Game Thread THE GAME: Ohio State 42, Michigan 7 (Nov. 22)

yippee

just read through the last 60 pages or so. very cool. I watched the game here in tsun with two michigan die hard fans. It was wayyy enjoyable. I'm telling you, average scum fan is beaten down. Our win streak could go on for another two or three years if the fans attitude infects the players.

I think if some school below the Mason Dixon line goes after dick rod in 2010 he will jump ship. Like John Cooper, he just will never be a fit for this conference or for THE GAME.

Maybe one of the best things to come out of this game will be a touch of humility for TP. His panties were in a knot for the first couple series. He was tighter than a drum. But he definitely relaxed later and had an overall positive Michigan game. So I think he learned very well from the State Penn game, his only loss as a starter, and then he had a perfect first scum game... not statistically perfect but he got to experience the intensity of the game.

Very very cool game, can't wait to go to work on Monday (in Ann Arbwhore).

Peace out!

Good game, we got [censored]ed up. Surprised we were able to move the ball a little (uses a microscope magnified x1000 to show how much we moved it) and I thought it was pretty amusing that an offense with 0 returning starters (Schilling hurt) and a walk on at QB was able to get more yards against OSU then an offense with 5 NFL players (Henne, Hart, Long, Manningham, and Arrington)

Pretty simple how to beat us and Tressel exploited it easily. All you do is neutralize the D-line and make the LBs + Safeties make play and we don't have any players who can do that. I thought the D overall played well though, I think OSU had like 10 plays for 300 yards and then 50 plays for like 100, but that's the same as every year OSU always gets the big play. Always the result of [censored]ty safety play and it was no different this year.

Hats off to OSU, played a good game, hope Beanie isn't hurt too long and I'll look forward to next year's matchup!

Edit: I will add, I was disappointed we didn't get to see Ohio State's backup cheerleaders put into the game in the 4th. I figured once they got in we'd atleast have an even matchup on the field but I guess Tressel wasn't interested in that.

Completely off-topic, but any truth to the rumors that McGuffie was crying on the Wolverine sideline after getting smacked on the kickoff (because my seats were on the other side)?

If true, any pictures?

I honestly thought they killed McGuffie on that return.

I was actually amazed he got up as soon as he did - thought he'd be down for a couple of minutes, if at all.

If he didn't get any ribs broken, it's a miracle.

42-7? 42-7! For someone who had his Buckeye memories formed by the Cooper years, this is the biggest ass whooping in The Game ever. All the more impressive considering I would give our team about a C+ grade. Michigan sucks that bad. They (UM) actually played a good game for a quarter, but after the Beanie TD, it was all but over. Speaking of Beanie, 3 straight UM games with a 50+ yd TD run, that has to be a record. I've never seen a RB on any level who has taken so many up the gut runs to the house. Wolverine Killer Extraordinaire. Goddamn, I love that kid.

Watching The Game for the third time (I passed out for a bit during the second viewing; got my drink on today). Huge defensive stand after the INT. The D played their asses off today, except for the nap they took on UM's lone scoring drive. The seniors stepped up; JL 12 tackles ( my methomps challenge prediction!), MF fumble recovery, MJ a few breakups, NA another great game! Kurt Coleman had some big ass hits. There were big hits all around for the D. Were it not for the big run by Minor, we would have had a shutout. UM's O flat out sucks. I can't recall a college team that has fielded such an inept unit. Sheridan looks like Rob Shoenhoft's evil twin. Most of his passes hit the dirt, although, he did a good job of finding the wide open WRs long, later in The Game. WTF was up with DickRod's play calling? Multiple times he called a WR screen in a situation that called for a long gain (most notably with 30 sec left in the first half at midfield). What a fucking dumbass! Take a delay of game to punt with 14 sec left in the half? Does this retard understand the game of football?

Not quite the breakout game I wanted to see from Pryor today, although, that pass to Hartline was fucking beautiful. Certainly not a bad game, but too many sacks. On all of those plays, he could have taken off for positive yds. I like the fact that he's looking to pass first (a la T. Smith 06), but he should realize that his feet can be the most dangerous weapon on the field, especially on broken plays. It's all good though, he will tear Michigan apart for at least two more years.

