I haven't seen the newest remake of the Longest Yard, but the Sports Guy on Page 2 has a great take on it:

The Longest Yard(s)

The original is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Adam Sandler has gone from a very new, hip, comedian to the celebrity that I most want to go away.

At the very least, this movie moves away from the standard Sandler movie formula: sappy chick flick disguised as a comedy, with the lovesick everyman in Sandler who's madly in love with an imperfect chick that he can't have (insert Drew Barrymore, Marisa Tomei, Kristy Swanson, Winona Rider, etc. here), Sandler is always a bad-ass who can beat the shit out of & out drink anyone but is also fluffy & sensitive at the same time, with the same actors sprinkled around in different roles (who're lightly funny at first but annoying after being overexposed), with 70's-early 80's love songs as the backdrop.

Hollywood is sad.

How pathetic is it that they have to remake tons of movies?
Almost as pathetic as the fact that they have to turn awful tv shows into movies, also. For reference, see: Charlie's Angels, Dukes of Hazzard, Starsky & Hutch, Bewitched, etc.

AKAK: "Dukes of Hazard awful?"

I'm going to see the Dukes solely to see Jessica Simpson in a bikini. That shit is dope!!

I may have to wait for the DVD....

Them's damn near fightin words.
Your right. I apologize for lumping that in with the rest of that drivel. Dukes of Hazzard was no worse than bad. It wasn't good, but it probably wasn't awful.

anybody actually see the bewitched commercials? she doesnt wiggle her nose, she wiggles her whole face.

I have been in love since Dead Calm.

If she is going to wiggle anything I am going to pay to see it.

I do agree it is a shame that Hollywood wont invest in making movies from all of the wonderful stories that are out there. I am a big fan of Richard Russo and thought HBO's version of Empire Falls was wonderful. It would never have made it on the big screen even if they had cut it down to two hours.

Problem is that the movie dollar comes from young people who will pay to see Sandler, remakes and anything that is dumbed down to a certain common denominator. Even stories that could be interesting are simplified so as not to confuse (read turn away) those under 25. (You could probably link this to the complaints about the Star Wars epic right about here.) I didn't know until I saw Pearl Harbor that the war itself was nothing but a backdrop to a formulaic love story. When is the last time a film that dealt with complex issues was a money maker?

Ditto.

Dukes Trivia: can someone (w/o looking it up) name for me the two Duke cousins that replaced Bo & Luke for the one season where Tom Wopat & Jon Schneider had a contract dispute with CBS?

So, which of these remakes makes you cringe the most:

Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka?

Steve Martin as Inspector Closeau?

Adam Sandler remaking The Longest Yard?

Nicole Kidman making Bewitched?

Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane making a movie based on a play which was based on a movie?

Paris Hilton remaking House of Wax?

Jessica Simpson and other talentless actors re-imagineering The Dukes of Hazzard (the worst being Burt Reynolds as Boss Hogg)?

That they're remaking The Bad News Bears?

Or, Cedric The Entertainer and Mike Epps as Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton in a hip-hop update of the Honeymooners?
