I didn't mess up the O-H return or anything but I'm not much better. Last time I was in Masschusetts I went to pick my buddy up at the steamship and I was wearing a Buckeye t-shirt. In my defense I will say I was completely bombed at the time. Anyway, a guy walking off the boat sees my shirt and says "Go Bucks!" to which I responded "Thank you" :shake:

Sometimes the O-H can catch you off guard.

For example, I was walking down the street in Florida back in may, just talking to my sister and looking in some stores when someone comes walking by an proclaims "O-H!". It caught me by surprise and I paused for like 5 seconds before responding, making the whole interaction a little awkward.

This has happened to me before in Volunteer country... it's almost the last thing you would expect, but there are some Vol fans that also like the Buckeyes...

I have fun with dropping an "O-H" in airports... response is usually pretty good...

I have a good friend who was raised in Iowa. Whenever the rest of us do the "O-H" "I-O" chant, he throws a "W-A" in at the end. He's a diehard hawkeye fan, but goes to an OSU game every few years. He does hate it when I ask if it's "cyclone season" in Iowa, though.

The chant on the road:

i grew up in arizona and my dad always used to say "go bucks" whenever we would see someone in buckeye gear. i used to think it was so stupid (i was 12). now i do it without fail. in chicago (where i used to live), i always got a go bucks or an I-O back but here in NYC it probably happens 1-5 times. i have noticed that its gotten worse in the past year though. bandwagon getting a little full maybe?

i was in times square two weekends ago and some 20 year old guy was on the corner at a red light rocking a tOSU shirt. i said go bucks. he said huh? i said go bucks. he cocked his head and just looked at me. i said, your shirt, Ohio State, the bucks, you know. and he still didn't say anything. my buddy who was visiting from c-bus told him not to wear the shirt if he isn't a fan.

A few weeks ago, I was wearing an OSU t-shirt when I went to a Phillies baseball game in Philly with my girlfriend, and we saw 4 other Buckeye fans- 2 just walking through the park (one of whom yelled "Go Bucks" to me), the guy sitting next to me had on OSU gear and a Buckeye tattoo, and then a lady and her daughter in the parking lot (who yelled "OH" at me- I gave her an "IO" back). Then, about a week later we were at the beach in DE, again I had on a OSU t-shirt, and I heard an "OH" from somewhere to my left. I looked over and saw a group of people waving- gave 'em an "IO". It was awesome.

My girlfriend is now convinced that I am a part of a huge Buckeye cult that you can't hide from, even miles away from Ohio. I told her that's about right, and that resistence is futile. She'll be coming with me to Columbus this fall.....

My personal favorite out-of-state group spelling experience was in the West Palm Beach area (somewhere near there anyway) back in the mid-90s. A business associate, who was not even a football fan, and I were driving along I-95 and passed a car absolutely wall-papered in Buckeye Bumper Stickers.

He changed lanes after passing them, putting us directly in front of them with little space in between.

I don't remember what he was trying to say to me at the time, because I ignored him and turned around and made the O-H with my arms while mouthing the letters.

Those in the car behind me erupted. Everyone but the driver gave me an I-O and the driver pointed at me with a big grin on his face and high-fived the others when they were done with their own gestures.

My business associate stopped in mid-sentence and looked at me quizzically and said, "What the hell was that?"

I just smiled and grinned.

He knew me well enough to know that meant I wouldn't elaborate so he just muttered with an air of resignation, "Whatever it was, you sure fired them up."

He's still wondering...

Anytime an idiot says "O-H" when I'm on vacation and wearning an OSU shirt, I just ignore them. Usually (as they are typically from Ohio) they are fat and look annoying, so I'd rather not get in any conversation with them.

If you don't get a response, it's not because they don't undestand it - it's just that they would rather not be bothered by obnoxious chants as they are going about their daily routine.

This is the type of person that doesn't respond.

Any Questions?
