Tiger Woods (Offical Thread)

Don't want to clutter the Masters thread with this discussion so I thought I would start it here. I am probably one of the few Tiger fans still left on this board because he has brought a lot to the game like him or not and, historically, it has been fun to watch.

The thing that I don't understand and I have not played golf for quite some time is how can a professional golfer, specifically Tiger, go from being so good one weekend and play so poorly, and I mean bad, 2 weekends later on a course almost designed for his game. I certainly have never any interactions with a swing coach or instructor like some of you but sometimes I think he almost tries to hit the ball too hard. I don't know that might be a over simplification of his problems but he doesn't have a smooth swing like a lot of the other guys on tour. I don't know if his swing is so complicated that it is hard to fix but that certainly doesn't explain his putting. Just interested in what you guys, who played the game seriously, think.

I think a big reason is the absence of Butch Harmon, Tiger's former swing coach. Tiger got rid of him because Butch spoke his mind.

"Hey, Jim, it's moving day and that's when Tiger Woods usually gets moving in a major championship!"

Actually, he hasn't been moving much since this moving day...

Back to throwing his clubs and cursing yesterday. You knew that the rally early in his round would not last.

If he doesn't completely change his swing years ago, he's probably well past Jack by now. Biggest mistake of his career.......*

*banging all those chicks while married not withstanding.

I'm beginning to suspect "those chicks" are owed about half of Tiger's net wealth.

Maybe it wasn't changing his swing that fouled up his play, as much as changing his swinging.

You guys hate Tiger SO much. Yeah he isn't shooting well this week. But the commentary wasn't saturated with talks of Tiger. A minority of the conversation focused on him. Quit being such closed-minded haters of the guy and recognize that he has FOURTEEN major championship wins. 2nd all-time. He won 2 weeks ago at Arnold Palmer's tournament. He's not old and he's not irrelevant. He deserves the coverage he gets as well as the criticism. I don't like to see him throw tantrums on the golf course. Henrik Stenson threw a tantrum on 18 when he shot +4 on Thursday and all anyone said was poor guy. He embarrassed himself.

Tiger's game is not totally together. He is easily frustrated. The fact that the majority of people go out of their way to bash on the guy is proof enough that he is still relevant though. I'm 20 years old, and with that I will admit that I am very naive as well as biased. I grew up with Tiger in his prime. He was DOMINATING nearly every tournament he entered. I am a fan of Tiger Woods. My dad enjoys golfing, but I'm not sure if I'd be as enthusiastic about the sport if it weren't for Tiger.

The guy has 72 PGA wins, 38 European Tour wins, and 14 Major Championships. This week is not his week. He is in a time of transition. His whole world came crashing down on him, he's been injured, and he's changing his swing. His whole profession is publicized. The shit doesn't come easy for Eldrick. And then there are so many people who vehemently disregard anything he does, he can never truly win.

This year, the Green Jacket will be worn by someone other than Tiger Woods; thoroughly enjoyable for 98% of the BuckeyePlanet message board. I'll be rooting for Freddy, Lefty, and Bubba.

Nah. He stood under an archway with a rope hanging from the keystone and proceeded to use every bit of strength he had to pull the world down on top of him.

I honestly don't hate the guy, but I feel not even the slightest bit of pity for him.

So he doesn't need my well-wishes then, right?

I don't mind people who root for him. What I disagree with is the notion the the whole sport isn't worth a damn without him. People who are mourning his absence from the top of the leaderboard probably missed a great round of golf today.

No reason to feel pity. He certainly brought it upon himself. Hopefully he's still living like a dog as long as he's unmarried. Don't try to pander to the masses. Be human. That's all I've wanted from Tiger; stop trying to be so fancy with his swing and be human.

I don't know Tiger so I don't "hate" him at all.

I hate the way "fans" and media react to him. Both of those classes of fools fade away when he's not winning, so I root accordingly.

Go field. :)

But what about Phil? People clearly see Phil as the anti-Tiger. Nobody is a fan of Tiger AND Phil. Are people implying that Phil doesn't have shithead fans who scream "Get in the hole!" on 550 yard par-5's? I think the jock sniffers come with popularity, as always. People have little knowledge and hop on the bandwagon.

Thanks for the tips folks. Pretty much: don't be a douchebag, and be practical.

Those are rules I follow in real life, so I would assume that in golf it won't be that much harder.

My advice when you're starting out, find a golfer whose' company you enjoy and player better ball with them. In other words, if your friend hits a 250 yard tee shot and you duff yours, pick up and drop out by your friend. You're not out there all day getting pissed off and after 5 or 10 trips you will be playing more and more of your shots. This how I played with my wife, and how I taught my son.

Replace your divots, and learn how to fix a ball mark.:)
