The premise is the same; you're saying parents should get free travel because it is their sons that create this billion dollar industry.

Having your child get a free education and an opportunity to play college ball is perk enough for me and seeing that in person is a privilege, but to each their own.

So seeing your child get a free education and opportunity to play is not a perk to the parent?! Huh, guess I don't understand fatherhood because the thought of that to me would be a helluva perk. Also don't think I should get any other"perk" for my kid being successful, but I know some SEC parents would disagree :wink:

Fine. Let's gather up the parents and force them to work in the mines. If they complain we'll remind them their kids are getting a free education and to shut the fuck up and eat some McDonalds.
Other than being a dick to the parents for no reason, I still haven't seen the question "why the hell not?" addressed.

Also, pretty much every person working at McDonalds on minimum wage is on food stamps, so we are paying for them to eat.

Yes, because watching your child get a free education and playing at Ohio State is equivalent to working in the mines.

I will officially start the movement for parents to get free travel to all games, room and board, food, rental car, travel insurance, clothing (come on now, do we really think Torrance Gibson's mama has a winter coat that will suffice Indy in December?!), camera to take lasting memories (this is dropped if anyone has an Obamaphone already), and a pet sitter for Spot back at home since we can't ignore what they are leaving behind. And unlimited Happy Meal's.

Hey, it's another straw man!

I'll throw one of my own out there- do you guys get this pissed off when kids get free cancer treatment at St. Jude?

JFC, sometimes people do nice things for other people, helping parents watch their kids play in a bowl game would be a nice thing to do, get over it.

I'd just like to point out that I don't think even Mrs./Ms. Apple was suggesting the school should pay for it as a matter of course (I certainly haven't), rather that even if the school or another party wanted to, the rules as they are don't allow it (while allowing for other things that make one wonder how those are allowed yet paying for players' families to attend the bowls isn't allowed). In fact, I'd suggest that the bowls provide the tickets and travel compensation option at their discretion, with the New Years 6/Playoff Bowls expected to do so, instead of the schools.

Fuck their parents! If they don't want to watch their precious children play in high profile games that generate millions for corporate sponsors but jack shit for the people doing the work then maybe they shouldn't let them come to tOSU.

That's a great idea, and one I agree with. However, these are the same bowls that charge schools for the bands' tickets, require schools to purchase tickets at face value even when the game won't be a sell out, and do so for the revenue creation of their tourism partners (hotels, restaurants, etc.).

This is also a good place to mention that "bowl foundations" are tax-exempt "educational endeavors".

Yep, it really is amazing how that farce has been allowed to persist by the IRS with as profitable as they are and the ridiculous spending they do.

Came in here to post the exact same thing. I think people are focused on the wrong entity here. Let's hop on over to The Google and take a look at what these College Playoff bowls are inking in NAMING rights alone from their main sponsor...

The asking prices for title sponsorships to the playoff games are likely in the range of $20 million to $25 million per year depending on the game rotation, according to an estimate from at Chicago-based sports marketing agency Revolution.

So the suits get to sit back and rake in $25M right off the bat for their main sponsor. That's just the start. Why again can they not front $200-300K (ya know, 1%) to help the families out? Lord knows there's countless other people that get comped tickets, but not the players' families.

But, I guess if a player REALLY wanted to help get his parents to the game they could take that $600 swag bag that's sitting in their $300/night hotel room when they arrive and take it down to the local pawn shop to sell for extra cash...oh wait.

Seriously. These big name Bowl game board members get wined and dined while they meet with the executive marketing teams of prospective sponsors and then sit back and watch the final company write a $25 MILLION DOLLAR CHECK TO THEIR TAX-EXEMPT EDUCATIONAL ENDEAVOR ORGANIZATION.

EVERY. YEAR.

And we know that's just the beginning, there's still multiple other sponsors and TV rights being sold.

BASICALLY I'M SUPER JEALOUS BC I TOTES WANT IN ON THIS SCHEME.