BEAN-IE! BEAN-IE! BEAN-IE! BEAN-IE! I said it before, I'll say it again; I fucking love that kid. Apart from his two long runs, Beanie's ability to move the chains set up OSU's offensive success in The Game. UM's D-line was on the field so long, they couldn't keep up in the 2nd half. The rest of their D is crap, and after the line got tired, it was all Buckeyes. A true Buckeye legend.

Awesome to see Boeckman get in the game and play well. Doubly awesome to hear the great reception he got from the crowd after the TD pass. TB is a class act, and he has handled himself beautifully during a tough season. His TD pass was the highlight of The Game for me.

So many great efforts on the field today. The seniors definitely went out on a high note. Game balls to JL, MF, MJ, TB, NA, and MW. Also great game for Coleman, Chekwa, Moeller, Williams, Hartline, Boom, Larimore, and Williams. The future is bright for the Buckeyes, especially in the context of The Game. That being said, we should have won this game by Infinity-Zero, Michigan is that bad. Which brings me to:

FUCK MICHIGAN!!! That was one of the worst piss poor showings by any Big Ten team ever. They got nothing. How ridiculous is it that UM has no QB that has any business playing at the D1 level? The only thing that overshadows the lack of talent on the field is the lack of competence shown by the coaching staff. DickRod has no business coaching in the Big Ten. He should jump at his first chance to grab an ACC job, where he can go 8-6 and still be considered the savior of some sorry ass program. Unless he can luck out with a Pat White level recruit, that's the best he can hope for. I will revel in watching OSU stomp the shit out of UM for the next 2-3 years, and beyond, but, at some point, UM needs to build itself back to a threat to win the Big Ten title, and a national power. I don't see DickRod getting that done. Fuck them. Fuck DickRod. Fuck Barwis. They are fucking clowns, and cannot pull in the types of players that will be able to compete in the Big Ten. That bush league offensive scheme will not work in the big boy conference. Fuck him, and fuck the retards who fucked up the process to find a coach who had a chance to lead that storied program who should be a Big Ten contender every year, and instead hired a incompetent carpetbagger who will be lucky to beat Indiana and Northwestern on a regular basis. Fuck all of them until they can field a team that is worthy of playing in the Big Ten.

On a side note, I watched The Game with only one friend (the rest of the crew was either at the 'Shoe, or out of town), at a neighborhood bar which was mostly empty. At one point he said, "This is my favorite day of the year, every year. Christmas and whatnot are cool, but they don't compare to this.". I have to agree with him. For one thing, I've never done a gravity bong on Christmas. But, other than that, a win over UM puts me in a good mood for an entire year. A little less when we lose the bowl game, but that doesn't happen too often. We need to win our bowl game this year, no matter where it is. A bowl win, no matter how big or small, will give every Buckeye fan a reason to be in a good mood for 11 months.

Another side note, on Beanie's big run at the start of the second half, he stepped out of bounds when he only had Morgan :slappy: Trent to beat. WTF!?!?!?! If there is anyone who deserves a brutal stiff-arming, it's Morgan :slappy: Trent. Oh well, it was great to see Boom rip off a Beanie-esque TD run on the next play. The torch has been passed.

Go Buckeyes!!!

Bob Hunter commentary: Expect this rivalry to remain lopsided for a while

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

College football's greatest rivalry could use some work. As descriptions of Ohio State-Michigan go, "The Big One" suddenly seems two sizes two large, like an XXXXL sweatshirt draped over a dieter who has lost 75 pounds. "The Game" seems more like "a game," like OSU-Troy or Michigan State-Florida Atlantic or Michigan-Appalachian ... well, you get the idea.
Put it this way: Ohio State-Michigan has suddenly begun masquerading as an OSU-Toledo game, a switch not without a touch of irony considering the Wolverines lost to Toledo this season.
But the rivalry is tottering not simply because Michigan has had an embarrassment or two, or because of an unprecedented five consecutive OSU wins in the series, or because Michigan has just finished the season 3-9, or even because the Buckeyes hammered their hapless rivals 42-7 yesterday in Ohio Stadium.

