THE GAME, tOSU at tCun, Sat. 11/25, 12pm ET, FOX

Wasn't USC sanctioned to oblivion though ?
That was 30 scholarships through three years. I think that would have started in 2010? The results of the sanctions should have been long gone by now. The coaching changes made by people smarter than us was more of their downfall. They hired the hot young coach with ties to USC in Kiffin. Did they not give him enough time to rebuild the program following the sanctions? I don't know. Ed Orgeorn took over in the interim only to be replaced by a former USC coach in Sark for the permanent head coach the next year. He lasted two years before the bottle got the best of him. Another USC legacy coach in Clay Helton replaced Sark. Clay was mid at best. But he knew of the USC traditions and was approved by people smarter than us. All of this brings us to Lincoln Reilly.

In short, the sanctions are not what brought down the USC program. The sanctions State Penn received because of the Sandusky affair were harsher but the job Bill O'brien and James Franklin did to keep that program fairly relevant.

Again, I appreciate that perspective and as an OOS kid with midwestern roots, I know how much the “game” means to people from Ohio. But trying to separate “real” fans from fake is a slippery slope. No one is going to agree on that criteria. I will say this might be a generational/OOS thing tho. For the younger generations and people not living in the rivarly day in and out, this just isn’t the “grand finale” for us. We grew up beating Michigan consistently for almost two decades (pretty much took it for granted really) and have a bunch of gold pants and conference titles. But we only won the big one twice with over a decade between them. All through the 00s and 10s, we were the toast of the Midwest but never thought of as a true contender as the SEC teams were king and showed it on the field more times than not when we played them. Honestly (and not cuz I was on campus at the time), getting curb stomped by FL and LSU in consecutive yrs at the BCS championship, last years Georgia loss, and the 2019 game with Clemson hurt more than these past two Michigan losses for me.

Of course beating Michigan is important for regional/conference bragging rights (and our psyches) but if you listen to the OOS skill players who come here, they do so to 1) Get developed for the NFL and 2) play for championships. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember any of our OOS stars (especially the recent ones) saying they were coming here to beat Michigan. Once they get on campus/commit that changes, but let’s not act like that’s why they come here. They don’t come here unless there is stable program with a winning tradition. Day has maintained that despite his Michigan woes. I’m just not for canning him because he can’t win one game that decreases in value starting next year. With that same logic, Georgia would have canned Smart before the the 2019 season because he couldn’t beat Alabama or anyone with a pulse for his first 5 seasons even though he had a stellar record otherwise. I think we can all admit that would have been the wrong decision and I bet a lot of Georgia fans are very happy their AD didn’t listen to their calls for his firing.
i'm an OOS kid and didn't grow up in the rivalry, though my family was largely TTUN fans. i went to OSU because it "felt" right to me. when i visited TSUN i couldn't stand the stank and the holier-than-thou silver spoon attitude and arrogance.

and, no... fwiw, winning NCs (two in my lifetime), as nice as it felt, doesn't come anywhere close to the "all is well in the world" high i feel every time we beat those arrogant self-righteous fucks.

Cooper lost 43 games in 13 years…. Days lost what 6 or 7 games over 5 years? Cooper would have been gone much sooner in the current environment. Cooper was let go because he couldn’t beat the TCUN, but he also didn’t have the success outside of the game to merit keeping the job. I’m not saying the next name had to be guaranteed better. I am saying that the next guy has to at least be equal and I believe there are very few candidates that are realistic shots for OSU that would be equals.
Cooper also benefitted from the sloppy dismissal of Earle. Whoever the next coach was, he was going to be given a long leash before being whacked.

I’m sure you will be making excuses for him then too
There’s no excuses next year. He has to beat them but that’s more of a formality with the outlook of their team. Sanctions or not, Michigan’s team will be gutted by the draft and graduation and they don’t recruit at a high level. Even they expect to lose anywhere from 3-6 games next year. If we can’t beat that, believe me, I will not be making excuses for him either. Cuz that’s indicative of a bigger problem at that point. He wouldn’t even be beating people he should be able to….

View attachment 37731So, I put The Button away still waiting for its fortieth win - could jump to seeking 43 - before the next season starts. The flag remains outside just to show the neighbors that I'm not a fair weather fan.

