The Oughts (2000-09)

It really just hit me these last few days that the entire decade is coming to an end... I can remember old timers from my childhood referring to their own childhood as 'ought 4' and so on, which means we will all be those old timers for some other young people some day in the distant future (except BestBuckeye who is 734 years old, and, like Yoda before him, has another 200+ years ahead of him...)... to think this all started with the Y2K scare, the death of Prince's '1999' and Dubya's election. What a decade...

I'm not sure what the cultural relevance of the decade will prove to be for historians, but, since it bookended my entire 20's, it has been a meaningful time for me.

So, a thread. What have the Oughts meant to you?

I have...


- experienced 9/11 while in the NYC metro area; and my younger brother lived through it while in lower Manhattan
- graduated college
- lived in 5 states, 2 countries and 7 cities, including Kingston, JA
- worked in banking during the go-go years
- almost survived the financial crash with a job
- attended a Buckeye national championship game
- attended another two Buckeye bowl games, and countless other games
- joined BP
- watched as two kids from my high school went on to play in the pros
- skied for the first time
- bought and sold a house
- surfed for the first time
- saw many of my friends go off to war
- went to vegas for the first time - and a fifth time, and counting
- traveled to Europe for the first time, and more
- lost a friend in a tragic accident in Chicago
- welcomed many of my friends back from war
- witnessed many of my friends grow up and get married
- lost my right leg for almost a year
- discovered the BP drunk thread
- and so on...
 
1. Graduated H.S.
2. Went to OSU
3. Witnessed 9/11 in study hall my freshman year of high school (Dad was supposed to fly back from France next day, didn't come back for another 4, and it scared the shit out of me)
4. Met some great people, and a lot of them are still part of my life
5. Sisters got married
6. I am now an Uncle
7. Witnessed one of the greatest days of my life (Jan. 3, 2003)
8. I know some who have fought in Iraq
9. And all of the above have returned home safely
10. The number of OSU football games that I attended grew exponentially

For me?

1. 9/11
2. The birth and death of a daughter in 2002
3. two new houses (2000 and 2006)
4. Watched my oldest go from ADHD hell spawn to 1st degree senior black belt in three years
5. Coached an undefeated U10 fastpitch softball team
6. bought our first two cars off the showroom floor
7. attended 5 OSU/Michigan games
8. attended all of the major non-conference games at the Shoe.
9. learning of my brother's leukemia and then his diabetes
10. getting laid off for the the first time in my life.
11. having a new and better job 95 minutes later

- 9/11 - I was in study hall my junior year of high school
- Graduated from High School
- Graduated from The Ohio State University
- Watched OSU win a NC
- Went about 50 Ohio State home football games
- Became an uncle twice over
- Bought my first ever new car
- Grew a beard for the first time

-Became jaded and disillusioned about our federal gov't - mainly supreme court and congress. I suppose this is a natural step in any American once they reach their late 20s.
-Became more patriotic than ever before in my life
-bought my first home
-Became jaded (re: gov't) once again
-Earned my PE license
-travelled to Europe
-became a husband
-sold my first home, bought our second home
-became a business owner
-saw my mother go from diagnosis to deceased within 9 mos. from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
-travelled to Europe again
-travelled to Australia
-became a father

A decade of ups and downs, but all it takes is walking through my front door at home and hear 'Dada!' and the troubles of the world melt away.

-Graduated from OSU
-Watched the Buckeyes win the national championship
-Bought a house
-Got to be a best man
-Got married
-Finished my master's
-Got an A/P position at OSU
-Became a father

Good decade, looking forward to the next one. :)

Let's see here:

Landed a job in 2000 that started my career.

Finished my time in the Army in 2001.

I was in Glen Burnie for 9/11. I remember watching the 2nd plane hit the WTC and I told Jackie that we had to go home.

Got Married in 2002.

Watched the Wings and the Buckeyes win titles in their sports within 5 months of each other in 2003 :banger:

5 months after that I was taking a job in Tampa which was going to Iraq

Spent a year in Iraq as one of those scumbag contractors you hear about :p

Watched friends that I'd known from my time in the Army go to both Afghanistan and Iraq multiple times.

Came back from Iraq and started at Wright Pat.

I got tired of driving from Canal Winchester to fuckin Dayton every day, so we bought a house in Springfield :biggrin:

Ella was born in 2007

Baby #2 is on the way, but HE will be born in 2010.

-Played my last football game. It's a little weird when you've been doing something for 11 years and then it's over.
-Graduated college twice
-Spent my best 3 credit hour class on a 3 week trip to Europe drinking too much, partying too hard, and pretty much proving that nothing good happens after 10pm or when you get 2 hours of sleep a night.
-Sitting in my job in the computer lab during grad school trying to get news about 9/11
-Fell in love and had my heart broken
-Met my future wife
-Got my first shitty job
-Bought my first new car
-Witnessed tOSU winning the National Championship for the first time in my life
-Bought a house with my future wife
-Quit my first shitty job for my second shitty job
-Got fired from my second shitty job after 2 months
-Experienced unemployment
-Got my first good job
-Got married
-Lost both of my grandfathers, and all 3 of my wife's living grandparents

-Got stared down by Andy Geiger on the Huntington Club elavators for having my "Fuck Michigan" shirt on
-Watched tOSU beat TSUN...in Ann Arbor...for the first time that I could remember
-tOSU NC
-Joined BP
-Lived in Georgia, visited 40 states, some numerous times
-Saw the Grand Canyon
-Had a couple neices and nephews
-Had people I loved pass away
-Drank many beers and other assorted liquors
-Got laid off...stayed laid off for over a year. FUCK. THAT.
-Still haven't grown up, and don't really plan on it, so fuck you

- Watched 9/11 unfold after finishing a test in the basic meteorology course at Keesler AFB, MS
- Graduated from the USAF meteorology school with the 2nd highest average in course history (at the time)
- Completed my Atmospheric Sciences degree at Saint Louis University
- Bought 3 new cars
- Lived in Seoul for a year
- Lost my father
- Moved to Colorado Springs
- Met my soon to be wife
- Bought my first house
- Watched most of my friends marry and start families
- Deployed to a little [censored]hole in NW Iraq for 6 months

1. Went to 8 Schools (2 Middle Schools, 4 High Schools, 2 Colleges)
2. Became a Buckeye
3. Lived through 9/11.... Went to Ground Zero a month after the attacks
4. Got laid for the first time
5. Lived on both coasts
6. Went to The Grand Canyon, New York, The Bahamas, Disney World, Atlanta
7. Saw my father go homeless
8. Saw my grandfather unexpectedly die
9. Got a gun pulled on me by my grandfather
10. Burned a lot of bridges
11. Rebuilt a lot of bridges with the right people
12. Saw Kobe and Lebron play against each other live
13. Met the entire 2001 Miami Hurricane team and talked to Jarrett Payton (Walter's son) for 20 mins
14. Got my drivers license
