Is it fair to ask if our season was sacrificed to develop Dawand Jones?

I like the kid but I think the whole line rotation was off a bit this year based in guys playing out of position.

Mumford was a better tackle than guard.

Paris Johnson was one of best 5, but started out of position….so we had (2) tackles playing guard.

Meanwhile, you kinda have a 1 trick pony playing RT.

I don’t know….the line just bothered me all year. I wouldn’t say it’s on Dawand as much as it is on coaching staff to sacrifice the best “unit” just so the guys with highest upside played.

I wonder where we are if line all year is:

NPF
Jones
Wypler
Johnson
Munford

or maybe flip Munford and Johnson.

Again, not trying to pick on Dawand, but I’d say that was the sore spot in terms of running ball. There’s a lack of explosiveness and extension on his side where the run game just gets limited. In fairness, he’s largely a huge wall that stands up well in pass protection. Today was a rough day, but it’s a pint I’ve made before about guys on line playing out of position.

To be up front, I’ve never been a fan of playing “the best 5 guys”. I’ve never agreed with that premise. Centers, guards, and tackles have different skill sets needed. I think we had too many guys out of position this year and our line was SIGNIFICANTLY overrated. As a unit they didn’t work that well in run game.

Will be something to watch in 2022, IMO.

I still think we'd lose the two games where we gave up over 260 yards rushing on defense. That's difficult to overcome no matter how much you have on offense.

No it's not on any of the kids. Yes the false starts made me throw shit at my TV, but we lost because of crappy defensive player development and an inability to call plays on defense.. just didn't put the players in the right positions to stop the run., Not saying LJ should lose his job, but Day needs to see if he has gone a bit soft in his training.

LJB laid out in September the deficiencies of the personnel on the DL. I doubt LJ has softened, but he clearly deferred to the experienced DL in high leverage situations throughout the season when some young pups should have got the chance to bite. Perplexed by Tyleik getting only a couple plays today. Disappointed with Haskells performance today, but wouldn’t trade him for anyone after his contributions over his career. Dude got SHOT IN THE FACE and balled out two more seasons.

Some guys that just didn’t develop, and had never shown signs of developing, will be moving on. I don’t want to say its addition by subtraction, but they’ve been in championship situations three years in a row and simply underperformed.

Lack of pressure today was eyebrow raising.

A two loss regular season is far from end of world….especially coming off a season where we went to CFP.

I do think there was more behind the scenes drama than what has been made publicly available (especially with Miller, Banks, and some issues in LB room).

That said, they showed what they were capable of at times and Stroud developed nicely.

We were a front running team this year, meaning we needed to jump out quick and pounce and force teams to play our style. When we couldn’t do that games got ugly. Two times it resulted in losses. Will always be a bit bummed this team didn’t have a chance to play indoors on a fast track against whoever makes the CFP……kind of one of those years like 1997 where I’ll always feel when playing our best, we are prob best team in nation.

It's tough though because I think Haskell was playing really hurt. Otherwise I agree the DL the last 2 years just is lacking that dominant DE. Then again though our scheme needs to adjust for that and sometimes we don't.

This DL still generated a ton of sacks though even though it maybe lacks the game breaker.

I really don't think it's personnel.

I know from an experience standpoint…this was a super inexperienced buckeye team compared to past 30 years. I know the few upperclassmen we did have…many didn’t perform this year. What happened to Banks? Smith and Harrison? Vincent? The linebackers that were suppose to be the next wave after last years crew graduated…where were they? Hell two left mid year. We lost Proctor early (not his fault).

I found it interesting our (2) best DT’s didn’t start today. They made rotation on second series but we were already down 7-0. Curious why Haskell and Antwuan were second unit today….? Not sure if it was strategy or discipline issue…? it struck me as odd though.

For sure and who knows what happens if given 3 weeks to prepare... but all things equal if we couldn't beat a 1 dimensional TTUN we more than likely weren't beating a much better Georgia team.

I really don't think it's personnel.

It is personnel when our D staff is built around a scheme predicated on having generational DE talents.

If the staff isnt recruiting to their scheme, you change the scheme, or find coaches willing to change the scheme.

The last five years of D coaching turnover have just completely fucked us, and has caught up in the past 11 months. We’ve just been churning through one and two year guys for too long now.

My point being, LJ is the last person I’d point a finger at.

True the offensive staff has been pretty consistent with Day, Stud, and Wilson who make a decent combination although Stud gets some criticism he's not terrible.

Defensive staff has been constant turnover besides LJ who is about ready to retire. We need to find our Venebles and pay him to stick around

Oh man.... where to start... Only the second time I've ever seen us lose to them, but this is without a doubt the most hurtful loss I've experienced ever since I started watching the Buckeyes. The way we were completely manhandled on both sides of the ball was shocking, but I have to confess I wasn't very surprised with the softness in the DL, clearly talent is lacking/not playing to expectations in that unit, and that somewhat extends to the rest of the D, outside of a few exceptions. Adding that to the lack of a solid DC and youth in some of the positions, it resulted in the defensive abomination of a game we played today, I never expected that they would just be able to run the ball on us like that, it seemed as though they were playing NCAA in rookie difficulty, and there were no structural efforts along the game to counter how easily they were gaining rushing yards.

One thing that clearly surprised me though, was the offense, especially coach Day's play-calling, with some of the most head scratching calls I've ever seen him make. Alongside that, the amount of penalties showed, imo, that the OL is clearly not functioning well as a whole unit, maybe the fact that it's composed by 4 OT is to blame, but they clearly didn't show up today. A bit sad that this is how Olave goes out against TTUN, and overall I think that the WRs, RBs and QB played well enough today, and were the only bright spot in this dark day.

No doubt that we didn't earn it today, and even though it was bound to happen, this feeling sucks super hard. On the other hand the thing about this rivalry is that in 365 days we'll meet again in Columbus, and hopefully the necessary changes are made (should've been done after the NC last year), which means we get a new DC and possibly other position coaches (LB?, OL?), and we can continue dominating TTUN.

Regarding this year, well, there's nothing much to say, it's clearly a huge failure, especially considering this game had a Big Ten Championship berth on the line, and obvious playoff implications, also, the potential victory in NY6 bowl game doesn't shine so bright after this loss. We'll see next September when we play ND if at least something good came out of it.

As for their arrogance (looking at you Harbaugh), it was to be expected, and should never have been forgotten (especially by all of those who keep saying this isn't a rivalry anymore), since, as of today, we'll all patiently wait, with this pain and feeling, for 365 days, were hopefully in Columbus, the Buckeyes will once again beat the crap out of TTUN.

Go Bucks ! Beat That Team Up North !

I've wondered this too, and after a few games where people said he looked gassed, I assume it's just a conditioning issue most freshman have to work through. If he gets to be an every downer and can maintain his tenacity, it would be a game changer.
