The Sporting News B10 Preview...

Just got the rag, my thoughts

1-Our WRs are way better than scUMs, IMO. Ginn is better than Breaston, and Holmes is far more explosive than Avant. Depth is a wash, although scUM has better TEs.
2-I thought they were being a little generous to the D-line in their rankings, which is cool with me.
3-They missed Dukes on the roster, his status had not been confirmed by them, I guess.
4-The coaches comments on the fan atmosphere in Columbus were exactly right. I'm surprised they are still so hung up over Cooper getting fired. He did not get a raw deal.
5-I loved the comments on scUM "soft, arrogant, overrecruited players"-that is exactly right.

UM does not have more talent, You'd have to be living in a dream world

UM has a slight edge on the running backs, oline, and probably QB. However, OSU has a superior dline, linebackers, corners, safties, and a slight edge at wideout. I would argue that tight end is essentialy a draw. However, OSU's advantages at linebacker and in the secondary are so big that it is clear that OSU is clearly more talented. I do not think that Chad Hoobler and Marucs Freeman would have much problem cracking UM's starting lineup.

I have a feeling Penn State will be higher than 6th in the big 10...

They had a VICIOUS D last year, and should have little dropoff this year. Their O can only get better, with some star freshmen recruits.

Plus, JoePa's got his back against the wall. He's fighting for his carreer this season.

I checked this out a couple days ago and if I remember correctly, there was a section where the broke down the individual units for offense and defense. I checked out the defensive unit rankings for the Big Ten and they were as follows:

Line: OSU #1
Linebackers: OSU #1
Secondary: OSU #1

Impressive.

hell you could even make a case for QB
while i think saying UM is clearly more talented across the board is laughable, IMO you're being a homer if you think Smith/Zwick are better than Henne, Edwards or not.........you could argue that they are ahead of him right now, but i shudder to think what either of them would have looked like on the field as true freshmen, when they were both very shaky more often than not in their 3rd year in the program

defense will be better than 2002. I hope their right!

If our defense is even as good as, let alone better than, our 2002 defense then we will run the table...

The 2002 offense was underrated, IMO. Although the current receiving corps is undoubtedly deeper than 2002, Michael Jenkins was a better individual receiver than any of the current players (although Holmes and Ginn are both special talents in their own rights, and either (or both) may develop into better players than MJ). The running game in 2002 was far superior with MoC, and Ross and Hall as capable (not great) back-ups; the youngsters (MoW, Haw, Pittman) really need to mature quickly or else the 2005 offense will become one-dimensional (hence predictable, hence defensible) in a hurry. The respective lines are a wash, with maybe a slight edge to 2002. The real difference is at QB, where CK, with less inherent talent than either Zwick or Smith, made all the key plays at all the right times - huge intangible edge to the 2002 offense, at least until either JZ or TS can prove otherwise.

2005 will be an interesting season - lots of questions coming in (QB, RB, DL, CB, K, P), but also lots of talent to fill in the gaps. The best news is that the pipeline is full, and the Bucks should be legit NC contenders for the next several years.

I think a big thing with Smith is that while he hasn't been able to keep every drive going in some of his earlier games, he was fairly comparable to Krenzel in my book. The purdue game he made a few mistakes, but two of his INTs were the WRs not feeling the need to catch the passes that hit their hands.

Smith made more happen with his feet than Craig, and at times showed a lot more prowess thru the air. He only had 1 INT that was his fault, which is impressive for half a season. (edit: I should clarify, Troy was more dangerous with his feet, but in reality Craig did make more happen at crucial times by scrambling)...

There is no way IMO that our DL can match the 02 line. I think Kudla will be solid, Pitcock a terror, and Richardson is maturing quickly, but Smith Anderson Scott and Fraser were just unbelievable.

Our LBs are clearly much better, too bad it isn't possible to use all 6 at the same time :)

Our DBs are an interesting discussion. Youboty might be the best CB we've had since the days of Springs/Plummer/Clement/etc. I think O'Neal is gonna be a stud by midseason and Lane/Everett/Welch should be solid too. Keep in mind that Gamble was a gamechanger at CB coming up with tons of key INTs (including the winning one against PSU for a TD). Gamble got exploited a lot more in 03 IMO. Our safeties are pretty comparable, with Salley sharing Doss' leadership and Salley>Nickey vs. Whitner<doss. ="">

I think our defense will be very solid. All I want them to be is dominant up front and disciplined, and our talent/speed will do the rest. Plus I think our offense is going to surprise some people this year.</doss.>