The reason why it's The Game, and not just some shit show like Okie - Okie State, ND - USC, U Wash - Wazoo, Texass - Aggie, is because the two teams are consistently among the best in the nation and the series is balanced - especially if you take away the 19th century. For that reason the whole nation focuses on The Game, not just the local yahoos.

I'm disappointed, yes. Heartbroken? No, I experienced that during my freshman year, March 1962, and it lasted for more than a year. Disaster? No, I saw that in some tiny plot of ground called Fire Support Base Julie. It just hurts. Like my big toe on my left foot hurt when I stubbed it on the kitchen counter base.

So what's my point. It was one hell of a battle with the outcome in doubt until just 20 seconds were left on the clock. Both teams will still be great again for the same reasons: money, facilities, fanbases, alums, traditions. I'm putting my thoughts into next year, in the 'shoe. My button goes back into storage. The TBDBITL cd comes out of the car player. Thanks to the 2023 Bucks for a great year. I'll be back. The Bucks will be back. O - H!

The anti-Day crowd has made so many bad takes in this thread that you are starting to turn me into one of his staunchest supporters. I am only partially joking.

This following take is not bad, it is simply incorrect:

Actually, through their first five years, Ryan Day is exactly Kirby Smart. Ask our resident Georgia fans what they thought of Smart when he kept losing big games to his rivals during his first five seasons. Then Smart wins it all in years six and seven and is odds on favorite to threepeat in year eight. Now ask Georgia fans how high they want to build his statue.

Kirby Smart is an aberration. Most coaches who win an NC do so within their first four seasons at that school. The complete list is here: LINK. Dabo Swinney is another aberration, as he won his first NC at Clemson in year eight and his second in year ten. I have no reason to think or even believe that Ryan Day will buck the trend like Smart and Swinney, but at this point I have to hope that he does so. My hope will run out in three years – if Day hasn't won it all by the 2026 season, then I will firmly join the anti-Day camp.

I've given my thoughts on Ryan Day earlier in this thread: LINK. Ryan Day is not a risk taker – he doesn't go for the throat early (Clemson 2019; scUM 2023) or sweep the leg late (Georgia 2022), and this has led to three career-defining losses. Sometimes risk aversion is the byproduct of intelligence, sometimes of cowardice. You decide.

Now I want to give a different perspective on Ryan Day. I'm not Ryan Day's boss, but if I were I would consider the following to be his job duties, in order: (1) prepare players for the NFL; (2) generate money for Ohio State and its media partners; and (3) win football games.

The purpose of a college is to prepare its students for their chosen careers. Ryan Day and his staff are essentially professors of football, so their primary job is to prepare their players for the NFL. Ryan Day and his staff do a great job of preparing players for the NFL, and that is one of the main reasons why talented high school football prospects want to attend Ohio State (just like talented high school computer programer prospects want to attend Stanford).

Of course, college football is a business and player development requires money – for assistant coaches, for a recruiting staff, for training facilities, and these days for players themselves. Ryan Day generates a lot of money for Ohio State, and thus Ohio State has a lot of money to invest in its football program – it's a successful business model.

So if Ryan Day succeeds in his first two job duties (develop players; generate money), then he will naturally succeed in his third (win games). Day has won games at an incredible rate and he will continue to do so. The question remains: Will Day ever the big game and transform himself from a good steward into a renowned king?

A few more thoughts on The Game itself....

After the Minnesota game, I had this to say about Kyle McCord:

After The Game, I feel even more strongly that McCord = Boeckman and that Ohio State will have a new starting quarterback in 2024. McCord showed no real improvement throughout the season and he does not possess the athleticism to overcome his mental mistakes.

After the Michigan State game, I had this to say about Xavier Johnson:

Johnson had another nice game yesterday, with 3 plays from scrimmage for 22 yards and 2 kick returns for 42 yards. It's really cool to see the X-Man having some success, but where have all the five star recruits gone? Marvin Harrison Jr is the best player in college football and Emeka Egbuka gets somewhat of a pass this year due to injury, but in his fourth season Julian Fleming has still not progressed beyond mediocrity (26 receptions, 270 yards, 0 TDs this season; 80 receptions, 990 yards, 7 TDs for his career). Sure, Brandon Inniss and Carnell Tate look like future stars, but former top prospects Jayden Ballard, Kiyon Grayes, Kojo Antwi, Noah Rogers, and Bryson Rodgers have a combined zero receptions on the season. Tight end Gee Scott Jr has a grand total of 19 receptions for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns through four seasons.

