The Memorial (Jack's Tourney)

Sorry I don't keep up, but does anyone know the names of tOSU golfers that now make their living on Tour? Always want to cheer a Buckeye, but lose track once the Buckeye sports information machine doesn't track them. We've had some good ones, but (I don't believe) anyone notable after John Cook. Now even he doesn't play on the senior circuit anymore, and is spotty as an announcer. Thanks in advance. Go Bucks anywhere and everywhere.

Last I heard, members were leaving Muirfield due to it's extreme difficulty, and, inability of regular golfers to 'have fun' on the course. Scares me just looking at some of the landing areas given my driver dispersion(s). Still a great course, seems to hold in the 100 top courses in USA. Hats off to those that play the game so very well. Go Buckeye golfers everywhere!

Yes it’s amazing the rhythm and hand eye coordination these players have. Some of the swing speed generation is unbelievable. The ability to control the ball flight and manage the shot distance. For guys with no athletic ability their prowess is amazing.

As a golfer with no hand eye coordination and lack of golfing prowess, I find myself pretty amazed by PGA events haha. I miss going to the Memorial though, one of my favorite things to do back in Columbus

Still have my badge from the inaugural Memorial. Was a clubhouse pass, so got to roam inside. Alas, didn't purchase a shirt, but did get to meet up with Chris Roderick, an assistant pro there, who was the big brother of roommate, and on golf team at Miami (O). Also saw Rod again at Olympic Club where he was head pro. Still haven't played, Muirfield, Scioto, Double Eagle in C'bus area. Certainly too old now to play from the tips (or the whites).

With the Memorial Tournament in Dublin this week (and weekend), some PGA golfers made the short trip down to Ohio State for a friendly 3-point contest at the Buckeyes' practice facility.

There was a time when this tournament was where’s considered the 5th major. I remember attending in the late 70s and early 80s and the worlds best players were there. Still a pretty decent smattering of top players this week. But still missing guys in the top 20-30 world rankings. Where’s Homa, Finau, I’m, Fleetwood, and Rose to name a few.

Golf Digest still has the course as a top 10, but the factors that drew players changed. Jack is still the GOAT for so many, but now very old. Not many personal connections to top players. Weiskopf gone. Buckeye golf cold for a long time and central Ohio golf not what it once was. Not sure currently, but Columbus had more courses per capita than any city in America at one point. I'm hoping this new chip initiative will bring high rollers, who want to be members and invest in the Memorial and central Ohio golf.

Yeah, I would have thought that more of the big names would have been there too. Especially since the PGA upped the tournament's prize money pot; the total purse went up $8M from last year

PGA Tour to add multiple $20 million tournaments in 2023 as attempt to combat LIV Golf, per reports

Will these big-time purses be enough to stem the tide of departures?

The PGA Tour has responded -- a number of times and in a variety of ways -- to the upstart LIV Golf league. Their latest counter to LIV ripping away a handful of stars and multi-time major winners is a reported plan to add a big-money fall schedule to the annual calendar with individual purses of approximately $20 million put up for grabs among the top 50 players from the previous season.

According to Golfweek, the PGA Tour will likely overlay presently scheduled events with three tournaments in that will pay out $60 million across the fall. They will feature the 50 golfers who qualify for the BMW Championship, the second of three FedEx Cup Playoff events, and be spread across Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

Another proposed change is that only 70 golfers (down from 125) would qualify for the first FedEx Cup Playoff event, the St. Jude Championship. Only those 70 would be guaranteed PGA Tour cards for the following season, which will move back to being held over a calendar year beginning in January 2024.

Additionally, the purses of eight different events have already been increased, many of them nearly doubled, with the biggest individual purse in golf now belonging to The Players Championship, which was bumped from $20 million to $25 million.

Well, the LIV Golf tour definitely got the PGA's attention. Jack's tournament got a $8M bump in prize money.