The Bottom Line

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

By day's end, the Rose Bowl trip was denied, and a BCS bid was a big, fat question mark. But all that mattered to the Buckeyes was that they needed a full hand to count consecutive wins over their rival. Leaves are awarded on a zero-to-five basis.

Offense (three leaves)
For once, the Kid looked like a raw rookie -- shaky in the pocket, and a flat-awful pick. But it lasted only for a while. Once Beanie and Boom hit the second level, and Pryor began hitting his marks, it was lights out. OSU finished with six plays of 35 yards or more. Salute. And a classy finale, Boecks.
Defense (four leaves)
It might have looked like they were playing football, but Marcus Freeman, Little Animal and the predators mostly seemed intent on opening a tattoo parlor for Wolverines. This will only hurt, well, a lot. Crunch this: OSU forced UM into nine three-and-outs, five to start the game and four to end it.

Scarlet & Gray Matter
Rob Oller's observations on today's game

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The game at hand

Short-attention-span synopsis: After two quarters, The Game becomes The Game-Set-Match. Beanie goes ... Boom. Michigan/Missedagain. Tress owns seven vests and as many Wolverine pelts. Boeckman!
Pregame buzz: The question wasn't "if" but "how many?" Would the Buckeyes win by 10? 20? 30? The worrywarts were swallowing their tongues the first half, but Michigan's true colors, er, make that true color -- blue -- came through in the end.
The $62 question: Split the difference. The day was worth $31, the price of a second-half butt-kickin'.
One-liner: West Virginia enjoys its biggest win of the season.

This is The Game, the biggest rivalry in all sports. If RRod knows football, he should know the magnitude of this game. Why the fuck is he downplaying it like it's "just another game"? Piece of shit man. The comment that pissed me off the most was when he said that a win wouldn't salvage the season. Mother fucker, look, you play at these schools to beat each other, then get to a Rose Bowl. So, tradition says, yes this would salvage your season.

I am glad to we stomped the shit out of scUM. It was nice to see Rod's face everytime they showed him. His comments about we missed plays.....bullshit! You were completely dominated after the first quarter. That team has NO talent. I don't see them having any talent in the near future. scUM is a horrible team and it's a shame. This should be a great game every year, but then again, I wouldn't mind too much if we blow them out every game until Rod gets canned.

1-2 punch KO's Michigan
OSU's tailback tandem of Wells, Herron too much for Wolverines to handle
Saturday, November 22, 2008 8:24 PM
By Tim May

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

In an attempt to establish its running game against Michigan yesterday, Ohio State first threw a Beanie at the Wolverines. Then the Buckeyes lowered the Boom.
Of course, the Wolverines should be used to Chris "Beanie" Wells and his act by now. After a 222-yard effort last season, Wells gained 134 yards on 15 carries before leaving in the third quarter because of a hamstring injury. The junior scored the Buckeyes' first touchdown on a 59-yard burst in the first quarter, and had a 42-yard run from the OSU 9-yard line early in the third quarter.
After that run, Wells gave way to Daniel "Boom" Herron, who went 49 yards on the next play for a touchdown that gave OSU a 21-7 lead on the way to its 42-7 win. Herron, who added a 2-yard TD early in the fourth quarter, wound up with 80 yards on eight carries.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

THE PLAY
A 42-yard run by Chris "Beanie" Wells on Ohio State's first offensive play of the second half from the Buckeyes' 9-yard line. When Dan Herron went 49 for a touchdown on the next play, The Game was close no more.
THE STAR
Wells. He left midway through the third quarter because of a hamstring pull but left his mark for the third straight time against Michigan, with 134 yards, including 59 on a first-quarter TD.
THE STAT
The Buckeyes gained 284 of their 416 total yards on just six plays, three going for touchdowns. That doesn't include Ray Small's 80-yard punt return that set up another score.
