The Ohio State Baseball (Official Thread)

There is OSU's competition and why the Buckeyes are not a major player like LSU, ASU and UF.
OSU is not going to out-recruit LSU, ASU, or UF in baseball. Way too many reasons for the top players to head south or west. Heck, if they could take the top kids that have been going to MAC schools, they'd win the Big Ten almost every year. I'm just glad Beals is expanding OSU's recruiting presence outside I-270.

Yes, that's true, but there is no reason why OSU can't keep at least a few of these guys home instead of losing them to those southern teams. But whatever the reason, when your recruiting rival is Dayton that says a lot about your program.

Buckeyes sign one of Ohio's top players

http://www.fandy.com/node/16762

Deep down, Xavier Turner always wanted to be a Buckeye.
And make no mistake, the Ohio State University baseball program wanted him to be a Buckeye.
Both sides can be happy, as the Sandusky junior standout baseball player verbally committed to Ohio State, ending any and all speculation before his junior year of high school finishes.
Turner can officially sign a letter of intent for a baseball scholarship on Nov. 12.
"I think every kid growing up in Ohio at some point in their life wants to go to Ohio State," Turner said. "It's that whole tradition of being a Buckeye. It's the best school in Ohio.

Welcome aboard, Mr Turner!

Kenston's Porter is Plain Dealer baseball Player of Year
Published: Monday, July 04, 2011

ALLISON CAREY/PLAIN DEALER
Choosing football or baseball was more than just a toss-up decision for Patrick Porter. Baseball is his first love.

He flirted with another for a while, fearing his first love would abandon him.

Things all worked out in the end, however, and Kenston outfielder Patrick Porter, The Plain Dealer's Baseball Player of the Year, is about to begin another chapter in his athletic career.

"Until last spring, I was thinking I was going to end up playing football in college," said Porter, a two-sport star. "Baseball has always been my first love but I really wasn't hearing from that many schools. It wasn't until late last winter that I started getting baseball interest."

Better late than never. Porter signed a national letter of intent with Ohio State in March.

Division I colleges such as Syracuse, Marshall and Toledo had shown football interest after the 6-0, 200-pound senior earned second-team All-Ohio honors as a running back and safety.

Porter went on to have a fantastic senior season this spring -- earning All-Ohio honors again -- and he credits signing with the Buckeyes for part of it.

"After I signed I was just able to go out and play and not worry about college," he said. "I was relaxed. I had no worries."

Porter, the only junior selected to The Plain Dealer All-Star team in 2010, batted .561 this spring with an area-leading eight home runs, 35 RBI, 12 doubles and five triples. He stole 22 bases, scored 47 runs and did not commit an error in the outfield.

Over the past two seasons, in which Porter helped the Bombers compile a 34-18 record and win a pair of Chagrin Valley Conference titles, he batted .517 with 14 homers and 68 RBI while committing one error.

I saw that Matt Wisler signed wit the Padres yesterday. 500k signing bonus.

Yep and Xavier Turner is no longer committed to Ohio State. He still likes us, apparently...but X may be headed south. Lists South Carolina, Miami, LSU, and Vandy as favorites. Stinks to lose Wisler and Turner in the same week.

Buckeyes Lose Haase, Gain Long

More tough news for OSU baseball...

The Ohio State coaching staff has been notified that Divine Child High School catcher Eric Haase, of Dearborn, Michigan, has come to an agreement of terms with the Cleveland Indians.

But it's not all bad...

Right-handed pitcher Jaron Long of Chandler-Gilbert Community College will be among the members of the incoming recruiting class for Ohio State. Long, the son of current Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long, will be the fourth junior college member of the recruiting class.

This is a great blog (and Twitter feed) to follow if you're interested in Ohio high school and college baseball.

Bucks got a huge 2012 commitment tonight from Zach Ratcliffe of Columbus Academy. He's potentially the power hitter OSU hasn't had since Swisher, probably slotted in at 1B.

Still hoping they can pull back Xavier Turner. He's down to OSU and Vandy.
