This is one of my favorite deep space photos. The tadpole galaxy's appearance is so odd because it collided with another galaxy and the strong gravitational forces between them stripped off the long tail of debris. Two amazing things about this photo are that the tail is more than 280,000 light years in length and there are about 6,000 galaxies in the background. Mind numbing.

Anyone who thinks that there is no God has never seen photos like these before.

The irony of that statement is that most people who study this stuff are atheists who believe in the big bang theory, claiming that what you see in the photo can't possible be made by intelligent design.

I think "let there be light" is the Big Bang.

Now, I think Adam and Eve in the Garden is not literal, but that does not mean there is no God.

I think a lot of the bible is written as they understood it at the time and isn't literal. Call it the "Word of God" all we want, but fact is, it was written by mere mortals with very little understanding of the universe as we know it.

The "Great Flood" could very well have been a cat6 hurricane with a 35 foot storm surge. the land was very low and bowled like NOLA is and could have stayed flooded for over month

I think you're spot on Gator, IMHO

Very, very possible.

It's interesting to note the Mayan Calander's "end of ages" all have to do with a "cleansing" of the Earth:
  1. Destruction by earth (this one I haven't 'ID'ed', but also haven't put any time into it.. perhaps the earth splitting apart (read: pangea) and the tower of babel)
  2. Destruction by fire (Sodom & Gomorrah(sp?))
  3. Destruction by water (Noah's flood - it's interesting that every culture has this story and that it's the most recent 'cleansing')
  4. Destruction by ether (this would be the one that is set to happen in (we're dooommmeeddd) 2012. The ether is the spirtual world - note most traditions prophecies have to do with a messiah/anti-messiah figure and a god figure weeding out evil)
The mayans we're HUGE on stars - their predictions for solar eclipses are like 1/12th of a second off ... thousands of years later.

Justification for this comment would be useful. Astronomists are, I believe, no more likely to be atheists than anyone else. And you seem to draw a parallel between acceptance of the Big Bang theory and atheism, which I think is goofy.

............one thing is certain - they are an amazing ancient artifact that we don't know the purpose to.
I think an Egyptologist might find that notion a bit insulting. The Egyptian Pyramids were constructed to be burial monuments, as evidenced by the tombs and hieroglyphs found in them.

Yet you let Gator's silliness pass without a similar calling out?

Calling out? My silliness? Whoa....gimmie somea dat espresso!

If you are referring to my comment that the universe has a builder, that is a not such a far out assumption in my opinion, but something I do not say with a scientific certainty. While not so profound, asking how things got created assumes a Creator. Who created the Creator? I dunno, I'm just trying to find a good wide receiver for the fantasy league.

Saying that astronomers are atheists is a stretch, but if true, that assertion is certainly capable of being explained with some kind of poll or stat. Asking for a basis is hardly a "calling out"

I see you provided a stat after I posted. Interesting. I'd love to see the data, and how atheist was defined. I'm skeptical of that stat, but if valid, wow!

Here's the study that was published in Nature in 1998:

[/i]

Which I provided.

On a survey of National Academy of Sciences members only 7.5% of Astronomers self identified as believing in a god (79% identified as specifically disbelieving in a god).

Now please feel free to provide one supporting your claim that atheists could not have seen such photos.
