Thee Ohio State University News

Also/because he has a library degree.

Library Sciences that is.

Always wondered what that really is. Do you really need an advanced course in the Dewey Decimal system? And what’s even more puzzling is the fact that there are graduate programs in Library Sciences.

I must really be underestimating how hard $0.15 / day per overdue title really is.

Wow. So much hate for books. One of my nieces has a Library Science degree and works in the medical records dept at Emory. Has a condo in a hip Atlanta neighborhood so I guess she does ok? Now deceased old friend got his Masters in Library Sciences at U of Dublin and had access to The Book of Kells (at Trinity)--this would be in Ireland. Kind of worth the price of admission in itself. If you value knowledge and culture that is. And he died from complications after crashing his Harley. Somehow he collected enough $0.15 fees to buy the bike.

Lol, of course I only mentioned it because I myself am a “Master” of Library and Information Science from the only such master’s program in Ohio, Kent (Read Kent Write) State University.

Also, most academic libraries use Library of Congress classification... including Thee Ohio State University.

Surprised (maybe not--the state of UT didn't offer a master's so my buddy grifted his way across the pond to Dublin...paid mostly by the state of UT) that Kent has the only masters program. I went to Kent for a semester and have a few family members who are alumni. First bars I hit were there when I was 15 (it was a very different time). The Cove and then JBs...15-60-75. Blanket Hill. (maybe that goes to the poli board). Fond memories of Kent.

Nothing personal. I’m sure an equal number of people have an equally difficult time understanding psychology as a field of study, let alone my content area of quantitative psychology.

Was intended to be tongue in cheek. Probably didn’t come across as such. Sorry.

OK, but how do you feel about that?

Tongue in cheek: I should probably ask a real psychologist how I feel, right?

Not tongue in cheek:
About people understanding WTF quantitative psychology is? Meh... Doesn’t bother me in the least. Probably a matter of experience over time that nobody knows what it is, but it’s never bothered me at all. If people ask for an explanation, I share. When people ask me what I do for a living with that degree I tell them I’m a data scientist; which although the term didn’t exist at the time, the concept did — and exactly why I chose the field of study.

Frankly, there’s not a lot of us quant psych people out here. More now than there was in the late 80’s / early ‘90s when I was in school. I think at the time I went to grad school there were like five programs in the country... so it’s not exactly a large group of us to begin with. But of those I know, we all kinda joke about it. And even back in school it was a bit of a joke when I showed up in Diffy-Q with my engineering fraternity brothers all raising an eyebrow. Probably less confusing now as people have seen how data is kinda the new oil.

I’ve been aware of Library Sciences since I bought a hard drive (20 Meg SCSI w00t!!!11!!) back in ‘89 from someone in Columbus. Interesting story, that... we made arrangements for me to buy it and pick it up from his house... which ended up being the Governor’s mansion. Turns out he, apparently Celeste’s son, was doing his Masters in LS and gave me a brief explanation. I always took it as a combination of research and curation... which is pretty cool... but decidedly not my cup of tea.
