Man who sold LSU equipment chooses jail over revealing player source

USATSI_7519596.jpg

An LSU player owes a Baton Rouge man a pretty big favor.

Fletcher Sanders is a shoe store employee in Baton Rouge who recently sold some official, game-worn LSU football equipment on eBay. Sanders sold a pair or LSU cleats and gloves that had been advertised as being worn during LSU's victory over Ole Miss this season.

When Sanders was contacted by police about selling the items -- it's illegal to do so as the equipment is LSU property -- he told them he was selling the equipment for an LSU football player. Sanders was then given a choice by the police. He could either reveal the source of the equipment, or he could go to jail.

Sanders chose jail.

"Do what you have to do," Sanders told police according to the police report. "I am not going to be responsible for ruining someone's career."

Sanders was then booked on counts of principal to theft and possession of stolen things. He was released from jail on Tuesday after posting $3,000 bail.

LSU football equipment is leased to student-athetes, who are not allowed to give it away or sell it.

Just sayin'; At Ohio State it is a NCAA violation for as player to sell his "football stuff"; maybe the NCAA doesn't count this since it is "stolen football stuff".

I actually think that's pretty noble of him. Honest.

He knew his part in the scheme and what he was getting into. Didn't go out of his way to have a college kid dragged through anything.

Let's not kid ourselves either - a booster will probably step up for the lawyer, make it worth his while, etc.
Honor Among Thieves is nice and all, but this is how racketeering works. The guy who gets caught does the time, but he also gets paid and taken care of.

See, I guess I'm just a jaded old prick.....my first reaction was that the guy was so scared of what would be done to him for ratting a player out he just took the fall.

LSU avoids its annually massive early-entry defection

Based on the past couple of years, LSU has to be feeling pretty good when it comes to players leaving early for the NFL this time around.

In 2013, it was 10 (11 if you count Tyrann Mathieu), and in 2014 it was seven; both of those were tops amongst all FBS programs. In 2015? That number is officially three.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, three LSU seniors-to-be — offensive linemen Jerald Hawkins and Vadal Alexander and defensive back Jalen Mills — announced that they would be returning to the Tigers for another season. The news is not surprising as all three were expected back, but it’s nonetheless official.

The three players the Tigers lost to early-entry are linebacker Kwon Alexander, defensive back Jalen Collins and defensive end Danielle Hunter. One player who flirted with leaving eligibility on the table this year was redshirt sophomore wide receiver Travin Dural, who confirmed in mid-December that he would be returning.

This year’s tally marks the lowest number for the Tigers since 2011.

LSU to earn $8.75 million from future neutral site games

According to information obtained by The Advocate, LSU will be cashing in on a pair of future non-conference match-ups taking place on a neutral field. As reported, ESPN will pay LSU a sum of $4 million when the Tigers face BYU in Houston in 2017. ESPN will cut another check in the amount of $4.75 million when LSU travels to Arlington, Texas to face Miami the following season (2018).

LSU is starting to see some nice income from neutral site arrangements. The $4.75 million due from the Miami game in 2018 is expected to be the most LSU will receive to play in a neutral site game, but the school is likely padding the coffers with frequently scheduled neutral site games. LSU has played in a neutral site game four out of the last five seasons.
