The Game 1974: #4 Ohio State (9-1-0) vs #3 Michigan (10-0-0)

After an Ohio State three-and-out on their opening series, *ichigan scored a quick touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. On Ohio State's next series, quarterback Cornelius Greene fumbled and *ichigan was able to turn that into a field goal. With 4:57 left in the first quarter, *ichigan led 10-0 and the Game looked like it might turn into a rout.

Ohio State scored field goals on each of their next three possessions and the defense stiffened, and at halftime *ichigan led 10-9.

The Buckeyes took a 12-10 lead after another field goal on their first possession of the second half, and the score would remain the same with 1:59 left in the Game. After Cornelius Greene took a sack on third down deep in Buckeye territory, All American punter Tom Skladany shanked a 31-yard punt and *ichigan took over near midfield. The Wolverines quickly gained 37 yards to set up a 33-yard game-winning field goal attempt with just 18 seconds left. *ichigan place kicker Mike Lantry pushed the ball wide left, his third miss of the afternoon, and the Buckeyes held on for the victory and the Rose Bowl invitation.

All of Ohio State's points came from place kicker Tom Klaban, a most unlikely hero. Klaban was four-for-four on field goal attempts; three of the field goals were 43 yards or longer, including a career-long from 47 yards. Klaban made only eleven other field goals during his Ohio State career, and finished with a career success rate of just .625 (15 of 24). But on November 23, 1974, he was money.

The Game was dominated by defense (or low powered offense): Ohio State had 253 total yards on 63 plays (4.02 avg) and 14 first downs, while Michigan had 291 total yards on 68 plays (4.28 avg) and 18 first downs. Ohio State quarterback Cornelius Greene completed just 3 of 6 passes for 58 yards, while *ichigan quarterback Dennis Franklin completed 5 of 14 passes for 96 yards, a touchdown, and 2 interceptions. Archie Griffin rushed 25 times for 111 yards and *ichigan's Gordon Bell rushed 25 times for 108 yards.

If I remember correctly, Klaban was a walk-on who received a full ride immediately after The Game. At least that was the story at that time.