One final thought. After the Notre Dame game, I wrote this:

I understand that football games are win/lose events and that there are no bad wins or good losses. I also understand that football is a game of inches and that one or two plays can swing the outcome of a game. In the Notre Dame game, everything went right on the final drive and Ohio State pulled out a miraculous victory; in the scUM game, the potential game-winning drive ended with an interception. Now reverse the situations – the Notre Dame ends with the pick, the scUM game with the last-second touchdown. Do your opinions of Ryan Day and Kyle McCord change? Should they, or are they still the same guys?
Thank you. This is basically my whole argument

What the fuck do you want people to say? "He's a dickless piece of shit who should be fired and coach peewee football. He's a loser will never win and even if he does it will be in spite of his gutless, pathetic coaching." Is that good?

I don't get the obsession with Whittingham. He's had some good wins and has gotten his ass beaten red by any good team they've played.

Fickell is a solid coach who will inevitably drop 2-3 games , DeBoer is basically Ryan Day in a conference that doesn't play defense, Lanning is the new name that has won...jack shit so far.

All these names have potential, and none of them give me any reason they'd suddenly beat up top 5 Michigan teams on the road. None. Complain about Day because there's reasons to, but acting like any of these hot names will come in, win 10+ games and beat Michigan is just a different version [snipped oral analogy that I neither get, nor care about].
This inspired me to research who the f @sg86 was referring to. No offense, but to me the list is silly and smacks of unnecessary desperation.
Lanning (Oregon) - riding a 24-y.o. QB, still hasn't been to the playoffs.
DeBoer (Washington) - riding a 24-y.o. QB, still hasn't been to the playoffs, lucky to beat Arizona.
Elko (Duke) - 7-5 this year... in the ACC
Klieman (KSU) - 8-4
Leipold (Kansas) - 7-4
Fickell (see above)
Whittingham (He just turned 64 years old, lol!)
(I knew the whereabouts of the last two.)

OSU tends to avoid throwing caution to the wind on wings and prayers to get a complete outsider to be HC. Except for when they hired Cooper (oops). But Coop actually won a Rose Bowl.

Day will lead the Bucks to an undefeated regular season next year, it's all but guaranteed with his record against opponents the likes of which are on the schedule next year. Can we guarantee the same with any of those other coaches? And as far as I am concerned he is essentially either 1-1 or 3-1 (pending) versus Mecheatagain.

I respect that, but everyone’s perspective is different. Don’t get me wrong. Im not happy about yesterday and I definitely feel uneasy today (kind of mad this game still affects me that much lol) and the past 3 years are going to live rent free in my head until we get another win. But honestly the missed FG on New Year’s Eve last year and that TD run by Trevor Lawrence in 2019 still haunt my dreams and I’ll never get over those lol. Especially that FG.

At Oregon (Day already dropped a game to a worse Oregon team than they are bringing back next season) and at Penn State aren't guarantees. We lose a lot of guys. We could easily be 10-2 before Michigan

lol... blake midget fucking corum with the toupee hairdo, coached by bike hart, running all over us, trucking and juking a stud like sunny styles, making him look like trent fucking morgan flopping like a flying fish, arms flailing as he does a face plant into the grass... that is the image that will haunt me.

i'm not mad that losing this game bothers me so much. i'm mad that we lost this game.

We have lost lots of guys before lots of PSU games and continue to beat them. And the Oregon loss was on Coombs, whom he demoted later in the season.

Edit: You all are judging Day by his record against certain types of teams. He is undefeated against PSU.

After yesterday, I have a good feeling some of the guys who were on the cusp of leaving will stay. Marvin is gone, but idk about Ebuka anymore after the year he had due to injuries. Also I don’t think it’s forgone conclusion that Henderson is gone either. He might pull a corum. Only people I see on defense leaving for sure are JTT, Proctor, Ransom, Tommy, Steele, and Burke. And honestly we probably need new blood at LB now anyways. I love Tommy and Steele but they haven’t showed up in big games.
