Game Thread THE GAME: Ohio State 14, TSUN 3 (final)

Which brings me to my point. Does the hype over (indeed labeling it) "The Game" bring too much honor to Michigan by the recognition of the importance of the game? That whole honoring thing where you judge me by the greatness of my enemy?? Since the skunk bears are the scum that they are, do such actions (for minor example, the poli-board shut down) bring too much attention to them, thereby giving them honor that they do not deserve in a left handed manner??
No. We embrace UM's greatness as a pivotal part in The Game or The Rivalry. Sinister hatred causes buckeye fans to snicker at Appy St, but the ultimate dream is to face a great, undefeated UM team to add to the glory of a win. That's what made 06 so special, bowl season not withstanding. From speaking with UM fans, many snickered at the ILL upset then sighed at the realization of what they had lost for this weekend.

As for what you described, UM has that attitude towards MSU. Ohio State is quite wary of PSU (especially @), but there is not much respect.

NFL Vets always chime in about how "The Game" is the cleanest they've ever played in at any level. The hatred & ferocity is enormous, but so is the respect.

To be the greatest, you must beat greatness. To be THE rivalry, you must have greatness on both sides. I don't think there's any concern about giving them too much honor. I don't think it's even left handed.

Great post, I love seeing UM lose but there is nothing better than last year and ruining their undefeated season.

To be honest, that is exactly what I thought, and very much mirrors my feelings about the WLOCP, although our is sometimes only for bragging rights, and not the conference championship, as we are both in the east division and never will play each other in Atlanta. (y'all did enjoy our win over the mutts in 2002 as I recall).

But, as it is the week of The Game, I wanted to hear it from y'all, nor only for confirmation of what I thought, but as an outlet for y'all to express your feelings about the importance of this week. Without that respect, the victories would not be as deliciously sweet nor the defeats as punishingly bitter.

Enjoy.

I'm enjoying the experience of "The Game", and it is interesting to note the differences with our own rivals. Now, I am not saying anything pro or con about the different experiences, just comparing.

To old Gators like me, there is nothing better than to hate the worthless butt sniffing leg humping poodles from Georgia. Their long run of success in the 70s and 80s still remains some of my bitterest memories. There is no such thing as "class" when the WLOCP is on: you ruts, and you call a time out with fifteen seconds left to see if you can throw a Hail Mary for a meaningless padded score, and call an on-side kick, recover and yet another Hail Mary. More importantly, you expect the same, and it is considered whining to complain about it. You should take a knee on other opponents when you are ahead, but not those ass-holes. Too many memories of smelling the breath of drunk mutts barking in my face - right before the fight breaks out!

Now our jealous little brothers at FSU are not our main rival. It annoys them that we deny that we are their rival, as we do not value them that much to be our main rival. True, it is an in-state heated deal, but they will always be the secretarial college to us.

Here I await the instruction of my BP friends to enlighten me.:scum3:
I am obviously no Buckeye fan, but I think the attitudes regarding the rivalry are interchangeable. Clearly, I have no love in my heart for the scarlet and gray. But I respect them more than almost any other college football team in the land. This is a unique rivalry. It's the only one they do specials on HBO for. Other than Army-Navy, it's the only one that generally has the nation's undivided attention. Best rivalry in the country in ANY sport. It's a special thing. To be part of that adds luster and prestige to the Michigan (and Ohio State) program, so without Ohio State (and Michigan), Michigan (and Ohio State) isn't quite so special.

I came across an old SI dated 11/29/54 and thought I'd share the scans of their write up of The Game. '54 was Woodys first NC for those who didn't know.

Hope you enjoy.

That was an extremely well written article. Non-sports lines that stand out for me? "Scent of roses for yuh, Woody boy!" and "A lady with him chanted in a tired voice 'We're from O-HI-O."
