OSU notebook: Addition of tailback empowers Michigan

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Bashing Michigan's spread option offense might be the rage these days because of the team's unprecedented eight losses. But Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins said the Wolverines aren't without punch headed into Saturday's game.
"From what I've seen, they've done enough (offensively) to keep them in games," Jenkins said. "They might not have been as consistent or explosive as they want to be, but they have done enough to keep them in games and keep it close."
The Wolverines have used two quarterbacks, Steven Threet and Nick Sheridan, most of the season, though Threet is questionable because of a shoulder injury.

Events of 1913 laid foundation for bitter rivalry

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

George Little

The seeds of discontent were sown well before the Snow Bowl, Bo Schembechler, David Boston and Jim Harbaugh -- to name just a few -- turned The Game into a border war.
The seed was planted in 1897, the first time Ohio State played Michigan, but the rivalry did not sprout until 1913, when three events combined to foreshadow the generations of revulsion to come.
The first event was lesser known than the other two, but nonetheless brought the rivalry to a fuller boil 11 years later, in 1924.
After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan in 1912, George Little followed his OWU coach, Lynn W. St. John, to Ohio State, where in 1913 he became a graduate assistant under first-year coach John W. Wilce.

Up north: QB struggles mirror team's

Friday, November 21, 2008 3:02 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

What could have been for Rich Rodriguez will stare him in the face Saturday.
Rodriguez has not talked to Terrelle Pryor since the freshman quarterback shunned Michigan for Ohio State in the 2008 recruiting season's highest-profile competition.
While Pryor has already established himself as a star, Michigan's weakness at quarterback has been perhaps the most glaring deficiency on a team full of them.

Please make the score of the game this weekend make the game played between OSU and MSU in East Lansing look like it was a friendly running clock scrimmage*.

I'm saying this needs to be a CAL vs Washington State or a USC vs Washington type annihilation.

No excuses, they are HORRID, if we can beat them overcoming magical/mythical/all powerful pylons and a gimpy Ringer, the rout had better be on.

* No, it wasn't, I know where you are going with this.

Go get em, I want this to make Saw look like Blue's Clues.

Also, thank you Pryor for going to OSU, now my team likely won't have to ever face him again... And more importantly it set back DickRod at least 2 season's since he'll be breaking in someone far less talented and experienced than a 2nd year T. Pryor next season. Thanks, to infinity and beyond.

Wow. You could have a pretty strong interest in rooting against us this weekend. I guess hatred of the weasels trumps all for you guys too.

Wilce didn't think much about Michigan during his first five seasons, because UM was not on the Buckeyes' schedule. Michigan had left the league in 1907, and in 1913 conference officials ordered its other teams not to schedule the Wolverines, who eventually returned to the Big Ten in 1917.

I actually didn't know that. One more reason to hate those turncoat bastards!

I'm also inteliigent and not homerish enough (and enough of a :osu: fan) that I know the .000000000000000000001% chance "THEY" might win coupled with the 15% chance or so I give MSU over PSU... it ain't worth it, and it ain't going to happen.

Plus The Outback at absolute worst and a potential 11 win season (since the SEC #5 isn't scary AT ALL) ain't too shabby if we do knock of PSU and :osu: TCOB's on "TheM"

Additionally we get the recruits that run down OSU's leg, if M is weakened the guys that may go to one or the other go to OSU and the other guys 'drop down a notch'. MSU can win with the 15-25 HS players in Ohio and win "big"

I still remember Marcus Ray taunting the tOSU crowd after they upset us 13-9 in 1996......

Dispatch

When former Michigan and Eastmoor star Marcus Ray was contacted by Dispatch reporter Bob Baptist to be a guest predictor in Saturday's BuckeyeXtra Gameday+ section, he made it clear he had heard what former Ohio State players Chris Spielman and Kirk Herbstreit had said about Michigan on their WBNS-AM radio program.

Ray's text message: "Charles (Woodson) and I will respond soon :) ... OSU better win."
Ray picked Michigan to win -- no surprise there -- but he seemed surprised by some of the things Spielman and Herbstreit had said on "The Big Show." Their comments had made their way to The Detroit News' Web site. A sampler:

Nothing to spoil spoils rivalry for Buckeyes

By Jon Spencer ? Telegraph-Forum staff ? November 21, 2008

COLUMBUS -- A.J. Trapasso gets it.
While his Ohio State teammates recite the usual spiel about how records don't matter in the rivalry with Michigan, the Buckeyes' senior punter begs to differ.
Wins and losses do matter, making Michigan's 3-8 record a blight on a storied series that turns 105 with today's noon kickoff in Ohio Stadium.
"I think any true Buckeye fan would tell you that when we're not playing Michigan, we're rooting for them," Trapasso said. "A lot of people might turn their head funny hearing that, but you want it to mean more than just Michigan playing their last game of the season.
"It makes it that much better when there's something on the line like BCS (bowl) bids, Big Ten titles ... that's what you really want at the end of the season."

Ohio State expected to win big against Michigan on Saturday

November 21, 2008

SATURDAY at high noon No. 10 Ohio State (9-2) will play host to Michigan (3-8) in Ohio Stadium. In 2007, Ohio State won 14-3 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Buckeyes have won four straight and six out of the past seven games in the series.
The Maize and Blue - or is it black and blue - come into The Game as a 20.5-point underdog. The Wolverines are heavy underdogs because of injuries and the poor play they have displayed this season.
Quarterback Steven Threet and running back Sam McGuffie are questionable for the game. Running back Brandon Minor is expected to play, but he is not at full strength.

Koger gets first taste of UM-OSU rivalry
Toledoan suits up for Wolverines

ANN ARBOR - Like most of the current Wolverines and Buckeyes who grew up in Michigan or Ohio, Kevin Koger always watched Ohio State-Michigan, a series that he'll become a part of for the first time tomorrow.

"You'd sit down on Saturday afternoon and watch this game and think about what it would be like to play in it," said Koger, a Whitmer graduate and freshman tight end at Michigan. "I know it's going to be a lot different than what you see on TV."
