The Voice of the Buckeyes

In years past I would always watch the Bucks or the Browns with the radio on and the TV audio muted, because I always preferred the radio broadcasts.

This year, I got DVR and more channels. Now I am hooked on recording the games and watching them about 20-30 minutes after they start so I can fast forward through the commercials. By the time I pause a few times or replay a questionable play, I'll still be behind a bit at halftime so I can fast forward through part of the halftime drivel.

I typically catch up in the third quarter.

Bottom line: I miss the radio broadcasts, but I sure as shit don't miss waiting through the damn commercials.

Buh Nim brought up some great not so long ago memories.

Listening to Lachey yelling "defense, defense" into the microphone as the final play of the 2003 Fiesta Bowl was happening, and then hearing him screaming like a drunken idiot after Cie sacked Dorsey was numbing. Gotta love the "Our-Side-Homers." Peace.

I used to Love Terry Smiths play by play calling and when EDDIE broke the single game rushing, that was Awesome to listen to Terry call that game.

What ever happened to Terry Smith and where did he go?

This is a joke, right? Paul Keels is beyond awful. The "I turn the TV down" crowd always cracks me up. Well, unless it's Reds baseball and you're turning down the TV to avoid hearing George Grande and to hear Marty B on the radio (and Thom B as well).

Keels has his troubles, but he has a good voice. Lachey is very good. I would rather listen to Keels mis call a screen, get the yardage wrong, etc... than listen to whoever it is that thinks our colors are Garnet and Grey, or hear about Barn Childress.

I don't know what your talking about. My favorite player is Craig Kressel. Barn Childress was good, but Kressel was special.

It takes a miracle to get a radio call of the Buckeye games here in the Tri-State... you have to find some dink ass , twenty watter out of Hamilton(!) or Portsmouth. I think Columbus stations tend to beam their signal north and southeast.

I don't like the trend toward "homer" announcers. I miss the style of Marv Homan who gave you a straight call and didn't let his bias cover the play on the field.

I can't stand Munch or the Bengal's mouthpiece, Dave Lapham. They remind me of Shock radio, say something outrageous, it'll get the attention of all idiots down range and pump up your ratings.

Maybe Homer isn't the best way to phrase it,

but I have no problem with homer announcers just as long as they call what they see.

For example, Jim Karsatos cheered for the Bucks, this came through on the air. Yet, when he saw problems with the team whether that be in play or coaching, he would come right out and say it.

I think it is rediculous when announcer can't be biased when they are working for a certain team. Obviously Keels and Co. are biased, and that is the way it should be. I just wish Kirk would be more OSU biased... though he is most times.

I, for one, am absolutely not in favor of Herbie being biased on ESPN. Why people would want him to be a laughingstock analyst like Desmond Howard, for example, I'll never understand. People bitch about Holtz spitting his way in to saying ND is fantastic, and then in the next breath want Herbie's head cause he's not a "true buckeye?"

Herbie bleeds scarlet and grey. He is also a professional. As such, he makes informed assessments. And, it would be foolish for him to do nothing but chat up OSU all the time.

I did this during the Texas game. I was out at a wedding reception and the TV's were quieter than the music was. But I had my radio and headphones, so I listened to the game. I thought it was weird that there was a 5-8 second delay between the two. Is that normal?

I know that there's someway that different TV set-ups have different lag. I know this is weird, but when we go to BW3 for Monday Night Football, some of the TV's are about 5 seconds behind some of the other TV's. That makes for some funny cheers (we'll cheer a big hit and then 5 seconds later the people at the other side will cheer the same big hit).

Anyway, I guess I have two questions, for anyone who might know something. First, why does BW3 have more delay on some TV's than others? Does it have to do with some TV's are maybe on satelite and others are on cable? Second question: what's the normal delay for TV?

I've noticed about a 5 second delay between HD and regular. That may be the difference between the TV's.

I have Time Warner.
