be king in their own domain' rather than a princeling in Urban's. The young guns are getting hard looks to be HC's, and Urban imploded at Fla when he continually had to replace his assistant/coordinators. Stability is key (if there is such a thing). Go Bucks

Exactly this. I was saying to people during Saturday's game: You couldn't figure this out last week?

Short of several miracles happening next weekend, that question is gonna haunt me whenever I think of this season. I understand that for ordinary teams, a one-loss season would be something to celebrate. But, this was no ordinary team. And, I will never believe the loss to MSU had to happen.
I think the loss was necessary. Another shitty performance with a win and the runaway train would have just gained speed. The crash would have been even bigger of it happened against ttun or in the playoffs. Urban even said he wasn't happy with how we won games but he liked having a glass of wine after the win. The loss forced change that was needed. It got is the win last week and i can hope for a rose bowl win. I just wish the crash would have happened earlier like last year. Last year we played shitty against navy and then lost to va tech and it galvanized the team immediately into a championship team that got better every week. Just too late this year.

Isn't this the second change this year? Seems that Coach W, was calling the plays at the start of the year.

I think the issue then was getting the play in quickly. Tempo means we get a base look and no subs from the defense. Ed was calling the game from the sidelines but relying on Beck to convey what the defense was doing (supposedly anyways). That allowed defenses time to sub specialized groupings and call more exotic schemes. Our offense is somewhat simplified to be easier to run with tempo, so we were negating a huge part of what we do. Go read the Michigan player interviews, they were ready to throw everything at us on D, but we ran tempo all game so they never got to sub out of a base defense.
